One thing I learned being absolutely new to snake keeping is that the reptile community can be a brutal place and mess with your mental if you allow it to. You have to deal with your snakes based on what works for you, not what works for Ted who doesn’t have a clue about your relationship with your snakes or Eliza who keeps her snakes in unsanitary conditions but trying to tell you how to keep your husbandry. I have spent many hours researching the keeping of the ball Python so I do whatever works for me, not the reptile community. Keep up the good work man!!!

This summarizes it perfectly I definitely feel the community can be very judgemental to new comers but everyone just needs to be more respectful of each other and realize it's OK to have different opinions

I've had to do the same thing. I've left all discord servers, and have left or at least silenced most of the FB groups. My mental health was really bad earlier this year, and the negativity in the reptile community was unbearable. I thought of leaving the hobby completely at one point. I did rehome a few animals, and with the other changes I've made this year I finally feel better and am enjoying this hobby again.

Not breeding at all, but enjoy my 4 pet snakes. I have no intention on breeding my snakes, just enjoying them like my parrots, or dogs. Just speaking for myself I would much rather see the internet focus on the benefits of owning a PET reptile. I do like to learn about other reptiles but find the focus on breeding to be annoying, probably why I find Clint's reptiles to be the best reptile channel, Snake discovery coming in a close second. Honestly I don't see how breeders can get rich quick without pet owners. Maybe they should start to focus on them.

The internet in general is really good at emphasizing negativity and creating division. To much of it can definitely be a bad thing. And we all need to make sure we are using enough of our time focusing on our personal lives and loved ones, that includes you Brian

I am also focusing on my kids, my animals, my circle of influence with the people I know and education. I think people who have big hearts often feel just like you do! My advice would be to focus on your circle of influence and keep shining your light and positivity to drown out all the negativity ❤

Same page, brother. The community aspect used to be so fun, and now it's exhausting. The last couple years I've been better off focusing on my stuff, my animals, my life - I recommend it! It's a little selfish yeah, but mental health matters. You can still listen to the drama, still have opinions, but it's nice being less engaged with it. I miss a lot about the way things were! Like you said, it's about enjoying these animals in our lives, hanging out with them with friends, appreciating the privilege we have as keepers. I hope this break is good for you! We've all gotta pick our battles. :)

You can obviously keep your friends, still talk to Brian and Justin and others that are your friends, but interact as friends and ignore the community aspect of things. There are plenty of people that focus on the negative, so focus on only positive things and let others sort out the negative.

Always fascinated by the animal kingdom from as far back as my memory permits..... Catching sliders , alligator snappers, Tiger salamanders ,garter snakes , the little toads by the side of the house..bats ..all sorts of bugs...all sorts of fish...Drug my dad to every pet ship we could find ... My first reptile purchase was a gold tegu...angry and defensive ... always wanting to bite...fed him large live rodents...showed off the feedings to my homies...named that dude Smaug...from the Hobbit... This was way back in the mid 80s... I took my passion and created businesses from my love of all creatures great and small... I have been in almost every facet of the herp trade.. Import / Export/ wholesale / Breeder / retail / commercial and residential build outs of terrariums and aquariums...all of it...... I have seen so many changes over my 52 years of life... You live and hopefully you learn from experience. I truly believe the largest problem we face is the ego and human condition.... Technology has brought us closer and made us more intelligent in many ways.... While it also has made us judgements, competitive , and dumber than ever because access to all information is too easy .... I’ve seen you around bro over the past maybe 10 years ... I have seen many avid hobbyist come and go as we age and have families and priorities shift depending of circumstance.... I believe your message to yourself is clear and simple bro.... Everyone remember why you got involved with reptiles et al in the first place.... We are fascinated by them....we are intrigued and they make us feel good... Everyone focus on yourself and being the best hero enthusiast you can be... Quit worrying and bitching about someone else’s dirty water dish and rack system and focus on your own husbandry and personal growth.... No one has ever been perfect and providing again you are living and learning and growing then that means you truly care and are trying to be a better version of yourself . In turn we all make the herp culture RAD AF..... Good solid message bro..... Will say sup to you if I see you out at a show ... You seem like a good authentic genuine dude... One x

Brian I'm right with you on this topic. When it comes to reptiles I wear my heart on my sleeve. In fact to much. That's why I have to take a break from all reptile media for sometimes a month to three months at a time. It really helps. My life is not centered around other people and their content creations. I have been loyal to some that I have followed great periods of time to have them fail me or the reptile hobby or community. That's why I follow a smaller number than most probably. Note I do follow you Brian. It's interesting to me that the ones I have followed for years eventually ended up meeting each other and becoming friends.😊

