To be fair, Dominique was known more as a scorer than a defender. But that said, Bird had no weaknesses on the offensive side of the floor. Take any "good defender" from the 80s and Bird got his shot on all of them.

Your son kept talking about how all the other players on his team were all-stars. What he doesn't seem to know is that the year before Bird came, the Celtics were horrible. In 1978-79 they were 29-53, second worst in the NBA. Add Larry Bird, and in 1979-80 and the Celtics were 61-21, the best record in the NBA, a one year move from 21st place out of 22 teams to 1st place out of 22 teams. Can you name any other player who has had that much impact on a team? The other players became all-stars because Bird made them better. He also missed that Bird is the only non-center to ever win 3 MVP awards in a row, but more amazing, he finished in the top 3 in MVP voting 8 years in a row. Oh, and Bird is not a point guard, he's a forward.

This might be the most frustrating thing I've ever watched. The amount of disrespect, not just to Larry, but to all players in Larry's era. He said Larry didn't play against anyone. And said he could beat all the players Larry played against. Isaiah Thomas, Julius Erving, Charles Barkley, Magic Johnson, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Scottie Pippen, Michael Jordan, Clyde Drexler, Karl Malone, John Stockton, I could go on and on. Not to mention, they actually failed hard back then, and got called for traveling, two things that don't happen in today's game.

The young man has no idea what he is saying. Bird is the best all-around player of all time. I looked at 8 different categories and where each of these players places in the top 250 NBA players of all time The categories are Field goal % Points per game Assists per game Steals per game Rebounds per game Blocks per game Free throw % Minutes per game I could only find 1 player that was in the top 250 of all time - Larry Bird. Magic isn't, Jordan isn't, Kareem isn't, Lebron isn't, Kobe isn't, Barkley isn't Chamberlain isn't, Russell isn't, Stockton isn't, Nash isn't, Duncan isn't, Nowitzki isn't , etc. and the list goes on and on As a matter of fact Bird is in the top 60 of all time in 6 of the 8 categories. Bird won 73.58% of the games he played in Lebron has won 66.34% of the games he has played in Bird did not go trying to make super teams to win - he did it all with 1 team Bird is only the 3rd player to win 3 straight MVP's (Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain are the others) Bird started the 50-40-90 club and is only 1 of 2 players to do it in back to back years (Steve Nash is the other) , Lebron has never done it. When Lebron was asked who he thought the 3 greatest players of all time were his response was Larry Bird, Dr. J and Michael Jordan. Stop with the nonsense that Lebron is even close to Bird. Lebron is not even in the top 10 all-time.

And Bird is custom-made for today’s game: big man who could shoot threes all day.

@@lukaz3336 Larry won his first championship nearly out the gate, plus he has more accolades in the day of tough competition; let alone only playing 13 years. How long did it take Lebron? Have you researched how good Bird was with the injuries he had even at the end of his career? Bird was putting points up and driving his time to wins with severe injuries. Without injuries how many times has Lebron motivated his team/s to win. BTW how long did it take Lebron to start performing where he won a championship? Dude stop feeling and thinking and learn and know. You will have a platform to speak from and present yourself so much better.

@@jaykay9695 What's your point? It also took Jordan up until he was almost 30 to win his first championship. He entered the league in 1984 and won in 91 for the first time. Also Larry Bird didn't even win finals mvp when he won his first title, as a matter a fact he didn't play very well in that first finals appearance. LeBron came into the league playing on the worst team in the league by far. The Celtics were in great condition early on when Bird came into the league. So your comparison there is just not valid. It took Jordan 7 years to win his first ring and LeBron 8 years...

There is a reason he is called Larry Legend. Larry was a 6'9" SF. Bird only played 13 seasons. Yes, he played with 4 HOFs, however the thing your son is missing is from the moment he stepped into the organization he was the unquestioned leader of the Celtics and the most feared player on the team. Bird is easily top ten in the history of the game.

One important point about the face fracture incident: Bird wasn't "called back" by his team. He waited until the doctor was distracted and then ran out of the room because he knew the team needed him. After the game they had to drill a hole in his face to find the bone that was broken off and causing double vision while he scored about seventeen points in the fourth quarter (with a broken face). Also, his team only won 29 games the year before his rookie season. The Celtics won 61 points the next season when Bird joined the team. He wasn't winning because he played with Hall of Famers. They were more likely Hall of Famers because they played with Bird (obviously they were still awesome, but could show it more easily when Larry Legend draws a quadruple team)

Larry Bird was 6'9" and played small forward. You might also show your son highlights from the 86 season. Keep in mind that the 86 Celtics is one of the best ALL TIME TEAMS. Also keep in mind that Larry Bird had a hurt back by this point in his career, and he was still shutting teams down. This is an era that had the greatest players of all time except for Kobe. Honestly, I don't think any of todays players could be considered goats. What most people don't realize is that without Larry, none of the other Celtics would have been considered Hall of Famers. Larry made the whole team better because he included everyone. The 80's is probably the best era of the NBA ever. It was a tougher and more physical game then. Wusses like Cry Baby Lebron would have been benched due to their inability and unwillingness to play injured. I have to give this one a thumbs down because your son refused to believe what he was seeing and made up stupid excuses to convince himself that he was right and his eyes were wrong. It also gets a thumbs down because you didn't really do a good job explaining Larry's greatness. Sorry LFR Family.

Why would he have any interest in it, when he's completely consumed with stuff that is happening now, just like we were when we were kids. It takes getting a little older to have curiosity about the past to really do deep dives on the millions of things that came before that might be interesting. Danny Ainge would make ppl cry today i really believe that.. The 80s was the most talent rich Era of the NBA. 24 franchises for the majority of the decade compared to over 30 today. Take the top 3 players from 8 teams and distribute them to 24. And this was when free agency was in its infancy. I'm 30 minutes north of Boston, love Larry Legend, and have run the gauntlet goat debate enough times to keep it short and sweet. Larry Bird had 9 healthy seasons in the NBA at its competitive peak. Those 9 seasons hold their own against NBA Legends. LeBron won his 1st title in his 9th season. Bird revolutionized the game more than anyone in history. Want proof? It's given whenever someone takes a 3 across the league. LeBron revolutionized free agency. Do you enjoy 3pt daggers and 4pt plays? What about free agency? If so, do you live in NYC, Miami, or California? One changed the game and elevated the game of his teammates into Hall of Fame Careers. The other changed the league, elevated his team in the off season, with his mates who at minimum were in discussion for the Hall of Fame.
