The best thing you can do morally, is buy 1 years subscription, and then pirate it. You're paying what it's worth without any of that subscription shit.

Here in Brazil we don't even consider paying for software as an option. Most of us don't even know the option exists in the first place. Browsing torrent sites is second nature for us. Any third world country where money is short has the same pattern. You only spend money on booze and food.

You just won't be able to access any further updates to the software and won't receive any (official) tech support until you pay for another year of support. TL;DR - You get permanent access to current and past versions and you also get one year of updates and support on top of that.

Which is a fine idea imo on paper, but the problem is when the option for a permanent license is taken away.

This means almost everything covered by copyright trademark etc is nonsense. Some dangerous pictures/extreme weapon plans/etc could still be made illegal without contradicting this.

But again I agree with you, there's a video from a libertarian here on youtube talking about why intellectual property is bullshit. One of his arguments boils down to if I write a poem and tells it to you, and you decide to write it down with your pen and paper from memory then the only way I can claim ownership of that is by claiming ownership of your memory, eg. a part of you. This is immoral thus copyright is immoral. Definitely the case with adobe. I still use CS6 because it was a one time payment and does most of what I need from it. I'd happily upgrade to a newer version if they let me buy it but they won't. There's some nice quality of life changes in the newer version (along with performance improvements) that I'd love. But paying a monthly fee is not worth it. They know this too. Their big customers are forced to pay for their things and as such they can do this consumer unfriendly model and get away with it.

Here's what grinds my gears: subscription software and region locks. If I can pay a one time fee for something in my region I would be more than happy to pay a pretty penny for software I enjoy. But "renting" software pisses me off so I will find any alternative necessary (usually FOSS or other competitor software). And with region locks it's either visit the bae or never experience it at all, and life it too short to miss out on anything.

not steam, a publisher. cant remember which one but they basically tried to force the studio to give their self developed tools and assests, to another studio working with the publisher; then when stuido refused, publisher froze their ip, witheld payments with bs excuses to try and strong arm them for like 8 months. so the studio head said "pirate our game, as we dont see a penny from the sales anyway". i think the publisher eventually had to pay like 2m dollars just for the breach of contract.

Yeah… but also risky to use. As for Services like GOG or Steam, they can ban your account for using a VPN. And i would not wanna risk all my libraries worth of games. That's why i'd rather use a cracked pirated copy instead. Staying legal while wanting to consume is not easy when corporate idiocy is making it hard to stay on the good side.....

Just because the current system is built around greed and profits doesn't make it a good system. Look around you everything from quality of products to the state of infrastructure is crumbling. only issue I have with OSS is that it's usually hella janky. I get it, it's free, but it sucks that there's not more resources invested in UX when it's open source stuff, it would really help get it to mainstream if the software wasn't overwhelmingly confusing (i.e. GIMP, not horrible but it's not exactly friendly to beginners imo). Notable example of this: Blender 3.X which fucking slaps

There have been studies done where piracy, on a wide scale, has no effect on company sales in the slightest. This is looking at the music industry mostly but this applies to other industries as well since music has essentially become free. Don't feel bad about piracy.

The idea of piracy = sale loses is dumb. Most times when someone pirates software is because they can't or just don't want to pay for it. Lowering the price of software and making it open source would reduce piracy significantly. Arrrg.

Back when I use to pirate games quite a bit it was usually because I couldn't afford it at launch. Got to play the game early on and for longer while still buying the game when I had the money available (or when it went on sale). If piracy wasn't an option, I probably would never have bought the games I did since I'd forget about them or lose interest by the time I could actually get them. Piracy probably creates more sales than it removes.

And who cares about if it would be sales losses. It's like asking for money for using certain mathematical formulas or other scientific knowledge. It's dumb as phuck from the start. If something can be copied without any cost whatsoever, then you shouldn't cry if that gets copied. Open source and selling licenses that gets you extra features, support, name on the credits (if you pay enough, otherwise name on the website somewhere), etc. would be the answer. And then having different licenses based on if that software is used for commercial purposes or not. That is important in many software, CAD software comes to mind. You need it to be popular, but still majority of the revenue comes from companies that make money on that software, so you need to take much larger amount from them and offer better support for them. IP protection has phucked the west so badly. But those few giants that have monopoly or essential monopoly, are banking on it while the whole area get suffocated and China etc. reap all the benefits. Though we also need laws to prevent giants that allow companies like Google to become a reality. Buying up hundreds of companies shouldn't be allowed. Unless you are a car company and buy companies whose parts you were using anyway.

i've pirated a lot of games in my younger years. But once i made the money i bought them, if only because i wanted to play the most recent version lol.