Dude, it's your friendly German Shepherd owner/dog trainer here. I've been super busy... decided to catch up on videos i missed. So... as someone older than Brian B and Kevin from NERD, a lifetime lover of snakes but never owning one other than the hogs i caught as a kid and played with for a while and let go, im an outsider looking at this. We have the same stuff in the dog show, dog breeding, and dog training world. To add to it, with German Shepherds, because we have American bloodlines and European bloodlines, Showlines and Working lines.....there is always snark. I started showing in 1976. AKC is a political game once you get to the bigger shows. I have Euro lines and longcoats, so i have to show UKC, which is the Brittish Kennel Club, unless i want to do Schutzhund and be in the working dog club. I have 4 Showlines, 1 is a Champion..... and 1 working line. Then there are the sports. Obedience, Scent Work, Agility, Rally, Dock Diving, Fast Cat, Barn Hunt, Herding.... So you guys go to Reptile Shows, we go to dog shows. You travel to far distances for the big shows... we go to Breed Nationals, Westminster, Orlando..... But no matter what, there are clicks, snarky comments, fake hellos, and cold shoulders. On Facebook, there are warnings....dont use this breeder... that breeder....puppy buyers then comment that they own 4 dogs from that breeder... have had dogs live for 14 years with no illnesses, ....it is constant bickering. You have to have tough skin in the dog world. Back in the 50s, i believe it was, competition at dog shows, including Westminster, was poisoning other peoples dogs. There have been cases where dogs have died from someone putting antifreeze in a competing dogs water bowl. So.....welcome to the crazy world of some people having to be winners no matter the cost.

Honestly, I have been avoiding the drama. There is way too many dramatic focused podcasts, especially lately. I had a negative experience where I got a Nido snake from a breeder and even with quarantine it still hit my collection hard(still my mistake). I did not go around spitting venom at the breeder. I worked with them and now I am rebuilding. I however have backed out a lot because it did put a stain on my outlook. But there is so much more negativity and I think sales being down has a lot to do with it. Misery loves company. The podcasters that are sensationalizing the negativity does not help, but I get it. Drama=views and it brings the depressed people that are already angry at the hobby out to focus on something other than their own selves. Good on you Brian, I commend you sir. Aloha

Before a certain person's bad deeds came out weeks ago I defended them because I've been following them since you did a interview ,all the animals looked healthy to me. The hate I got was crazy, a business owner that I've used several times said she would make sure I never bought another animal off the internet and would make sure everyone knew I defended them. All I said was he had done his time and paid his debt so if it still wasn't happening they should be given a chance that's why I don't comment or ask questions anymore to much hate. On a happier note you're one of the most positive and neutral people on here thank you for that I wish you and your family the very best

The online “experts” have no idea that the foundation of today’s hobby was built in the 60s and 70s - with nothing but aquariums and hardware store heat lamps. I can’t count the number of times I have read how “bad” heat lamps are. I don’t even get involved in those discussions anymore. These people have obviously never read The Art of Snake Keeping.

The people that have negative actions in the reptile community are going to be who they are just don't associate with them don't feed into it because it gets unbearable and it puts a lot of unwanted pressure on those who love and cherish the hobby. Just let the negatives be negatives and You just keep doing the positives they will change it just takes time!😊

There is no perfect solution. The best option is to be open to discussion and hope the best keepers thrive while the poor keepers decline. Leaving the door open for the poor keepers to change their ways and improve is a good option. We all have room to learn, and those who can learn from their mistakes deserve forgiveness, I hope.

The arguing is insane. Why are people so angry about how other people are keeping their animals as long as they’re healthy and all needs are met. If your enclosure is half an inch shorter that it’s supposed to be, you will be attacked relentlessly. It’s not that deep, as long as the needs are being met and the animal is healthy then it’s not abuse. People are crazy.

Greed is one major factor involved. Not for all, but for many it's making the absolute most they can. I understand we all have bills to pay and expenses for things we do and enjoy, but it's gotten utterly ridiculous, and many people simply just aren't willing to pay those prices. It's taken a lot of the fun and enjoyment out of the hobby for many people. Especially younger kids, teens, and young adults that can't afford such animals. Many professional breeders frankly need to be brought down a notch and realize they're losing far more money than they're making due to their greed. The market is screaming at them, but it's falling on deaf ears.

Brian I have pulled away from the reptile community a ton over the past two years because of all the negativity before I let it have a negative influence on me and I refuse to change my values because my snakes will always come first.

I personally choose to ignore most of the noise out there. Too many distractions from life and I don’t want to dwell on things that won’t change. There will always be people in every group with their own agenda and others who feel their views on a subject are more nobal than the other guys POV and the result is fighting amongst a group that is supposed to be of like mind. That’s why I’ve always kept my circles small and don’t worry about what other people think, it keeps me hanging on to some of my sanity.

I think you need to treat reptile news like national news: as little as possible. Stay focused on local and those you can influence. Do not get wrapped up in what's going on outside your sphere of influence. We are not built for this information and drama

It seems to have cascaded. Even larger more popular reptile based KZread channels who were once a great base for knowledge, now are drama and sarcasm based. I’ve removed a majority of the reptile channels and pages from all of my social media. I’m not trying to connect with anyone on that level. I attend shows locally and purchase reptiles and anything to do with reptiles locally. I suggest everyone do the same. You’ll thank yourself for it in the long run.

