    the 100-400 is a fantastic lens, wide enough on the short end and tight enough for cross field shots, paired with g master quality. I love it and don’t regret not getting the 70-200 gm2

    Sony definitely needs to release a FX60, a camcorder body of FX30. To save cost and weight, I'd go with a 70-350 G lens.

    Thanks Peter for walking through that. I've been doing more and more soccer stuff, I'm finding having to remember to change batteries at half time is a pain, and I'd rather be able to just plug in and not have to worry about my monitor and my camera. I was looking at the small rig plate that doesn't require rails ... seems nice as it's on a quick release plate, and the batter is on a hing and can fold outwards to get access to the screen ... great to see how pros rig their cameras. Thanks

    Wouldn’t say that all pros rig their cameras using smallrig, I think that depends on where you work and the type of work you do lol. Tbh whatever gear is convenient for you and lets you do the best work is what you should use, regardless of what is “right”

    Awesome video Peter. I’m getting into sports videography for football and basketball and your channel and videos have been a huge help. Do you plan to use the fx30 as a main cam for basketball also?

  • @petersarellas

    @petersarellas

    For basketball I’d likely use the FX3 with the Tamron 35-150 or a 70-200mm depending on how far I am from the court, but the fx30 with the right lens is certainly useable for basketball

  • @petersarellas

    Slightly front heavy but unless it is very loosely unlocked it won’t tip forward when left alone, and even if it does the hi hat doesn’t get toppled over

    You mentioned using More Stabilization. Any recommendations other than using "Active" you spoke about in your FX30 settings video. Telephoto video is the hardest genre to shoot and you make it look easy...

  • @petersarellas

    @petersarellas

    3 күн бұрын

    If you’re handheld then using a lens with stabilization to pair with the stabilization of your camera body will help a lot as well. For extra stability a monopod, tripod, or hi hat (as I have been using in this set up) will give you even more stable footage. As far as shooting telephoto goes, the best advice I can say is to try different settings and equipment until you find something that you’re comfortable with and most importantly, practice shooting a ton.

    Honestly just depends on what you’re shooting for and personal preference. There isn’t a clear answer to one lens over the other that will apply to all people so your best bet is to rent them and see which one you prefer.

  • @lcerwinske

    It's really interesting to me you've been using the 4.5-5.6 lens recently. It really breaks the stereotype of needing a 2.8 or even a 4.0 lens to make good content (which I know you've mentioned before). Do you see any quality lost when using higher apertures for close ups? Also, why the switch back to the sonyfx30? Doesn't the FX3 perform way better in low light?

  • @petersarellas

    @petersarellas

    4 күн бұрын

    I don’t see any quality loss using a smaller aperture/higher f-stop, and find that I get depth of field that’s plenty shallow from the focal length. Definitely don’t need an f2.8, especially when more telephoto, and I enjoy how the higher f-stop makes pulling manual easier as well. Using the Sony FX30 more nowadays because I like the extra reach of the crop sensor, and shooting in the stadiums that I’m in, I have just enough light to properly expose 60fps on that body at the dual base ISO of 2500 at f5.6

    Do you use focus hold on the lens function buttons? After I got my hi hat and fluid head, I found my self holding the tripod and lens more than the actual camera… so I couldn’t hold the focus button to make sure the autofocus didn’t hit something else.

  • @petersarellas

    I have the custom buttons on the lens set to switch between AF and MF so I can “hold” focus by switching to MF then pull manual for a bit if I need and switch back when I want

    question, have you had situations where the ground in uneven and what do you do in this instance? iv tried to even out the legs after using balance level to compensate but this is not ideal if im moving locations during the game. I see that some NFL films cam ops mount their hi-hat to a wooden board but i dont know what their reason is.

  • @petersarellas

    @petersarellas

    4 күн бұрын

    Never seen the wooden board trick but I imagine that’d be handy for keeping more level ground. If the ground is a bit uneven I’ll usually either adjust the position of my ball head if it isn’t perfectly level or slightly kick one of the hi hat legs in to even out the horizon. Fortunately I’d say that this isn’t an issue that I run into too often during a game as long as the head is correctly positioned to start

    This channel has been very helpful to me. But it’s becoming a commercial for various videography products. Maybe that’s due to the fact that it’s the off season.

  • @petersarellas

    @petersarellas

    3 күн бұрын

    Tbh the questions I get most often happen to be about gear and so I’m making videos to answer those questions. It’s also worth mentioning that none of the makers of these products sponsor me or have any say in these videos. If that is the case for a specific video (which it hardly has ever been) I’ll always be sure to explicitly mention it at the beginning of that video. If you’re a fan of the in-season content, then you’ll be happy to know that I have plenty of that in the pipeline right now as well, along with video editing tutorials, subscriber showcases, and other types of content that I regularly publish here.
