I am not perfect environmentalist either, however I am doing my best here 😌. It is hard with so many influncers these days....H&M, Zara clothing being promoted everywhere. I try to follow minimalist and people that inspire me, like you Mimi 🥰. I mostly buy items from Cos, &other stories and always check the labels now. Cos and &other stories are also a part of H&M group but they’re more focused on offering a bit higher end image than H&M, more expensive items and better quality materials. I agree, it’s hard with so many influencers promoting fast fashion brands and every week there is a different “must have “. The major thing I have done, after quitting my job of 14 years at H&M, was to start buying only second hand. It’s been a year now, and I mostly buy from other people selling their clothes on line. You got amazing bargains even new or barely used items and even higher end brands. I don’t think I’m ever going back to old way of shopping at high street stores.

Thank you for sharing your journey with sustainable fashion, Mimi! It's so important to be amplifying the dangers and destruction of the fast fashion industry. I've been on my journey with sustainable and ethical fashion for the past 3 years or so and you definitely learn a lot once you actually pay attention to the intricacies of the industry and its impact on both people and the planet. To me, the most important thing besides the environmental destruction is the impact on people, specifically the garment workers. Knowing we support companies that do not pay their workers fair and living wages, exploit them and allow them to work in unethical and dangerous environments does not sit right with me. More than anything, the fast fashion industry does a great job at hiding the hidden cost (I highly recommend the True Cost documentary) of our clothing whilst also pushing consumerism at its core. Along those same lines, I truly believe the most sustainable thing we can do with our clothing is simply buy less and choose well and wear what we already own. Getting rid of old clothing to buy completely new sort of does the opposite in the sustainability front and it's so valuable to take a hard look and reflect on our relationship with clothing and consumerism. Thrifting is a brilliant way to curb fast fashion, but fast fashion habits can definitely trickle in with constantly buying and consuming without any conscious thinking. I blame capitalism and the billionaire companies whom convince us we're nothing without their 50 trends a year. Sustainability and ethical fashion is so nuanced and definitely takes a lot of conscious and critical thinking, so I'm glad you are having this conversation on your platform and many folks are learning and unlearning about their relationship with fashion!

Lots of great ideas on clothes. I started with my makeup collection that was out of hand. I was just buying makeup because it was trendy. Now I have started looking for cleaner items and I don’t buy more make up until I have finished the one I purchased. It’s the company who chose the fabric and place an order to the garment factory in Bangladesh. For your kind information Bangladesh has all kind of fabrics and especially people from Bangladesh likes cotton because the temperature is hot there. How much do you know about Bangladesh? Please make it correct that brands choose their fabrics not Bangladesh.

Loved this video. Wish more young people saw this and realise the impact their fast fashion purchases are having on the environment. Fashion bloggers and social media are just escalating the issue as people (especially younger generations) are bombarded daily with trends and what they should be wearing to "fit in". I loved hearing about your journey! As I am slowly ending my twenties, I have had a similar experience wherein I focus on quality vs quantity and look at the materials. I love the rise of pre-loved luxury fashion and your point about selling those pieces more easily is so true. Its a much better use of your money from a quality perspective but also from an investment perspective as you will get a good amount back once sold. Thank you Mimi! It's so nice to have you back here on KZread, Mimi! Accidentally I'm on the same way as you are. I'm used to wear clothes made of natural fibres all my life anyway, but not every piece made of cotton etc is sustainable. Furthermore the cheaper clothes are often not cut and/or sewed well, so the garment becomes soon unattractive. With some help from fashion designers I found out to which things I should be vigilant about. I also did and still do some research which fashion label is producing environmentally friendly and paying a fair price to the people who participate in the production. This is quite an interesting journey and one appreciates the clothes even more if one knows how they are made. Here in Germany we have a label called Armedangels which fulfills all these conditions and I love to buy lots of clothes there. You can already feel on your skin the quality and the fact that they don't smell at all, makes me happy. So I don't mind to pay about 80 Euro for some pants for example. I'm curious about your experiences and can't wait for your next video! 🤗❤️

I think Massimo Dutti is not that bad. There, you can buy many items made out of natural fibers. I love their cashmere, silk, and linen pieces. I personally have some of their items for 10+ years.

I stopped to buy fast fashion in 2017 with a few exceptions now and then for Massimo Dutti because I need to use formal clothes or even suits to work. I do think their clothes tend to last a little bit more when compared with Zara and similars, and I usually buy the ones that are made in my country (Portugal). However, I have noticed that the majority of their garments nowadays only recommend dry cleaning with tetrachlorethylene, they forbid any other type of wash. This is quite problematic for me because tetrachlorethylene is very toxic to be in direct contact with our skin and doesn't seem to be eco-friendly at all. What a shame! 😔

Love to watch ur sit down videos. Very informative and Im going to be very alert when I buy stuff. I was already avoiding buying polyester bcz I didnt find it comfortable but thanks to u now I know why it didnt feel great on skin...

I'm also curvy and this aspect is usually left out of the conversation. It's harder for those with bigger bodies to find clothes that fit much less with natural fabrics. Like you pointed out these clothes also tend to be higher priced.

This video resonated with me because right now I am working my way through my home doing the exact same thing but with my home decor. I’m decluttering massively all the junk that I’ve accumulated throughout the years and removing these items only to replace them with higher end items or real plants. I want to surround myself with beautiful things but not have a jam packed cluttered house. The same should go for our wardrobe. You’ve inspired me to take this concept into my closet and move forward by buying only pure natural high quality items. Can you recommend a winter coat? I looked on Burberry website and was sad to see that the $1500 coat I wanted had a lot of polyester. You’re so right about checking the labels. Thank you 😊 ❤

As a knitter i do not buy top garments now and socks because i make my own. And i always go for natural based fiber for the top like bamboo or linen for summer and diff types of wool for colder seasons. There is 1 place for plastic for me, socks. Because they need durability. And nylon is what knitters commonly use. 15 to 20% nylon content yarns are usually common.

I think it's great that you are conscious about the environment and are mindful about your purchases. I just wanted to provide a couple of unsolicited remarks. First of all, people do buy second hand polyester and second hand everything. Also, materials like cashmere, wool, or silk do not "come from the environment". Animals are exploited for you to wear these. And last but not least, have you considered pieces made of recycled materials, including plastic?

I’ve been doing the same, buying what I love, will use, and appreciate. I splurged recently on a cashmere sweater and it was the best decision. It’s warm, soft, and is wearing well. I got rid of the sweaters that were uncomfortable. Not to mention, that most people only wear 20% of their wardrobes, so why not pare down and have what you really love. Quality > quantity.

Yes, more videos like this! Capsule wardrobes, anything! I am trying to take my wardrobe seriously that is responsible for me and for the environment. It's hard, because I love fashion and variety but am really starting to value less is more and quality over quantity. Any tips that will help me know that I will get that cost per wear.

I also started renting through Nuuly that have Anthropologie, Free People, etc. I was SHOCKED to get some items and it felt cheap and then I checked the tag and it was polyester.
