I know what you mean I love these things I had to cut some huge ones down on the farm that me and my deceased husband have because I scared the horses would run into the vine I should have just cut it dug up the mother root and let it be. But there's no way I rest a horse running into a muscadine because it was huge it would trip a horse in a minute however when I was eating those down I'm in the Deep South I'm glad you have such good memories of eating muscadine and scuppernong You have to excuse any spelling I'm this country is corn flakes😊

You could use a recumbent bicycle to prune those grapes at knee height.

I bought a bunch of preying mantis eggs from Amazon four years ago. I still see them in the garden and there's always egg sacks on the vines. I haven't seen more than a handful of Japanese beetles since and there were millions before. I don't know if that solved it or not, but they haven't been a problem for me in the past few years.

That's crazy cool. Never heard that before

I had a weak vine and it was a Cowart it barely got 6 feet down the trellis (2 feet one side and 4 The other). It was one of the two self fertile vines I planted late 2020 so I ordered a Paulk in 2021 and dug up the Cowart and gave it to a friend and put Paulk in its spot and it is already halfway down the trellis and looks like it will be vigorous. The Ison was the other self fertile and it was the strongest of the five I ordered in 2020 (2 year old plants). He made it down the wire early in the season and is very vigorous this year. I tightened the wire vise but there is so much leaf growth and grapes on the Ison and the Fry varieties that I had to put a t-post near the middle of each to help support the weight. I had thought I had overfertilized, but I have been following the Ison's schedule. Just using organic fertilizer and alfalfa meal and ground oyster shell, eggshells dissolved in vinegar that I apply at dusk on the 15th. I'm very happy with Ison's Nurseries. Their bare root plants are the way to go and they don't seem to struggle getting established like potted ones do. I've ordered blackberry plants, muscadines, various plum hybrids and cherry trees from Ison's. I did lose two trees to that late cold snap, but I didn't bother returning. I just ordered a cherry and a plum from Ison's to replace the ones that didn't make it. I do buy from Willis Orchards as well (mayhaw, chinquapin, almond & plumcot).

Try planting four o'clocks. They are are great trap plant for Japanese bettles. They fest on them and it kills them. Plants get to be two or three feet tall in sunny spots or in part shade, and they bloom from midsummer until frost. In my zone 8a climate their tubers overwinter. Maybe you can plant some nearby. South Mississippi here. New to muscadines so your wisdom is much appreciated. Just planted my first Triumph Muscadine. Set it next to an old fence in hopes that it will take to it. This morning I trimmed back the foliage growing on the trunk leaving the longer piece near the top. Got the idea from another grower. I’m clueless but I keep looking at pictures of those juicy fat grapes and repeat, I think I can, I think I can. Thanks again for sharing!!

SHANE! If you see this. Do me a favor. Drop ALL those Crushed Beetle Bodies at the root of each Plant. Let the Plant absorb them and help it learn. Also what about Raising Guinea Hens in pens and setting up T style roosts amount the field every 15 feet or so. Let them do predation on garden pests. 2 organic pest controls methods. Guinea fowls voracious appetite for ticks, grass hoppers and beetles may pay for muscadine health while you sip some dessert wine watching the flock tear through like fighter pilots.

I'm going through 3 shirts a day right now with all this humidity. I have neglected fertilizing my grapes this year so we'll see how the production is. I do not irrigate the grapes at our house in town and they look great despite the heat and dry weather. I did lose a fig tree there, as well as a plum and pomegranate, but I think they were struggling after that late freeze we had. Farming is always a struggle.

enjoyed this one a lot. I know what you mean bout slow growing. I think mine is the type. Lanes are still way behind while Halls are growing fast and almost to the ed of the wire. Gonna keep an eye on the lanes but one is just now to the top of the wire. Slow Slow Slow

I got some ruby crisp this year, 4 of them are almost to the end of the wire and 1 I just pinched and just started to split.

Shane great video. You’re right with your theory. I have some questions. I accidentally cut the tip of a vine that was at the end heading towards the end post. Will it still continue growing. It’s not at the end and obviously that’s my goal for this first year. I have some vines that will achieve hitting the 10ft growth others may take another year. My Ison is doing very well. David it should be fine. There's usually a bud really close that will try to pop ot and grow so don't worry. Sounds like they are doing great great. 2yr you should have grapes

Maybe check the irrigation spout on the small ones. Could be not producing as much water out.

Grateful for the information. Nice presentation. We're planning on allocating some ranch land to growing muscadine grapes (Southeast Oklahoma). Do you have a video about keeping animals (such as deer) away from eating them? Also, what do you recommend as a water source (if any) for the drip line(s) for an acre (or more) of trellis lines? You can use some solar alarms for deer but we never really have a big problem with them. It's crazy, deer all over the place out here but really not a big problem. I have a whole muscadine Playlist for most of your questions.

Just starting out on wanting to plant some muscadine vines at my house - love your videos! Question - if you have one plant that is doing really well and others that aren't - could you let a runner go out for a bit on one of the plants that is doing really well, cut it and stick it in water to get some roots and then plant it as a new plant?