I believe that piracy is morally correct in certain cases. I think piracy is OK if it is a large corporate entity (Adobe, Microsoft) but if it’s a smaller team, that’s where the problems start. Same with games. Big companies aren’t going to suffer from piracy, but smaller indie titles and teams may not have a future if piracy is too rampant.

@A A music production software is also a niche where FOSS just falls flat. I know there have been attempts and some FOSS plugins are pretty good, but doesn't general selection if FOSS software just don't live up to the wide range of proprietary tools. Given how the workflow in modern DAWs typically incorporates use of variety of 3rd party plugins, all of which are solid pieces of software (and not only, as the development might involve also elements of audio production and art) on their own, where quality is often a matter of taste, I think chances of developing a somewhat competitive FOSS alternative to proprietary audio production software are lesser than for advanced CADs like Solidworks. Special effects video software, like After Effects also seem to have no solid FOSS alternatives and I think they also get quite modular in a similar way as audio production software, but I haven't used them nearly as much, so i don't know.

There's a lot of content that is unavailable(obscure artists/they aren't selling discs anymore), and in those cases it's either paying for a collector's item, or pirating it. In both cases the artist has no income from it.

Finally someone who gives a good explanation! I've seen so many content creators get this the wrong way and make it look like the ultimate crime. It's not, honestly it's the only way for some of us to play video games. I pay for some games but I always pirate large game companies EA, Activision-Blizzard, Ubisoft, especially Ubisoft and Bethesda, oOoOO Bethesda I still remember horse armor, I still remember how you made DLCs a thing! Hell the only reason I bought the OG Skyrim, no DLCs was to play Enderal since it only needs the Skyrim game to be present in your library not even installed. Also I've seen during my time on the open seas small companies putting their games on the torrent sites, not even joking, and asking people if they enjoy the game to buy it. Unfortunately it wasn't my type of game but they got some customers for that I'm sure of it.

This was pretty informative and it was definitely eye opening to say the least. To see both perspectives of where consumer and provider stand as a whole, in an unbiased perspective is pretty good content. Especially if delivered in a more simple and less complex manner than most, and I could say I definitely enjoyed watching this while eating some snacks because again. Very informative, unbiased and well delivered and I'm guessing this is the content I'll be watching daily. 10/10 video.

What tools are there not replacements for? I'm fairly new at Linux.

I've just been reading the Wikipedia page for Copyright Infringement. It's really interesting how it talks about the terminology of it, how it's sometimes referred to as 'theft' and 'piracy'. It even mentions how there was a judge who forced a corporation to remove the word 'piracy' from a lawsuit against someone who had downloaded something illegally, because it was a misleading description.

I don't mid people pirating movies or games, you deserve to have a good time even if you can't afford it. The only time I think it actually bad is with indie games, most of them are very cheap and those studios really need the money to keep existing

I always thought it was weird that people compare piracy to theft.When you pirate stuff, it's more like copying homework without permission. If you do that you're not depriving your colleague of his homework. To consider it theft companies have to argue they already own the money of a possible future sale.

At the very least they could argue that some portion of those people pirating the software would have paid for the software. The end result is less revenue for the company making it and in some cases it could lead to bankruptcy of the company in the long run, regardless of if the software is pirated for free or you pay some small amount for it. Some companies don't even exist now because of piracy.

While you're not stealing a physical good, it's still something someone had to work for to make, that labor and time has a value. However, if you pirate anything from a large studio or publishers the devs/staff already got paid, since that was part of the development budget, the only ones missing out on money is the publisher.

The cost is dealt with capital and revenue, and so by definition it falls on the employer (or the creator if he's working solo) himself to cover them, not the people who seek the product. People are prompted by demand, not to recompensate the work that went in making the product. Demand is informed by scarcity, not artificial scarcity (like IP).

I totally agree with this video, finally someone who speaks up about this. The music companies like Universal or Sony Music have been waging war against people for years. I heard of a case that happened a couple of years ago where a woman had to pay over $ 10 000 for downloading something like 60 songs. The music companies argued that the songs were theft, and the woman had to pay hundreds of dollars in fines per song because it was legally considered theft to use something like napster.

