Kind of an open letter to Tech 21. I really like this product, I bought it with my own cash money. There are however a few things I'd like to tweak. I thought I'd run them by you (assuming you are a user of the unit or have tried it) to get your thoughts on my potential modifications.

    I think you mentioned it, the regular flyrig v2 has the pre/post boost option. (still regular red color). 2 different kind of drives, plexi/mesa(ish) and an fx loop, which would allow you to add rotary/vibrato/chorus after the drive. What I like about the regular flyrig is the sansamp cabinet emulation is independent of the "blonde" preamp section. Personally I like the omg drive, and love Ritchie's sound.

    Yes, I looked at the regular fly rig, but the thing that sold me on Richie's was the rotary. I think the OMG is good, it's just a bit too rock for me. I'm not that heavy a player. Richie gets a great sound and I really like what he does, I'm just not going for that. I think the regular pedal also has the sansamp as a foot-switchable option? Both great units. If I knew someone that could do it, I'd get my RK5 modded, so that I could foot-switch the leslie and not bother with the OMG. Cheers, Ben.

    so torn if choosing rk5 v2 or fr5 v2...if RK just had defeatable cab sim I would buy it in an instance... that one small tweak in fr5 v2 gives it the ultimate simultaneous output to whatever backline amp (cabsim off) and to FOH(with cabsim through xlr).... But I like the inclusion of a fuzz and a comp in the RK... its hard to choose...sure I could add any fuzz before regular fr5 v2, but that kills the beauty of having only one simple unit that does it all(almost) Ahhh..hope that rk5 v3 will have cabsim defeat in its sansamp:)

    Thank you! It is an RT, good spot. I've changed the pickups, but they're a sweet guitar for very little money. I think I paid 150 for mine, but it is the lowest spec one they ever did I think. The Fly Rig is great, but I'm not sure I'd be happy to use it as a full direct solution. I'm still using it (I used it tonight!) but the direct feature would just be an emergency for me. I use an Atomic Amplifirebox when going direct. Interestingly I use it through the Fly Rig for effects. That way I always have a backup with me, even when using a modelling pedal. The analogue cab sim on the Fly Rig is good, but it is fizzy. I had a bit more success using it through an IR loader. You're right, the audience absolutely won't notice the difference, but if you're like me you'll find that plastic sounding fizz off-putting when you play. They're really close with this tech, but not quite good enough for me to ditch an amp. Now its ability to change an amp I don't like in to one that I do...that they nailed!

    Thank you! I play in standard tuning most of the time and very occasionally in open G. I think it's a useful skill to be able to play in standard, as that way you can just play slide whenever you feel like it in a gig, even in the middle of a song. I think open tuning gives you a particular sound, but I can't see much of an advantage for playing in all 12 keys with your guitar tuned to a chord. Obviously it can be done and it might work for you. This jam was definitely in standard, as that floating bridge doesn't enjoy being re-tuned! Thanks for the comment and hello from Weston Super Mare!

    I will get rid of the on off switch for the reverb. I mean during a show you want that kind of effect either on or off without going back and forth, and i will use that switch on or off the leslie side if it. That way you can use the leslie and the delay together. By the way i use it with a double ts style od before the drive section and with a mini spark booster after it

  • @BenFletcherGuitar

    @BenFletcherGuitar

    4 ай бұрын

    That's a neat idea and I agree it's rare that you turn off the verb in the middle of a song. I'm not sure the leslie could be used at the same time as the delay, because I think the internal components responsible for the delay are being used by the leslie, which is a shame. Seems like a lot of people are pairing this with their favourite drive. Maybe they should release an effects only version of this, that's a little shorter, but with foot switchable leslie? People could just do what you and I and many others are doing and just incorporate it in to a small board. I find the sans amp to be incredibly useful in some situations, so I'd definitely want that included too.

    Thank you, Timothy! I'm surprised it's pricey in the States. I assumed that we'd pay a premium here in the UK due to import charges etc (which are horrendous!) but being a New York company, I thought it would be cheaper for you. They are small though and manufacturing something as complex as this type of unit must be fairly costly, especially if it's done in the US. I like the fact they're making something really different, that's difficult in a saturated market. Thanks for the comment, as always it's much appreciated, Ben.

