My shocking realization about backpacking

Спорт

After all these years of backpacking, I've come to realize I was wrong about a lot of things. So, in this video, I'm going to list out all the ways I was wrong about backpacking and what I think about it now.

Nature doesn't care about our goals, objectives, intentions, or self-given labels like thru-hiker. When we go into the back country, it's on Nature's terms, not ours. Therefore, we need qualities like flexibility and resilience. And those are qualities we can always keep refining and expanding.

I'm in Oregon and beginning to backpack hunt for a number of reasons. 1. Getting away from roads. 2. More mobility while hunting if I have the option to drive to different areas and spend a few days there, rather than commit to one area. 3. When we locate game we can stay focused on them without having to return the next day after going back to camp. 4. I feel we've opened up many areas that we never considered before. 5. I feel closer to nature and get more of an experience than all my past archery seasons.

Awesome take aways bro. The joy of backpacking is addicting. The vibe of nature is beyond extraordinary. Your thoughts and realisations rocks! Goodjob! I have a newly acquired land that I am still developing for a campsite ground located on the top of the mountain. Just built a log cabin. I enjoy every moment whenever I stay there.

In Australia we call it bushwalking. And sometimes you bushwalk with a day pack or multi day pack and sometimes you just walk without a pack. It all depends on where you are going and how long the walk takes. The important thing is to get out there in the bush.

Whenever I meet foreigners backpacking in my country (Norway), often Dutch people for some reason, they have these grandiose plans to cross the entire map in a few days; up at 6am, hike all day, go to sleep, rinse repeat. No time to actually stop, sit still and enjoy it. Like it's important to see as many trees as possible. All the package tours to Norwegian national parks being sold in Germany and Netherlands are like that.

I’d love to see more content created around actually enjoying an experience rather than trying to show off how long one can hike or how epic a hike can be. Like you said, “stop, sit still and enjoy it.”

What a great video, like all of your videos I've watched so far. I've been on my journey for over thirty years and counting. It started as a way to fish the best water, but before long I stopped taking my rod. Then it was about physical challenge. Next personal growth. Then spiritual development. Now it's simply about appreciating nature, period. At age 60 after two back surgeries everything hurts, but a 1-2 mile hike is all it takes to get away from everyone and be alone in the backcountry. Thank you for your great work.

Thanks for sharing your story!!!! I really appreciate how you have allowed backpacking to develop your OWN self and that you’re willing to let it do that. Thanks for the kind words!

Backpacking was so important to my wife and I before we were married and had kids. Until the kids get a little older it’s not something we can really do together anymore. I miss that shared experience with her and wish we had some more support. BUT now I’ve discovered the joys of overlanding (shhhhhh!don’t call it car camping) which I can do with my family and now that I’m getting into hunting I’m discovering a whole new dimension to backpacking. Wife does not hunt and neither do any of my friends so solo backpack hunting it is! New skills, new dimensions. Onward!

haha! I've said the SAME thing about overlanding before...so funny! Good on you for finding new ways to enjoy an experience in the outdoors. I'm in the same boat with little ones and fully anticipate coming full circle one day. Skills!

Huh, I felt the other way around. I embarked on my first thru hike with 3 water filters and 2 pairs of jeans. After the AT (and a few trips after) I somehow thought I've figured it out. I thought there was one good way to do things. Oh and boots...? There's no reason to hike in boots. They're just for people that hadn't seen the light yet. I looked at it as a sign of lack of experience. Turns out I was right, it was a sign of a lack of experience..my own. Gear matters, but sorta doesn't. I had to be humbled by new experiences before I realized my short-sightedness. And you'd think a thru-hike would open your mind, not close it. I think it was difficult to not feel proud after all the pain I went through. As if it somehow graduated me to a new class. Title: Thru-hiker...pffft. Now that sounds like Adult vs. Child to me. The line is only there if you draw it. I knew a guy who quit 100 miles before the finish line because of work. At least he wasn't as proud as I was to think that a title matters more than the experience. He's just as much of a thru hiker as I am. Hike your own hike people! Thanks Emory