A lot of this stuff is actually fake news that record companies USED to deinsentivize people from 'pirating' things. The vast majority of these cases are a slap on the wrist, settled outside of court (usually the person promises really hard never to do it again). Or which is the most common, they almost NEVER get people for downloading, its always distributing. Be careful about reading those articles. I sincerely sincerely doubt that the court actually prosecuted someone on 60 pirated songs and charged them each a fine for each one of them treating it as theft. What was likely was that the prosecuter used the law as it was stated to get the harshest sentence possible and which then allows the defense to negotiate down from there, so that they can say they got them on something (which is sadly a common tactic in law). The reason being that the average American cannot pay 40k, and if you're pirating songs you definitely aren't wealthy, the average American would be financially crippled from a random $300.00 bill they got for the month (real statistic you can look up.) But this was a marketing tactic that record companies used similar to the McDonalds coffee scandal, that they failed miserably on but want you to think they got big wins on. Edit: Keep in mind you can be charged with something (charged with 50 counts of theft amounting to X amount in damages and paying for X amount in fines) and then the prosecution settles with you out of court, meaning you don't pay for any fines or damages because you're a poor sap. Most of the time, if a person gets sued its so they can shut down your distribution platform, there's been barely any cases of anyone actually accruing damages from being sued by a record company in court over pirated music unless they were selling or distributing.

there is a really cool YT video named "The people who were sued for downloading music... whatever happened to them?". The gist is that the music industry tried to target individuals who pirated music and they failed tremendously because: 1. the law was pretty interpretable at the time (and it still kinda is), so really long trials; 2. trials were expensive and the records companies got jack shit from them. Ofc a random, mediocre citizen won't ever pay a fine of 100.000$, so all the people who were condemned or who settled the lawsuit outside of court just declared personal insolvency and that was it 3. really bad PR publicity. Imagine being a record company and getting on the first page of all newspapers for hunting highschool kids cause of piracy. Madness :S So they all gave up and f***ed off, but they still complain that piracy "destroys" their industry to this day

My problem with calling something piracy is how you going to fine me when your stuff is available for free by using a different service than you. That always baffles me like how when I pay 60 dollars for a game and am forced to agree to TOS if I want to play it or is this when pirating is okay?

One thing that always feels like an excuse is whenever companies complain about piracy of their software losing them sales. A lot of the time when somebody pirates something, it's because they either can't afford it, or wanna try it out before buying it, there's no sales lost there. The person without the money wouldn't have been able to buy it anyways, and the person trying it out usually buys it after pirating it, unless they genuinely didn't like the product, and would probably try to get a refund. That excuse usually comes from huge companies who wouldn't even be affected by lost sales that much anyways, the only time you shouldn't pirate something is if you wanna financially support the creator of that work, like with indie game studios.

It reminds me of KSI who pirated Vegas Pro while crying out about people pirating his movie :D

I still remember that some years ago the devs for the game "Darkwood" put their game on TPB. A few days later multiple journos wrote about it, and thus they basically received free advertising; iirc the game sold pretty well for an indie. Pretty based imo. And the game is great.

The game got a lot of extra sales even before the journos wrote about this. People just downloaded it, liked it and bought it. I've done the same thing with dozens of games, and have friends who do the same. It's the idiot devs fault for not giving us demos anymore.

Your voice are so calming, i let your videos run on the background while i do mundane tasks like modding skyrim, rimworld, or just let it play on my PC when i play mobile games.

When I was a kid, I didn't have a credit card and convincing my parents that I needed this game or that movie wasn't something I was keen to do. Plus, this way my parents didn't have to pay for it at all.

Glad you remembered to mention the exception of smaller creators. They rarely have any power by influence sadly, buying physical copies are a great way to promote their stuff, and they often take a lot of care in making it good

I think you actually nailed it at the top of it's definition and actual facts. Using non licensed software activated in a way or another it will bring more people to buy at some point. Even the free advertising that is a fu**ing lot (otherwise it would be needed a ton of money to reach to so many people), it helps on the long run. Of course, i have to underline, for the BIG companies it is. For small business, it may be 50-50%. They know from the beginning the way it will work and they'll need to bring up their strategies to survive that times. Regarding "small" musicians and other people like that, yeah, they really really need support. Love your content bruh. Keep it on. At some point i will go for youtube red or w/e is called, but for now i just spread the word for your work. No income is bad and i still help ppl in RL a lot, but almost nobody helps me. But i keep going and people like you make me want to go on. So keep it tight, and be well man! Cheers

I remember when my parents bought Photoshop back in 2011. It was cheap, but it worked fine. Now, with annual subscriptions, and Adobe making old software not work, I'd rather download cracked Photoshop and use it while I can.