I think a lot of the policing is terrible. It is often done in an "I'm so much better and far superior than you" way. However, I think/wish there were a way or more keepers educating and advocatong for better husbandry, enrichment, enclosures, and overall care in a positive way that doesnt make others feel bad. Because sadly. There is so much outdated, incorrect, sad enclosures, situations, and keeping approaches. When we stop learning and trying to better by our animals, is when we fall. Because they at bare minimum deserve above and beyond in that aspect. I often see many take offense to even gentle advice. I feel a lot of times its ego > animals too. I think the message (most the time) is great but the messenger often is not the right messenger. If we want to create good change, this is the way. Since animals can not talk, they need good voices that can talk and advocate for them.

You have to take care of yourself first or you have nothing left for anything else. It has been stressful in many arenas of life lately. For a long while I had to get all my political news from comics because the biting humor was the only way I could stay informed but be not suicidal. So yeah take a breather and spend it with kids and education. They are the future of both the Reptile Hobby and the World.

I quit participating in the reptile communities/groups a couple years ago. I love it so much more now without all of the drama. The communities are so toxic and they just drain the energy and joy out of you. It's not just the reptile communities. It's all animal keeping communities. Have you ever paid attention to the dog/cat rescue drama? It's the worst. I still go to reptile shows and I still watch several reptile influencers. Why? Because neither of these brings the drama and I can learn things from both. I'm done with the groups and communities for good.

What you have to realize Brian is it you can't control everybody and everything they're always going to be people that do things differently. And you may not agree with the way they do things are the way they handle animals or the way they keep their animals. But sometimes the way they do it makes it work for them. Everybody takes care of animals differently. It's one thing if the animal is being abused and hurt an injured. Then yes that person needs to be called out on it. But again you cannot control everything. It's impossible to control everybody else that everybody else to say. That's kind of how you have to look at it. You don't have that kind of power or that kind of control. To make them do things the way you want them to do or somebody else listen to do.

The focus needs to be on the animals and not the people. People ruin shit. Just ignore the infighting and bull shit and remove yourself from crap you don't like. simple as that. That's why I pulled away from everything except youtube and posting on ig. I don't do anything else. No fb groups really. I don't scroll on fb or anything. I dont look to the internet for reptile focus. I have reptiles for that. Also, your mention of animalcon, I think it's ultimately positve, but it does keep the focus on the people and the 1% of top creators, which can ultimately divide the hobby into two camps; those who think animal con should be about animals and not creators, and those who blindly love whatever happens. I'm not sure what to make of that, but I figured I would share my perspective, if you read this. Anyway, stay away from people and spend more time with your animals. done

If that bugs people I don't care, if you don't like me or how I do things guess what I still don't care. My animals are what's important to me I keep them in prime shape, I keep them clean and healthy. If that's not to some peoples standards hey guess what I don't care. Don't buy from me,don't message me on my social media hell don't even follow me. If you see me at a shoe vending just walk on by I have no time for negative comments or your opinions on how I should be doing things.

@@BlueZombieMorphs Agree, people are working, but many cannot afford to eat a decent meal. We are doing ok because we never went into debt, that means no fancy mansion, no fancy cars, but we owe nobody. Some people just do not have the option to be debt free, and it is getting worse. As a pet owner, that means my snakes are my pets, I am not into thousand dollar dogs, mine are rescues. Not interested in thousand dollar snakes, all 4 of my snakes their most important attribute is they either don't mind being handled, or in the case of my corn snake seems to like it. Maybe if breeders actually focused on selling snakes that PET owners want, and can afford, they would make the same money or more. Many popular snakes among normal people are ones that are not expensive to keep, and that means they are less expensive to breed.

I once was told when I first started breeding. That once you get into the inner circle and see how those idols you've looked up to really do things. You've got to look back on yourself and see what it is you really want to do in this hobby and industry. When I finally got in that inner circle, I was shocked. I only know a fraction of some of the truths, but it's changed my outlook on everything. The community was always toxic, but it's gotten worse. With morphmarket jumping on the reptile community police kick. Then you have newb keepers who don't know any better jumping on the same band wagon. I'm not supportive of what Samson did by no means. But you've got a bunch of inexperienced keepers/ breeders either jumping down each other's throats. Or joining a bandwagon supporting breeders that have a long history of selling bad animals. But those usark contributions make everything better. So, like you said... I'm stepping back and just doing my thing. I'll keep breeding and raising up boas. Not like I was, but I'll still make some just to support my hobby throughout the year. The market will come back, it always has. It's just about not flooding the market and making it crash even more right now. Something, get rich quick covid breeders aren't understanding. Disclaimer: I'm a vet and pretty blunt. So my wording used probably comes off as negative, even though I try to not be. It's just how my brain is wired I guess. So apologies for any negative vibes.
