Hey I work in a tissue culture lab. We used a different mother plant! And I can say I have never heard of that! But I disagree with the root rot, they rot so much faster than other plants in the lab. Also I think it's a bit if once it has root rot your fighting it forever. I had a big one I kept it alive for a year but was always fighting with root rot in away I never had to before. I think they are fine and hardy as long as they don't get root rot.

I can totally concede that thai cons in general get root rot more than a green one. BUT I'm referring to the 'v2 batch' supposedly having more problems is fake and they have always had issues since thai con came into existence

I’ve just watched this video for the third time. I know it has been very controversial and caused some drama, but I find it very interesting. You’ve gotten the conversation going. You admit that you don’t know everything and could be wrong.You admit that these are theories. I think it’s been a healthy source of discourse. I got a thai con cutting with 4 BIG leaves (fenestrations+holes) for 80 bucks a few weeks ago, I know they will get even cheaper soon. I was a bit worried about the root rot myths too but this makes so much more sense, I really try to treat it like any other plant and it's been doing great! Can't wait to find them for cheaper in normal plant stores

I purchased 2 larger plants and the first rotted immediately, the second is on its way out. Ironically, the baby I received bare root lost most of its leaves but is bouncing back 😂 Originally, I heard the thais reputation was basically indestructible, so having one larger plant rot on me was weird. Now having the second going south, idk 😅

I came over from the other channel that talked about this channel because you talked about their channel. If you know, you know. All I want to say is that I love both of your channels, so I am not here to take sides, but I lost a Thai because I moved it from PON to cocopeat after the roots went bonkers and that was within one week even though it was outside in shade where the other Monsteras are thriving. I am now fighting with another Thai, even after bottom watering. The original roots and soil fell of, and one leaf rotted. Thankfully the other roots which appears to be the main root was not rotted, so I had to repot to an even extra chunkier mix to keep it. The thing was putting out a new leaf and I had to disturb it. The Thai constellations is absolutely prone to rot. You cost the man money by your video, but I hope you two can shake on it. I will do what you said and not water as often. Thanks for that tip.

I have been doing some delving into Pythium, and its pretty much what is behind "overwatering", when a plant just collapses and the soil stays sopping wet, basically you are asking for Pythium with overly wet soil. Apparently Pythium doesn't like pine, so I think I might be trying pine mulch with my Peperomia because that is where I usually get it. Would be interesting to find out if mixing pine for Thai Cons worked. The other application mentioned was using a fungicide in the soil, even though Pythium isn't technically a fungus it would remove it until it returned. From what I could tell you can't really eradicate Pythium, its everywhere.

@@TechplantChannel I put it in PON and the roots went nuts, I moved them to a bigger pot and used cocopeat and other things to make the media chunky and within a weak it rotted. I was told to not put it in PON because the roots grown in lighter and any other media may be too heavy. If I ever put it in PON it will stay there but I want it in something more natural. NVM again will I do what I did.

its funny you say that, because there were some journals I read where the pythium was almost beneficial with its presence. also this reminds me of a snake collector who built immunity to venom through repeated exposure. This idea of root rot exposure sounds interesting and im wondering what we can do to build a stronger more resilient plant!

Make this clear... Thai Constellation root rot issue is American centric issue not sure other part of the world has issue. In Australia we get so much propagation FB market place now awash with ppl selling them off...

an update drops in like 45min

When ever I sell cuttings of my monsteras of any type ( mostly albos) I ask if they are growing a standard monstera and stress them to treat it the same! no humidity dome no special dirt just airy soil is send it in. pretty white streaks does not change the care of the plant! I totally agree people love their plants to death, so many monsteras suffering in in those IKEA cabinets.