I like to see piracy as competition to the actual paid product, especially for games and movies: if your game has intrusive DRM and an always online requirement, or do stuff like region locks, people will just pirate it. This is why stuff like Netflix and Steam are so good: they give an a convenient and legal way to enjoy the content, much more convenient than pirating it.

When I was a broke student I pirated everything I could. Then I discovered Open Source and portable software, and I stopped pirating software because it was more convenient. Now that things are somewhat better income wise I rarely pirate media. I buy on steam, gog, humble bundle. I share Netflix, Disney and Amazon prime accounts. I barely have time to pirate stuff anymore. Gabe Newell was right, piracy was a matter of convenience.

All though quality wise piracy is better as you can get 1:1 Blu-ray rips but that comes down to how big you are on home theater

This is exactly what happened with me and After Effects. The 7 day trial is not enough to create and explore with it... Instead I pirated after effects for only a few months before I ended up buying the entire creative cloud. Without piracy, I would not pursuing motion graphics as a professional career and Adobe would not have a single dime from me

Piracy was the only way i (roughly most people in my country as well) could get to play videogames (PS1 and PS2), a whole country... not only did it not make a significant change on sony's sales performance, but also Brazil is one of the bigger gaming market out there. But honestly, my bigger "like" to piracy is the hability to preserve things as they were (movies, series, and some games, untouched)

recently started watching anime again *for free* and it's great. if i like the anime, i'll buy the blu-ray from japan. done giving my money to sony while they censor and alter the content i enjoy.

If I actually care about an artist I will find one way or another to support them. Big companies like spotify and apple music don't give a shit about the artist and give the artist the short end of the stick anyway. I literally only use spotify for it's song suggestion features to find similar music. There are other and more valid ways of supporting artist.

I've never had qualms about digital "piracy." Companies like to say I'm taking profit from them by not paying for my copies of files. But the whole point of me pirating is I can't pay for it, they wouldn't have gotten any money from me anyway.

I’d like to view piracy as a balancing act. Too little piracy: Companies get away with whatever they want, if governments go hard on piracy. Too much piracy: Companies begin noticing and get governments to go hard on piracy, leading to the first point. Piracy is… fine if there’s a limit.

being a major anime fan launched me into this behavior, and learning more about that industry kept it going. at this point i'm in the atmosphere.

7:28 Basically, piracy is what breaks the catch22 of not having money due to not having experience due to not having a program due to not having money in the first place. It's like some sort of a "Universal Basic Income" except without politics.

My reason for piracy: Subscriptions - I don't mind paying once for something I want to get but Subscriptions for something that is not a service just suck! (and slapping a forced cloud service no one uses anyways on it just to rectify it doesn't count) But I generally prefer open source applications where that is most often not the case anyways! ^^ edit: another reason for piracy (at least for me) is DRM restrictions (kinda ironic isn't it?) and geo blocking because I can get more content easier for free instead of paying for limited choice!

My reason for piracy: i live in brazil

I only started pirating movies and shows recently and my god I'll never go back to streaming. I think what prevented me from pirating for so long was how much anti-piracy propaganda there was and still is but especially in the 2000s which was definitely the height of the piracy scare. There's one anti-piracy PSA for VHS tapes that will forever stick in my mind, where a narrator says and with big text at the top saying "video piracy is a crime, do NOT accept it" and those words did scare me as a kid. But luckily I joined the good site and am now a based pirate sailing the seas

You have a great point right there. Especially for Adobe software.

You mentioned that "tech managers and stuff think that that most code = most productive" Well, I disagree with that point. On my experience, what I see is that tech managers let bloat pass because they have a policy of "get it working" regardless of whether it will run well or not -- and developers do not have the time to optimize, or even refactor those components unless they get specifically requested to do so. This on the long run creates bloated software.

I would compare software piracy to recieving a student license from the company itself. They know that once you're proficient in that particular program you're likely to require that program from your employer and they will absolutely have to pay for the license to avoid legal issues. Software piracy from large companies are a straight up good investment for them.

You didn't mention this: most people who pirate things wouldn't spend money on the thing. I wouldn't spend a cent on a program I pirated, so if piracy wasn't an option, I would just do something else

I'll at least say this, I will never own a legitimate copy of any Adobe software.