    Agree on trading Comp for Pre/Post Boost. Re changing Fuzz/OMG to else...your demos show you running the OMG Drive above Noon...how is it with settings below Noon? Seems with Boost pushing it (OMG) gives you Fuzz (when running SansAmp) so i agree else could be used. Also very fond of pre-gain bass contour to better control amount and character of od/distortion

  • @BenFletcherGuitar

    I find the OMG speaks the best when the drive is about 2.00. I find lower gain settings to be a bit stucky sounding, not very fluid. I can get lower gain tones by cleaning up with the guitar, so tend to run my drives pretty hot. The exception here is the fuzz that just turns to mush when it's run too high. Somewhere around 11.00 is maybe the sweet spot for me on that, but I have to be honest I've never used it in a gig. Still using this pedal for my gigs by the way, despite the things I'd want to change, I find it to be very practical.

    What settings on your delay produce that ambient expansion effect without obvious repeats or echo?

  • @BenFletcherGuitar

    @BenFletcherGuitar

    11 ай бұрын

    Hi, I keep trying to reply to your comments but KZread won't show me them when I click the link, sorry about that! I'm not certain I know what you mean, but both the Carbon Copy and this delay have modulation. I feel like that sounds more immersive as the repeats are different to the initial note, kinda like they would be if they were reflected off multiple surfaces. I also record everything through two channels off an IR loader. That allows me to add stereo wideners to my guitar tracks, which as the name suggests, sound very wide! I also try to sync my delay with the speed of the track (not something I bother with live). When the delay is in time with the drums, you probably don't notice how much delay I have running, but it's a healthy amount. It's probably pretty deceptive how much of it there is. Hope that answers your question? Cheers, Ben.

    @@BenFletcherGuitar You had mentioned once that you do not use delay like most that you use it as an ambient effect. And that is what I hear. So how many repeats are there that I don't hear, maybe 7? It is so smooth and doesn't come back on you moving to other notes. Do not know how you do that.

  • @BenFletcherGuitar

    @BenFletcherGuitar

    11 ай бұрын

    @@philliphanford2792 I do like to use delay on sustained clean chords, they just seem to hold on there a little longer. In terms of lead of playing, it's just a simple delay with maybe 3 or 4 repeats I reckon, somewhere around the 400ms mark. I will say that playing with a slide a lot is going to dramatically reduce the transient and so the delay won't seem so extreme. If you were to really lay in to the note with a sharp attack you'd probably hear a fair bit more of it. Also, some of the notes I play, I tend to violin them, but not all the way off. I have the guitar volume backed off a bit and gradually bring it up as the note decays. I think all of these things combined gives me quite a swelling sort of sound that people have commented on at gigs before. In general though I really do think the delay vanishes in the mix if it's in sync with the track. You get the effect of the size it's producing but the repeats aren't so prominent. Since I don't tap tempo my delays on gigs, I would think they're a bit more noticeable live...particularly when I make a mistake, because you'll hear it three times! Ha!

    Too kind, thanks man! Like you, I'm not much in to the shred style of things either, that Ibanez was an attempt they made in the early 90's to try and make a more 'vintage' RG. It's called an RT 240. It has a bigger neck than an RG and a two point trem instead of a floyd. The scratchplate is a beauty isn't it?! Attractively ugly! It came with the guitar and is one of the things that caught my eye on eBay. I got the guitar completely stock for I think 120 quid, probably about 16 years ago. The only mods are the pickups and wiring. It's got a Gibson 498T in the bridge and a Dimarzio Crusier in the neck now. The wiring is a modified Gibson 50's wiring, but the tone only works for the bridge. Since it's only got one tone and I always back it off in bridge position but never turn the tone down on the neck, I just thought it would make it easier to flick between the two. I ripped out the middle pickup and blocked it off with a lid from a tub of car body filler. They still go for peanuts used, bit of a sleeper maybe. Cheers, Ben.