Great video. I found with my smaller Thai that a good chunky mix, terracotta pot and a heat mat have done wonders. Since owning it for a few months, it has gotten two new leaves. Still fairly small but is doing wonderful. And I bought it for the low low price of $79

Becareful with the heat mat. When I first got my Thai 2019 I was propping it in heavy glass an water on top of a heat mat an kept getting root rot. As soon I removed it from the heat mat no more issues. Make sure the soil isn’t getting to warm. 💚

I literally read the same papers as he did. What facts did he drop? That thais get root rot more often than tortum? When did I ever compare v2 thais to anything other than v1 thais? If you read the papers you will quickly see that they are either unrelated to my arguments or only support his anecdotal 'theory' that a mother plant was so badly infected with pythium that it migrated deep into the tissue and ALL 'v2' thai cons come from a single lab that used the infected mother and every single plant suffers from genetic degradation. Does that make any sense to you? Given there are tons of labs producing thai cons from numerous mother plants from all different iterations(v1 v2 v3 v34 v46 ect..) So simultaneously across the world all labs made the exact same mistake with the exact same mother plant? His other source about some other plant species where different cultivars exhibit differences in pythium infections has very little to do with a thai con compared to a thai con. I've had people comming to me for thais with root rot for years and people losing them to root rot for years. Like 5 different times I suggest that thr viewer goes and reads these papers. What does he suggest 'that's not fun' then flashes some quotes from scientific journals that only perpetuate what I've stated in this comment that he literally says he just thinks is causing it....

I feel called out on for switching substrate when there's an "issue". Lmao. Got a monstera albo cutting about a month and a half ago and it hasn't done anything in water. It lost a woody ariel root, luckily it still has another one, but still has yet to root. Finally decided to not mess with it and just let it do its thing in moist perlite/stratum mix.

I agree with many points here but I don't think you can generalize like that. Some plants will not get to the couple of dollars level, ever. They might get cheaper than current prices, sure. Like a darthvaderiana... this freaking plant is so difficult... so far I've only seen it going up in price even though it is rather popular and you'd think someone would be mass producing it by now. Or Jodies Silver... no one has it for sale atm, and I've seen listings for $100 10 years ago. The most recent plant offered I've seen was one node for $4k. There are some plants that keep their value for a bit longer than others ;)

Orange lake nursery has small Thais for $40 and tc plantlets for $20 so I'd say that's cheap in my eyes.

Hope the negative and over sensitive enthusiasts arent crying their salty tears over their plants because salty tears cause Root Rot! I've seen it all really. It's been a phrase going around since the beginning of the aroid craze. There was even an instance in the obliqua group where they tried to ban selling to keep the prices from dropping to fast lmaoooo

75 buck? Bro come to PPUSA they'll hook you up on something with a lot of color for less than $50. These have gotten very very affordable Also, you have it in a greenhouse. Plant tend to thrive no matter what in a greenhouse situation. Most of the root rot issue is just bad soil mix or it's too compact.

I have watched a KZreadr talk about the v1 and v2 thing and I’ve watched this vid and obviously as someone who has 5 plants I have no real opinion other than I just purchased a Thai con on offer and I’m like 😬 Think I’m gonna buy a water meter I can stick into my plant to test the dryness level because I can be prone to over watering.

I'd belive you if I didn't go through 7 thais that I got for my birthday that died after 1 watering in the middle of an Australian summer. The only way I've kept them alive is by going full hydro. It was quite devastating with how susceptible these plants are to problems in general. Honestly it's when plants leave TC when the issues arise. There is a risk that because they're not exposed to germs that any pathogens that are introduced along with stress that will cause the problem. I'm ok with the disagreements but when I've lost so many of them in one go.... yeah 😅 but yeah in order to save the ones I had I had to go full hydro on them and the three I had rescued are doing great this way. I would love it to be hype in my case but I just had the most awful experience with them 🤷 sometimes some plants are just going to cause problems for people for different reasons. I'm not into selling plants btw, but I wouldn't be suprised shipping interstate was part of my issue in the middle of summer 😂 so I do think it's on me, and not the seller or plant itself. But it is weird when it's the only plant I've ever had to have this amount of hassle.😅 but like I said, different people will have different problems with different plants (mine were going to be gifts... that went out the window super quickly 😅)

I don't really hear people with the same issue in Australia with Thai Cons (I assumed it's where our Thai Con TC was being sourced). Were you buying cuttings or grown out tissue culture stock from a nursery? I have two, a low variegation one from just before the plant boom, that thing is a tank, the amount of times I underwater it (it's incredibly root bound and needs more water every 3-4 days) and a more variegated one I got a few months ago. I guiltly still have it in the peat moss it came with and lives tucked away in my greenhouse where my misters don't reach (though it's been so cold they haven't had to turn on).

