My S65 powered E30 BMW M3 - Problems on the Dyno
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
It was supposed to be a quick checkover of my S65 powered E30 BMW M3 on the dyno. It didn't go exactly to plan...

Probably the most iconic modern E30 M3 on t'internet. Love this car - nice work gents.
Felt like Phill wasn't particularly happy with the power, even after the last test run. And with all my parasocial capabilities i can tell its not going to stay like that 😂😂
Tom is an absolute legend. Other than my actual engine builder he is the only guy to touch my car. He will be up front and honest with you from the start, definitely knows what he is talking about and his previous projects and customers speaks volumes. 10/10
@21:28 Jay knows. spoken like a true dad
The honk from that air box is savage! 😅
Just binged watched this build series over the last few days. Amazing.
Glad to see this back at it and grats on getting the issues worked out!
Fuarkkkk this thing sounds good. It sounds very reminiscent of the V8 Supercars down here in Aus. Which in my opinion is one of the best sounds 8 cylinders can make. Far and away the best E30 in existence IMO.
The M3 and 911 shot ❤
That induction noise though! 😍
Every time I see this car and more importantly, hear it in motion is incredible the engineering, complexity and precision. Phill is really living that DTM touring car ownership dream we've all had XD
I love how absolutely race car the interior is. Awesome car guys
That induction sound at 06:44!!!
I have an s65 e46 that also made 360whp on the dyno. Im convinced that these engines need an X-pipe to actually breathe and produce the power they were designed to make.

Yeah all the asses in profile pics and saying some weird stuff. Don't really know what they achieve.
One, I adore this E30, two, what are your thoughts on adding especially some Wind Splitters to the top of the front "wings"(fenders! I'm American lol) and potentially, potentially, a Taifun Grille and headlight combo, potentially of course, I know the splitters would look dope for sure 👌 I'd literally street drive this thing....still looking for a reasonably priced one to swap a B58/S58 into, the things never come up for sale in the US, if they do, they're convertibles or expensive AF
Dunno if there’s been a camera or cameraman upgrade but she looks a million bucks in this clip. Good grief. What a car!

Good old Iphone.
The you choke the lambda sensors with soot since it was running rich? Careful use of a blowtorch burns that off & they are fine again
I’ll lend you my e90 m3 to do a comparison, it’s still running your old Cup2s and should be comparable in terms of engine setup for power.
Was that running in the 70's for coolant temp 🤔 that super cool how are your temp that low or is it the dyno fans?
@4:10 would have never guessed it was running super rich with those flames out of the exhaust on the video's intro 🤣🤣 hope you don't lean it out enough to kill the flames!!
@admlucius7298

If it’s an eddy current dyno (creates load via coils) vs rotational mass (created load based on centrifugal force from weight of the roller) the difference can be massive. Euro dynos are primarily the latter which read higher. This may be the reason for your low numbers. 🤷🏽♂️
Probably nothing but at 6.29 the black hose connecting the 2 banks under the eventuri intake is collapsed at idol?
@driftworks

It’s just a balance pipe, but does need a metal connector in the middle.
Did 5 min of google´ing and it sound about right, a stock BMW E92 M3 V8 gets around 340-350whp.
My E92 made 439 (fly) at Surrey RR 👍🏻
Sounds like a heart breaker Mustang dyno
Do you use twisted wiring for all the sensors?

You didn't chuck the higher ratio rear end into it for Goodwood?

It's way higher ratio than I want already. It's in Nurburgring spec at the moment so is geared to about 185mph if I remember correctly.
6:30 why is that rubber hose that connects both sides of throtle body's so squished... Is that normal because of a vacuum or...

Yeah it’s vacuum. We noticed it too. It’s only a balance pipe, but could do with a solid connector in the middle.

Tom is a pro mapper...
@ValladolidArde
Ай бұрын
@@holdawayt Hi, I have worded this incorrectly, dont mean to diss Tom or his team. I was referring to a mapper with high end motorsport experience and lots of grey hair, WRC, F1 etc. Sometimes these hyper complex ecu's like the syvecs require HUGE experience to fully and quickly exploit the massive array of options and motorsport focused strategies they offer. Tom says in this video he has never worked with one. Syvecs is a mature product of the life racing ecu range, they are incredibly complex. And I dont mean to say that Tom can't figure it out, I'm sure the chap is a star and is well suited to the task with the right amount of time at hand, It's just that at this point of the build with so many bumps and issues when the car has gotten to a point that it´s ultra sophisticated It might be a good idea to talk to people that can sort out an ecu issue in 1hr. I'm a powertrain development engineer myself,developed and built IRC and WRC engines... I can map link, aems, omex, gems.... But I would never dare to touch a lemans works level ecu like syvecs, prodrive or life racing, a small error could cost me a 35k engine or worse, I call Terry and he always surprises my with his vast expertise, the man is a genius. I was only trying to help, by no means am I trying to diss Tom who seems like a superb bloke and did his best here despite confronting a new product and wire issues. Kind regards
370whp or engine hp? If whp, that sounds pretty good. If not whp, then definitely a little low.

At the Flywheel. If it was wheel I'd be very happy.
Who built that chassis originally?
@driftworks
Ай бұрын
No idea unfortunately. Not Prodrive though. It was in a very rough way when the previous owner found it I think.
Why go to a mapper with zero experience on the ecu you are using?
@driftworks
Ай бұрын
Because we weren’t supposed to be mapping it. It was already mapped. This was supposed to just be a couple of pulls to check it’s not running lean.
I don't want an older car again, but this makes me want an e30 so bad. They look so cool, especially on 18s and custom bodywork. I hate seeing them on 14-16s.

Gale banks would laugh at this dyno setup. Fan in front is made for RC cars, and you always dyno as car goes down the road, which means closed bonnet. 370hp at the crank seems right for the S65, the 420hp claimed was always way over. When they first came out they all dynoed around 360-380hp.
For a couple of thousand pounds wiring harness id expect it to be perfect . Not wired from the internet .
Enough of that, show us the del sol on the ramp

I’ve never had a single issue with the S65 so I’m not sure why you think I’d need to swap it. The engine is as perfectly matched to the chassis as you can get IMO. I like the Coyote engine, but it won’t be going anywhere near this car.

@@driftworks the s65 it’s well known for bad things in everything, I know sounds badass and revs high and it’s a BMW motor, but is not a good v8… not reliable even with good mantenience, problems with main bearings, compression, hp numbers and very expensive to do anything on it, I love the e30 and I love the project but I don’t see it very often at the track…it’s hard to hear but you won’t have those problems with any other v8s that are in the market.

I wholeheartedly disagree. The S65 is one of the best V8 engines to ever come in a road car. Most of the stuff regarding reliability is over dramatised internet BS. The fact that this engine exists is a testement to the final years of the real BMW M devision ,before the era of turbo nonsence came about. There is literally no other engine that I'd rather have in this car. It has never let me down, and there isn't a more perfect balance of performance, weight, reliability and sound for this chassis IMO. The reason you've not seen it at the track is because I like building and messing with cars as much as I do driving them. The car has been off track for 9 months because I changed stuff, not because it's broken.
Every time you turn on this e30 I fell more and more in love with it despite the struggles. It run so good on track, cheff kiss!🤌
