My Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 - 1 Year Owning and Riding

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today we are diving into my thoughts on my Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 after 1 year owning and riding it. Just general thought and discussion along with some footage riding the Continental GT 650 on country roads. Spoiler alert I still love my Royal Enfield 650 GT, but I will cover general likes and dislikes, and overall Royal Enfield 650 Twin quality so far.

For me it's all about the styling of the Continental GT 650. Could have bought just about any bike on the market. Could have got more hp , better fit and finish, lower maintenance schedule. But I love the styling and always get compliments from the curious everywhere I go . Bike being reliable and a joy to ride are icing on the cake.

Not surprised. Saw a review video in which man-on-the-street questions were being asked about the perceived value, and people CONSISTENTLY (and greatly) overestimated the price-point. Aside from the styling, I think that things like the welds and the PAINT JOB make these things look even more-impressive, especially considering the price. Well, they've been building them "forever," in India, AND the acquisition of tech know-how, as with RE's purchase of Harris Performance seems to have been a wise investment. And, if they were going-to add a "frill," to a no-frills bike, ABS as a standard feature is a good place to start. As for the tires, I've heard that Michelins have been a worthwhile upgrade, when replacement-time rolls-around. ALSO, you can get Brembo PADS to replace the existing pads, once those wear-out.

5 months and 5,500 miles on my 2020 650INT. I have two 2012 Triumphs to compare the R.E. to. Wheel widths are identical, as are stock tire cross-sections. I put 110/90 front and 140/70 rear tires on my Bonneville, it cured my center-stand scrape problem on left handers; will do the exact same tire size swap on my R.E., already have the tires... A 140/70 rear "gears up" by two percent, a 150/70 by four percent. Putting a 110/90 on the front will reclaim (or correct) the odometer optimism (driven by front wheel) that is roughly three percent. I am 70, 6'4" tall and 220lbs and would recommend the R.E. 650 to-the-masses. Nary a problem other than front brake disc intermittent squealing which has healed itself. Have used 75 gallons for an average of 72+ mpg; range is incredible. Very happy with my 650. Update: April 26, 2022 bike is just now at 24,000 miles, I have two of the S&S 750cc big bore kits and just finishing the "first one" of 2 that I have planned. Also added a full stainless-steel exhaust (TEC), bike weighs 429 pounds full of fuel.

The only real complaints I have seen on the Royal Enfield forums, are the relays. People complain that they are packed with way to much dielectric grease from the factory, which supposedly causes starting issues and stalling. I only have 120 miles on the clock so far, so my Continental isn't broke in yet. I love the position of the foot pegs, just the right amount rearward position for my height of five nine. I am 66 years old and wanted a classic styled cafe racer. I am coming off a 2012 KLR-650 that I owned for ten years brand new. This is my thirteenth motorcycle. I enjoy the linear power that this twin produces, more than adequate for my needs and wants. I plan on keeping this bike stock, and keeping the maintenance up to date. Royal Enfield's seem to have a loyal fan base in the world, and really are amazing motorcycles. I plan on riding into my seventies, as I started riding and racing motorcycles when I was thirteen years old. I always wanted a Triumph or MV-Augusta growing up, but the British styled Royal Enfield twins really do impress me, inexpensive, easy to work on, joy of ownership a basic no frills motorcycle. Top of the day to you my friend! 🏁🏁

(Used to ride a Matchless CSR cafe racer but my spine was stronger then ) Have to agree totally on the GTs semi rear sets they look about 6 inchs to far forward at least and id have to drop the clip ons down to the bottom yolk or get proper ones without the up sets. What ever one I settle on its just got to be the all chrome tank version and fitted with reverse cone meggers to get that 60s roar back in my ears. Happy tarmac guys

1 year in and 18k Miles (29k Km)down and i still love this bike despite its low power. I use it every day for commuting and it's served me well so far. Have had a few problems, had to have a new rectifier, and my front brakes have started to bind (There's a Factory recall here in the UK for that problem) The switch gear are a bit intermittent, but it is kept outside so its no surprise due to the quality of them. My main gripe is the size of the tank, i would love to have a 16 litre plus size, especially as filling it to the brim is a bit of a pain... It would just allow me a greater range of riding without having to worry about where the next garage is. I May get myself a custom tank made, but even with these little niggles its still one of my favorite bikes in the garage.