It's not just when plants leave TC. I've kept around 30 Thai Cons over the past 3-4 years and only had like 5 small ones from TC batches. The rest were all established plants, from small to medium, medium and even large sized ones. Some of them are just really much more prone to root rot than others and that can happen at any size.

I kind of agree with you, I find my Thai Constellation very resilient, as unkillable as my other deliciosa. But I have heard opinions of people with a lot of experience with plants that say their old ThaiCon is unkillable and easy to propagate but the new batches are different and they struggle to keep the roots alive even on large cuttings so I dont know what to believe. I know when you overuse an hormone on a plant I can permanently reduce it's ability to produce it itself. It's supposed to be the reason why many Anthurium and Spathiphyllum that are sold full of inflos are unable to bloom again for a decade once at home because they are heavilly fed on gibberelin by the nurseries. Maybe to respond to the high demand during the pandemic the lab producing the Thai Constellation tried to produce them faster and overdosed the gels in rooting hormones?

@@StalkerNaturaliste could be, I've just seen a few different sellers on Facebook selling from their labs. Maybe they are just white labeling them? That would give a lot of credence to the one lab theory and make the Pythium theory and genetic degradation a lot more plausible. I have seen the TC sold in a few diff containers so hard to say. If anyone can produce some info on that I would love it!

This video is a pretty big L. I've kept over 30 Thai Cons over the past 4 years and there is definitely some that are much more prone to root rot than ANY other plant I've ever kept. Literally any. The story of my latest Thai Con (one of those newer "creme" Thai Cons): Got it medium sized, already pretty well rooted. Terrible soil though. So I repotted her a month after getting her, into my aroid mix where literally every other aroid thrives. Result: ROOT ROT. 90% of the roots were gone within 6 days. I cut them back to the stem, disinfected the stem (and the tiny part thats left of the roots) with H2O2 and let it sit in pure RO water to re-root. Worked perfect, as it always does. 3 weeks later it had grown back a ton of roots. Gave it a tiny bit of fert (literally 1/20 of the dose) and boom: back to ROOT ROT. Again... cut all the roots back, disinfected the stem + the little bit of roots left and stuck it into pure RO water. Re-rooted like crazy again, within 2-3 weeks there were tons of new roots around. This time, I tried pon. Guess the outcome? ROOT ROT! Some Thai Cons are 100% more prone to root rot than others. There isn't a single doubt about that and I have lots of friends that have kept dozens of them over the years and not a single person disagrees with that. Now that doesn't mean that we should called them "V1", "V2" or even "V350". I agree that thats just really dumb. But there is a point to make. Because I've actually had more issues recently (last 6-10 months) with them. Especially those newer ones that are sold as "creme" (much higher variegated ones). Nontheless... Thai Cons are generally much more prone to root rot than ANY other variegated Monstera (and I've kept them all), though, there is some that aren't as prone to it. Some Thai Cons I've repotted multiple times within like half a year and had zero issues with that. Others? Touch them once and the roots are gone! And I treat all my Monsteras the same. Water them once the soil is almost dry - I always use a moisture meter and water when they're at the 3 (out of 10), which is the beginning of dry. Arguing that they're not generally quite prone to root rot is just silly from you. It's like arguing that the aurea isn't more prone to browning than the albo. It 100% is too. I've kept 5 albos at one time and had zero browning, even though one of them had stable Halfmoon leaves and two very extremely highly variegated (meaning 75%+ variegated) - ZERO browning. Kept and watered my aureas the exact same way, same aroid mix, same watering conditions etc. etc... and they brown all the time after a while.

