Blows my mind that people do not understand all "Free Shipping" means is that you include the shipping into the price so therefore you are not losing money like so many believe. Free shipping seems to increase sells and the only money you lose is the money people are overcharging people to ship their item. Meaning the customer pays $15 to ship and it only cost you $10 to ship so now you pocket an extra $5.

Free shipping has never worked out for me, personally. When I figured in the costs and raise the selling price, all that did was increase the amount of lowball offers, and if I decided not to allow offers, then my prices sat higher than others that have the LOWER PRICE (plus shipping). And then there is physical media, which, granted, isn't a huge margin market to begin with, but folks are selling these at seemingly a loss. $5 free shipping is a loss after fees and supplies, unless someone is paying you to sell it. But, it wouldn't surprise me that some sellers are willing to take a loss on the individual penny-ante items.

Love it Dave, reminds me of when I used to work for a Sporting Goods company and we locked up all the Knives (same reason they could be a weapon), but we had machetes just hanging on the wall in bulk for any customer to grab. My guess is the CEO of that Sporting Goods company went to go work for Mercari lol. Have a great day, I'm going to go buy Scissors off Mercari.

I switched to flate rate shipping last year, and made a world of difference. I use a tiered system starting at $5.95 - $7.95 for anything less than a pound. Goes up from there based on size and weight. Golf irons, putters and woods are $15.95 and $24.95 for drivers. Its ok to make money on the shipping.

I use the setting to give the commercial rate to customers. BUT I also add a handling fee to it to cover the expense of the shipping supplies. It allows for flexibility on my side with costs, while also giving the buyers a lower rate that is better and more enticing than retail. I'm usually getting a little back.

I've been knocking down the weight on packages when listing. You still make a little to cover fees-on-shipping, but it charges the customer less to make your listing more appealing. Sale today on a 2lb package: Had listed for 1lb, $8.40 shipping paid. Cost me $7.40ish to ship the 2 pound package.

I don't know if eBay has this, but on Pirate Ship, I was able to take a look at my shipping costs over the year and it allowed me to setup a rough pricing strategy for flat-rate shipping. For most items, charging $5.99 - $9.99 shipping depending on the size/weight of the object is the way to go for me and as of right now, my average shipping cost within pirate ship for all items I've shipped is sitting at $7.98. It's pretty rare that I overpay for shipping. I actually just looked at my total charged for shipping vs my total shipping costs from Pirate Ship and I overcharged by about 10% on shipping by doing this.

I see my buying addiction in you Dave. I have learned to source items that I would keep for myself if I eventually decide to keep the item. And I don't source much clothes but when I do, I buy what I would wear in case I wind up keeping it or it just wouldn't sell for whatever reason. As for the knives, I saw you looking at them and thought it would be too risky to sell them on eBay. One of the "other" platforms has no problems with people listing weapons of mass destruction such as a "pocket knife" LOL

Yes Dave, the best way to combat the high shipping cost is too pass the ebay saving on too the buyer. As long as you put in correct weight and put dimensions in correctly or at 12x12x12 to start (because ebay now has cubic rates) it will never under charge the buyer. I did it for a year and never was under charged. I actually switched back here recently tho and I am just discounting the standard rated by 15% because I like to try to get the fees on the shipping covered at well. Working ok so far but it has not been a full week yet since this change.

I've been using the way you eventually set up (pass savings to customer) and it works great but you absolutely need to get your weight and measurements correct when listing which can be tricky when you don't know what box you're going to use. Just overestimate and should be fine. Also you can add a surcharge to all prices (I have mine set at 50 cents) to cover cost of box/bag/packing.

  • @gemflipper

I use a flat weight system for shipping. Every item kind of falls into a certain weight category for me. I believe the reason why buyers may be overpaying for shipping is because of dimensions. So I don't really have this problem because over the years I've come to the realization that all the items I pick up fit into certain size boxes so those are the only boxes I have. There is the occasional one-off and I will shape a box to size. For the most part my buyers will pay up to $3 more for shipping but that's because of my flat weight system. We are always learning I didn't even know there was an option to change how buyers are charged for shipping be it discounted or standard and I've been doing this for 25 years.

