I see where the natural cracks in the unfinished side of the titura on my shel rosh are. Didn’t know they were natural and part of the leather. Thanks, Rabbi Kass!

The problem arise from the fact that the compartments begin to separate and disturb the perfect square ratio of the sides. One side becomes slightly wider then the other, which does posul the tfillins.

I will make a video to discuss that particular scenario. It's not black and white.

In Ohio is there a shop close by to Fairborn where I can get this done at instead of traveling to a different state to get the Tefflin restored to it's former glory 😅

can you please tell me what you use to seal a small crack in the base?

Leather powder and a synthetic glue. However this is not something that the layman should try to fix, it should be brought to a professional Sofer for repair as there are many potential issues that you would need to be aware of that could come up while trying to do such a repair.

If the tefillin are checked every year, will this accelerate the breakdown of the boxes and require them to be replaced?

Not to my knowledge. But by checking them regularly we can fix many problems that may develop over time.