@@TechplantChannel I mean I'm keeping all kinds of Monsteras, difficult Anthuriums etc. and I've never ever had root rot issues with plants other than as you said, when I fucked up badly and totally overwatered or so, which really hasn't happened in years. But Thai Cons are totally different. It's hard to put a number next to it, but I'd guess at least one or two out of ten can be extremely prone to it. And as I said, I did indeed have more problems recent-ish with these "creme" batches. Particularly the last one. It's mind-boggling how many times I've disinfected it to my best knowledge, re-rooted it in pure RO water and then boom, back to root rot as soon as it gets the tiniest bit of fertilizer and isn't sitting in water with zero minerals. 4 times in total is how many times I've done that. Tried potting it into aroid mix when it grew back tons of roots (literally a quarter gallon water cup full of fresh water roots) twice. Then I've tried pon and the latest try was keeping it in water, just add a tiny bit of fertilizer to the RO water... every single time it ended up killing the roots within days. That sh*t ain't normal. I actually threw that plant in the trash can. Though I do regret not trying it again, only this time potting her into fluval stratum right after disinfecting. Who knows, maybe this could've been the cure. But I think theres definitely some kinda bacteria inside the plant that murders the roots as soon as it's not sitting in a "semi sterile" environment. Not every Thai Con is like that though, even those that are prone to root rot. Thats an extreme case. I've had half a dozen others rot, but usually after re-rooting and potting them into a fresh aroid mix, they were fine. Some of them still had a little bit of continued rot, but much more healthy new roots growing (basically out-competing the rotting) and were fine in the airy aroid mix. Again, totally agree with your point that it's dumb to make up "V1", "V2" names and such nonsense and try to make more money by selling plants with such tags. And it's also definitely true that these plants DO get cheaper thanks to TC. You can actually get pretty nicely variegated Thai Cons (small to medium size) here in Europe for ~40-50 bucks.

Idk about v1 or v2 but thai con is the only TC I've ever lost and I have been growing TC out for years, even rehabbed a few on their last leg. TC is actually what got me into houseplants from the aquarium hobby. My thai con was from Orange Lake Nursery and had 4 quarter sized leaves and a huge root system before deflasking. I was stoked! They don't like stratum tho bc mine rotted *literally* overnight. I've never had something rot that fast, it was almost impressive. I still have the top 2 immature nodes with leaves. I have it in water and perlite and I think it can make a comeback, as I've done this with a standleyana. It was $15 so either way it's not a big deal.

Thai constellations have always been prone to root rot. I lost a massive one in 2019 before this TC fever picked up. It's just the plant. Pot and water them accordingly, it's simple as that

Did you read his linked papers? I did and my main point which he also STILL says is just his personal anecdotal theory is that pythium is hidden deep in the tissue of all his thai cons and it's killing his plants. I highly suggest you read the entire papers he posted you will find they add nothing and bring us back to his original idea. My entire argument is that these 'new thai cons' are not noticeably different from any prior version. Go read his papers and apply them to his or my argument. His entire argument predicates on the idea that all 'new thai cons' came from a SINGLE SOURCE/LAB that used a horribly infected mother plant and experienced a serious genetic degradation. And that pythium was dormant deep inside the plant tissue and waited to strike when it got to your home which almost 100% already had pythium spores already present which are just waiting for a stressed plant and favorable conditions to infect and multiply I read most of the papers he posted well before I made my video.

I just got into aroids and I was sold a Florida ghost it must have just been deflasked the second I bought it. as soon as I got it set up in my greenhouse it was already melting away from shipping right after deflasking. It’s annoying because I know they just buy like a 10 pack tc and then pull them out and flip it and act like it’s a established plant

I recently watched a different video talking about pythium infected tissue cultures and my first thought was…is this fungus in the dna, like hiding out at the molecular level? I actually asked that question in the comments, not quite understanding how batches of tissue culture could hold root rot within their tissues in that way. So glad to see this video. It reminded me to trust my instincts. I didn’t think pythium could store itself in tissue culture. I think that particular plant MIGHT be prone to rot, but what that actually means is the plant prefers a certain soil, less watering, more air flow, more light, etc.