I also had to make an adjustment or two with the brakes and the seat due to the road conditions i ride on to. If the bike is parked in a shaded garage then you would not have corrosion issues for atleast a decade if not then can't say. Every bike goes through normal wear and tear so it will. Try changing your sprocket. either front or back in number of teeth. This can get you a little more on top end speed. if that's what you are aiming for. The only downside of sprocket change is you may give up performance in low and mid range. So we are kind of limited to the performance of our stock bikes, but they were designed from the factory to perform adequately as an overall package. Many of us would like to do a lot of the servicing ourselves since the 650s seem reasonably straight-forward, but, personally, I'd love to see someone who definitely knows what they're doing go through the process. Granted, Stuart Fillingham has done this on his channel, but it's always nice to see something done by two different people. Anyway, just a thought.

You can always change the front sprocket to one tooth more to lower the RPM's at highway speeds without losing too much of its power. As far as the foot pegs, I think RE was afraid they might turn off riders if the pegs were any further back or higher. The Continental GT is a Cafe racer, not a sport bike. So I think RE did right with the pegs. The top gear could be higher, but changing the front sprocket would be a cure to your RPM problems.

Vibration is almost non existent. I wouldn't want less vibration than this! It's just enough to let you know you are riding a motorbike. 4 to 5 hour rides no problem. The standard seat is not overly comfortable. I am not well padded and felt uncomfortable after 2 1/2 hours. The touring comfort seat is good and solved the problem for around £100. Now more comfortable than my 1200 trophy.

We don't get rust problems here in Western Australia unless you live right on the coast with the salt air. WE don't get ice so no salting the roads. Have a look at TEC aftermarket footpegs they may solve your problem. I fitted mine and you can set them in a wide variety of positions. They also make a wide range of products for the interceptor.

Hi Alex, first of all I want to congratulate you on such a to the point video regarding your bike. So many of these reviews center around some stupid music and a guy riding along and talking about how wonderful it is. You covered all the bases very very well. I do have a question, one of the negative issues some reviewers have mentioned regarding the 650 twin engine has been the throttle mapping issues at low RPMs. This is especially troublesome on Japanese bikes as well as triumphs I understand. I'm referring to of course snatching type acceleration at low RPMs as well as hard deceleration at low RPMs. Effectively ruining that nice smooth feeling we all want. You did not mention anything about that. Is that because your bike does not suffer that?

I bought also the Royal gt 650 and I agree that this is a very good bike for beginners but also for those who love the cafe racer style and this bike is one of the most popular models this year I can agree that when I bought it I had to go to another city to buy it as many fans of the classic two cilinder motorcycles have bought them out. This style is a work of art and history, I can totally agree that it lacks more final gears but basically this bike is something else it is good and different from modern models, not all riders will be able to get used to a few drawbacks, but this is not it is very important because the disadvantages are insignificant and are mainly solved by simple costomization. My opinion is a nice copy in order to enjoy life while driving it may many of you have same feeling.

I checked this bike out when it first debuted. I thought it felt too heavy and the reach to the bars too extreme (I prefer the Interceptor's ergos). Also, these bikes don't have a gear indicator - can't go back to a bike without one. But for the money, it's great value. Glad to hear it's been reliable.

It seems like you can address both of those complaints as soon as the aftermarket catches up to your bike. After market rear sets, and either a bigger front sproket (in number of teeth), or a smaller rear sprocket in number of teeth for your highway RPM issue. I own a Honda Hawk gt and I would also like to lower my highway cruising RPM rate.

You might try a countershaft sprocket with one more tooth. It's a cheap experiment. I went up one tooth on the countershaft and down one tooth on the rear sprocket on my son's Thruxton. Now the bike lives in the fat part of the powerband. It's so sweet

But if I type electrical issues in Int 650 there are a ton of videos where users going through major issues. Bike turning off while riding seems to be a big safety issue, Regulator rectifier problem, all 4 rectifier problem, rectifier cable problem, battery problem, flashing error lights on the dial, ecu error codes etc... etc... Two questions, how many miles exactly on your GT650 and how many times did you adjust the valves ? The dealership suggests valve adjustment ( check) at 1St 600 mile check up., Would a new sprocket help the situation at highway speeds ? ? When I test drove the INT 650, I felt that the foot pegs on it were poorly placed and I am also 5 feet nine and 160 pounds.. Footpegs are easily replaced.

  • @AlexSimmons11c

    @AlexSimmons11c

I'm somewhere around 5700 miles now, I have checked the valves twice but they have not needed any adjustment so far. A sprocket could help get those RPM down at highway speed, but would also hinder the acceleration in the lower gears, so I will live with it the way it is :-)

In Sweden the RE is almost the price as the XSR 700 2022. The price is no longer a selling point. The RE is more retro than the XSR but you get som much more with the Yamaha in terms off power (75 hp vs 48hp) for only 500 euro more.
