My systems - Matata Hill
This short video presents and describes the progress of our first system at livingness - Matata Hill.
Livingness Agroforestry Systems Series
System #1: “Matata Hill”
Implementation date: November 2018
Location: Uki, NSW, Australia, South Hemisphere, Gaia.
Area: 400m2 (roughly 25 x 16m)
Climate: Cool subtropical (1 to 5 mild frost days per year)
Aspect: North West
Slope: 35% to 50% gradient (raises 35 to 50cm for every metre)
Row orientation: N/S (not quite on contour)
Row spacings: 3m
Total number of islands: 40
Island size: 60 x 60cm
Initial soil cover: bare soil with minimal cover (leaf litter) plenty of bracken fern (Pteridium esculentum), weak paspalum grass (Paspalum diatatum), farmer’s friend (Bidens pilosa) and blue billygoat weed (Ageratum houstonianum).
Top soil depth: no top soil
Soil life: minimal with plenty of bracken fern roots no worms
Soil condition: verry compact, heavy yellow (ish) very close to the surface with minimal soil life and cover.
Context:
• minimal economic investment,
• close participatory management,
• no veggie production
• regeneration with hope for food production later, mainly accumulation of organic matter and life processes

On such a steep hill the water will indeed run of instead of sinking in. Have you considered ‘swales’ to keep the water on your property? Rainwater Harvesting seems very important in your case (and it always is I guess)
Do you have experience wit establish forestgarden in the forest. I try now to do on the forest adge. I toped some fagus and fraxinus about 10m high. The trees are about 30cm in diameter. But on the forest adge a have also large fraxinus and quercus first bruntches at 15m. I will live tham alone. But if you leve mature trees in the system do they supress grow ore how to deel with it. If i syncronize all other plants around them can i ignore tham?