It’s hard to kill a grapevine. The harder you prune the harder they grow & bear.

I love muscadines and scuppernongs and grapes what a blessing Lastly I got a quick question do I need to fertilize my grapevine it's not scuffled emits grapes I got a time off tomorrow to make them taller so they can reach out there in the shade and they're producing grapes any ideas?

Thank you so much I just found a huge crop of muscadine vines at the dump area at a local store I had tried some more were the houses of going up when they are developing some land and I knew they were going to cut them down so I just cut some and I think I have one growing but I'm not sure yet just how it's going to do. The one I've been blessed with today are are a bit of hardwood wood semi hardwood and softwood myself and softwood I stripped all the leaves off I hope I did okay I just put them in water at night so I can plan them tomorrow cuz it's blazing hot right now where I live so any suggestions you can give me I have been blessed with propagating plants before. I just hope I didn't strip too many leaves away. Any suggestions you could give me would be fantastic and I thank you so much😊 PS excuse any spelling I'm talking to the phone and I'm a southerner

Consider how much money you have spent on unproductive plants, how much time/production you lost waiting 2+ yrs before deciding to rip it out and replant - hoping you'll get a better plant this time. You're having to prune those exceptional vines anyway, just dip 'em and stick 'em when you get back to the shed. If they grow you win, if not you haven't lost anything but just a few minutes of time.

You would think ag chemical companies would develop a breeding cycle disrupter. Unfortunately, there is more money in grain chemical research, and development.

Have you tried Milky Spore to kill off the beetle grubs? I started using it last year and the beetles weren't as bad as the previous year.

I bought a property September last yeat,it has muscadines /varities.It has been so neglected - Any tips on cutting back,cleaning up this massive mess. massively overgrown.. i got some 3 - 4 inch trees coming through, and many smaller. Been nervouse i dentifying to cut out bad stuff and not cut grape vine. Big tangle, grapes ;ast year, nothing this year? My grapes are in one long row propably 100 foot plus

Hey Shane, you know what's weird, I haven't seen 1 Japanese Beetle this year, but this other Beetle showed up😨. It kinda looks like a Cucumber Beetle but it doesn't bother them !? I hope your Grapes do well despite those nasty Beetles 😝. JO JO IN VT 😆💕

If i only had room for 1 variety, which one should i plant for taste? Im not worried about the most productive variety. I would rather choose the best tasting. I've heard Southern Home is top teir. Would that be true, or another verify considered better?

Hi Shane! I have a question that I'm hoping you might be able to answer. I have 3 muscadine vines that were given to me by some friends. They rooted them from their own vines last year, and they were planted at my home in East Central AL this March. Just a leafless rooted vine cutting with no runners at all when planted. My friends have maintained that these vines should run 10' down the wire each direction by the end of this year. However, despite keeping them watered and fertilizing monthly, the vines have only run anywhere from 15" - 2.5' in each direction. They are incredibly bushy at the top, no weed competition, and I've kept the trunks clean. They look mostly happy, they just aren't growing as quickly as my friends say they should. What has been your experience on how long a vine should take to run a full 10' down the wires? Any other insight? Thanks!

Some just grow better than others. I would cut everything ba k to 6 inches except for the 2 tou want to run down the wire. I've delt with this and I just replaced the ones that don't want to grow and try again with hopefully some better plants

Yes I have and my theory is correct, some plants are just stronger than others

I am in IN and just started hobby growing. Currants(black, red, and white) and grapes (Muscadine, sommerset, and Geneva red) no joke those Japanese beetles are absolute monsters! Have you seen the little aphids on the ends of New growth being herded by ants? Not sure what to do about that. This year I have just been cutting off the area infested with the buggers and put it on pavement and crush/grind it. Should be getting some muscadines before too long. They are starting to switch from green to slightly tinged with purple ish red ish. What exactly do you use for the Japanese beetles? I have tried planting several fruit trees and withing a few days the bastards kill them. I've done the traps but they just aren't enough. (And I am leary about chemicals. IN does not have a pleasant history with pesticides playing nice with nature or humans)

Aphids don't hurt anything. Traps work a little. I use liquid seven. It does the trick

@@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia Yeah, they retreat into the ground and grub..............can't remember if it's fall, winter and thinking spring may be too late..........................I had 2 ac w/60' old timey perennial garden w/rose beds all over they would eat me alive every year. Cost me a fortune in beetle traps and if the home had not burned down I eventually would have started a treatment program (after I learned), especially if I was growing food

Yes and self fertle. You want female and self fertle. You a self fertle within 50 ft. Of the female to help cross pollinate. Self fertle pollinate themselves

I just want to say I really enjoy your videos but just being honest I really would like to have a phone number to isons nursery that they will answer if you have it because I ordered a bunch of irrigation fittings from them and haven’t received them I’ve sent emails with no response and tried calling them with no answer and just saying they got my money but I have no product. I know you don’t work for them but I did order from them based on your recommendation about them so I’m hoping you can help me but keep up with the videos I enjoy watching them thanks