I made about $500 on them all but for some reason I feel the blade length might be your problem. I might be totally wrong too. I like thrift stores but the reason why is I live in an odd area where a lot of rich folks have second homes. The rest of the population is poor and the majority of things I have found at yard sales are so low value that they are not worth reselling. My thrift stores get a lot from the second home people and they make me money.

Both items were slightly over a pound, and each item cost me under $10 to ship. That has to have a negative effect on sales. Flat rate is a waste, you don't get the benefit of calculated or free shipping. For free shipping when you list something and are going off comps and see the item is selling for about $50 total that is the price you have to meet, no matter how you go about shipping. I have everything listed with either GA or Media and that allows me to pick whatever service I want when I go to ship because I will be choosing an equal service (UPS, Fedex) or superior service (priority).

I think in 2024 people assume they will pay shipping for an item, especially if not from traditional store ( free shipping with orders of $$$ or more) I do flat rate and it works pretty well. But as a shopper I will do the math/ and or go with free shipping. At least start with 1 of 1 listing and command price + ship. More saturated items could do better with free shipping if people are clicking fast.

But you have to be careful if you use media rates because we pay retail for those also so I don't discount those. I set up media as flat rate. I just don't like flat rate for ground advantage or priority. I don't think it's fair to your customers who live closer to you. As for your bear lady, if she did manage to cause you to take it down I would put it on What Not and then tell her since she didn't want you to sell it on Ebay, you sold it on another platform at auction and it only brought (a low amount dollar). She needs to chill. I'm an artist and have sold quite a bit of my work. But once I've sold it, it's no longer my business what someone does with it. Why don’t you test your shipping theory by using the eBay shipping calculator or USPS shipping calculator or Pirate Ship. Instead of guessing. By the way it costs me the same thing 1lb or less it cost $7.80 to ship Ground Advantage and I’m in NJ

Bear lady isn't the customer, the should not side with her. My mother bludgeoned someone with a lamp. A 13 yo I watch has a golf club in her room. I have a baseball bat in my living room. Flea markets you get caught up in the atmosphere and buy, I have that problem at some estate sales too.

I'd tell the artist to go ahead and make an offer and she can then Resell with the photos worthy of her art for the price she feels fit.

A few months ago I got a message from ebay saying they removed my listing because it was racist/vulgar etc, I thought "OMG, what did I post" NEVER would I post anything like that. To my surprise it was a DR SUESS book of all things, completely stupid but I can list a Playboy book etc and they're fine LOL

Yard sales people just want that stuff gone so they will probably take less for stuff. Flea markets that's a lot of people's business can probably have to pay to set up so they charge more and probably don't wanna go down on price unless they need it sold badly

Anything can be used as a weapon...even paper. I think they were probably basing it on blade length...as some states make it illegal to carry a switchblade that is past 3 fingers long. I hope you find a workaround for the bear lady. She must be really lonely to make her life mission to harass peeps over first impressions of "her" bear.

  • @karrief5620
    @karrief56206 ай бұрын

The bear lady just needs to get over the fact that her bear is being sold with photos that aren't to her liking. Otherwise people like Xavier Roberts cabbage patch inventors family who own rights to them, could harass every seller with dodgy cabbage pictures. Surely that's just not reasonable.

eBay does not always side with the buyer. If you are a Top Rated Seller you only have to ever offer back 50% of the refund. eBay aways takes care of their top rated sellers and will side with you as a seller and protect you from things outside of your control. If you made sure you became one Dave you would save money on shipping get more of a boost in listings visibility and conversion and have 100 % feedback.

Does that 50% refund still apply even if the buyer selects it's broken, doesn't match the description, or some other reason that puts fault on the seller?
