My sawdust exploded* (and I got footage!)

*The explosion was not in my shop, and it was intentional. Is sawdust a hazard? YES, the SDS says it is an irritant, a carcinogen, flammable and explosive. In this video, I show you how to make it explode so you can avoid explosions in the shop. There are plenty of videos about flammable liquids and electricity. This video addresses the fire dangers associated with dust. If you have a lot of sawdust or a CNC in your shop you need to watch this. If you love fire and explosions, this video is also for you.

3:40 Wow!! That’s what I came here for. Literally searched “sawdust explosion demonstration” after watching USCSB’s excellent “Combustible Dust: An Insidious Hazard” (well worth watching) and this came up like 5th result. ✅

The real issue is in the event of a small, sawdust fire. You’re going to get a concussion, and that will knock more sawdust off of rafters or equipment, which within a fraction of a second will also add to the fuel of the sawdust fire, this will create a second concussion. That’s even larger, and can knock sawdust out of corners from every nook and cranny that might have been accumulating for years resulting in a catastrophic explosion that can literally blow up a building. There are OSHA videos about this.

I recommend the excellent USCSB (US Chemical Safety Board) video “Combustible Dust: An Insidious Hazard” free on KZread. It covers 5 brutal case studies.

Great video. Thanks for posting it... I've had "order fire extinguisher" on my to do list since I started working in my new shop in February. Time to pull the trigger.

so your point is well taken and thanks for the tips, and stay safe. But, some basic dust collection will mitigate 90% of this. Your view of the CNC spewing sawdust 'all over you shop' seems like it can easily be avoided. Not meant to flame, but come on man..

I would bet that most hazards (even the minor) can easily be avoided. I considered (and may still) trying to use sawdust and a leaf blower to create a flamethrower, not that this would do much more than show that it can be done and that it would be awesome. I expected to catch some heat from this one, I figured I didn't need to add more fuel to the fire.😉