Straight to point, no lies, just facts. Good video. Btw the best example would be winrar, they become, almost, the monopoly for using compression on a enterprise and user level for files. They couldn't have done it without them making ordinary users not pay for their services. So it was just a legimate piracy for everyone to use, so to say. Same thing applies for many of the software around, aside from indie developers I guess.

we could replace all creative works with a 'free, but donate here plz' button, and due to the law of large numbers, there would be a staggering increase in profits across the board. Good indie artists would actually make real money, and the top 100 would change overnight forever. if someone really likes something they'll throw everything they have at it.

Back in the day we used to call closed source software that spied, spiked and performed unconsented actions MALWARE. Life was simple and straightforward.

I've honestly been using piracy to test a product out before committing to a purchase. It's safer than trusting the "trial periods" which require your card to sign up for, will start auto charging as soon as said trial period ends, and are notoriously difficult to cancel. I will say this though: free, open source software has proven far more powerful for me than any commercially sold product. Examples like DaVinci Resolve/OBS, MinGW/Notepad++, and even the Google Office suite have made my profession job and personal hobbies extremely easy to keep up with.

As an Engineer doing research, it's almost impossible to afford the softwares. I wish I knew how to crack them because some of the softwares I want are not even cracked.

@@mihai9647 I guess it's more of a 'right tool for right job' and experience thing. On Windows I have few other choices and it performs well; on GNU/Linux platforms I may just switch to either GCC or LLVM toolchain and they work fine as long as you make the step to get familiar with them, all of which are excellent pieces of software - just what you are used to. (In contradiction I used so much Adobe suite for video editing and visual effects that I just cannot get into other type of thinking, be it proprietary or FOSS - at least yet. Literally kidnapped. If I spend some time I might get better with other software too, just that I haven't turned away from Adobe yet.

@@mihai9647 there is vim plugins to turn it into an IDE and there are terminal programs/commands to troubleshoot your code. just my 2 cents : ]

True! In my country, in the 1990s, everybody had an illegal music cassette copy of Michael Jackson/ Depeche Mode/ Metallica/ etc.'s albums. All of these artists had, and some of them still have, huge concerts in my country! Piracy is a form of advertisement.

Speaking of going too far, making software subscription based is where I draw the line. That's just ASKING for piracy. No matter what companies do, hackers will always find a way around it.

I work in IT and dealing with subscription based software is an administrative nightmare. I perfectly understand why even corporations and governments in non western countries crack things.

I once saw a meme that said: "Piracy isn't stealing because the owner still has the thing. Imagine if your car got stolen but you still had the car".

Probably the most common reason at least from what I've seen, for pirating games & movies, is because of region-locked content, or very overpriced games and content. These companies push the limits so people result to doing other stuff and using alternative methods to just play a game. Modern day time has so many faults with stuff like that and I feel like companies are generally oblivious to how much the overprice stuff sometimes. online piracy is not exactly the best method, nor do I support it, but If a company is going to be dumb about pricing and region related stuff, then that's just the companies fault. The only issue with piracy today is that, like you mentioned, these apps can use extra resources or secretly monitor your stuff overtime, and all this time you'd be almost completely oblivious to it. The internet is a dangerous place and nothing should be trusted until you research. I remembering seeing this quote from 2011 by Gabe Newell. He'd said that "Piracy is an issue of service, not price", this is pretty much a sum up of one of the many reasons that people pirate your software. That's about all I have to say. I'd come across this video and wanted to put my comment out there in the world.

I still remember a time when you needed Adobe Flash to be able to watch any video online. It took a decision from the W3C on the HTML 5 standards to see more and more websites ditch the proprietary blackmail of Adobe. Unfortunately, it can go both ways.

There was a big EU funded research study conducted a few years ago on piracy, turns out it didn't harm the ecosystem concerning the product(s) in question, rather it helped them, though this study was suppressed to all hell because of that conclusion lol.

2:44 It's not only per-line incentives that bloat the code and hinder progress. Sometimes it's also good not to finish a feature as quickly as possible, but instead take your time and properly plan how to do it. Sometimes you want to refactor your code and not even create anything new. Stuff like this is really difficult to quantify and incentivize if you don't understand programming. The problem is also highly prevalent in academia, where you just want your code to run once and provide the results for your paper. When people then go on and try to replicate what you've done, it's oftentimes as slow as writing the whole thing from scratch.