If you're interested in the science, Google oospores. They are one of the ways Pythium spp. reproduces. Oospores are INCREDIBLY resilient and TINY. They can remain ungerminated UNTIL unsterile conditions exist. In the author's words: "Oospores are extremely durable and have survived for more than 10 years. Pythium spp. have survived passage through the intestinal tracts or earthworms, snails, and birds." This means they could ABSOLUTELY survive inside the Xylem/Phloem/Vascular system of a plant via the root, and live in the Tissue. The Paper is called DISEASES OF AGRONOMIC AND VEGETABLE CROPS CAUSED BY PYTHIUM

@@prettyingreen …I just looked up oospores. My scientific conclusion…plants can be little btches but I still love them. And nature is amazing. ❤️ Love your channel by the way, very informative. Very interesting. You were the first video I found on how tissue culture works. I remember looking into it maybe 3 years ago and there was nothing, it was only whispered about as if it were being kept as an industry secret.

I think the only thing to conclude is how little we know about how the natural world works, and how damn creative biology can be just to survive. I appreciate you watching the channel! Im still new to the plant world, built a 3X4 greenhouse for seedlings w/ 4 shelves of 10W bulbs, & moved the greenhouse to clean & forgot to return it to the shade & the subny window I moved it near FRIED my 3 mo old monstera seedlings. I managed to save 1 seedling of each variety & mow I count it a blessing as I know if these seedlings can survive burn, they’ll survive anything 😂.

My man I never left a youtube comment in 15 yrs but I paid 80 bucks and watched mine die roots 100% leaves 100% stem exactly the only thing that rots and in perfect propbox conditions in leca without a resevoir. The one you bought was out of the 'zone of death' from plug to about 4 in pot they're INSANELY fragile more than any other micro nano baby prop I've had. I got another from a local greenhouse just smaller than 4 in pot, clearly a tc to plug to ghouse situation, and have been watching it get internal scarring on leaves and tissue fighting off 'something' (fingers crossed yes in leca no resevoir). I fully believe in human error and not giving the plant industry too much credit; they make mistakes and rush things to make money all the time. I think V2 TC was sketch and went it goes through the greed gauntlet it only gets worse with care for the babies before they get to you so they may be DOA even looking ok. Think its better to wait for price drop and getting one at least 4-6 in pot and taking backup cuttings like you said. Also my still alive one is considered a creme brulee ( so ridiculous lol)

Yeah I think that's the key they have been rushed out the lab and onto shelves and have never gotten established as a plant. I have no doubts that people are losing them. But I'm thinking the main reason is what you and I stated. It's rushed to the shelves

Learned my lesson buying micro; going to get my plants at least 4 in pots now. Oh also same ish thing happened with a dieffenbachia reflector I bought TC sized ugh still rehabbing.

@@TechplantChannel Thats nonsense. Theres tons of sellers here in Europe that sell them medium sized with a shit load of roots. Nontheless, the chance for them to rot is pretty high once you repot it.

Thanks for sharing because lmao this is exactly what is happening. So many people getting valuable plants and they keep messing with them because they’re small and vulnerable. I got an albo and i switched it from water to permite like 5 times because of rot and now that it’s alone in perlite is starting to establish but I’m waiting for roots

I agree with you. I had thai cons that struggled and I kept stressing out about it. It was when I neglected it and treated it like all my other plants that they started thriving.

Yeah, I honestly think this is more aimed at Kaylee Ellen than Pretty in Green. He's just getting most of the attention because he recently did a video about it where he also put forward this theory, which reinvigorated a lot of these conversations. But I'm pretty sure it started with Kaylee Ellen.

shes been a long time offender of the "never getting cheaper" sentiment. This video really exists to encourage people to look into these themes and form their own opinions and not just listen to a talking head (me included) when we start spouting nonsense. when i sorta "polled" some facebook groups many people responded with the "I heard this or that from somebody" and just a lot of info gets spun up that way.

@@TechplantChannel I can't speak about the US market and only the Australian market but I was told the Thai Cons in Australia are artificially inflated by the growers who purposely hold back stock to create demand. They've come down in price but only because people are selling much smaller plants. A decent sized plant will still set you back around $200 here. No grower here wants to rock the boat and decrease it's value, why make $10 when you can easily make $100.

Ya guys are spitting on the knowledges that we (students,scientists and people working plant biology) have accumulated for yrs and gave to "plant lovers/influencers"... please, do not forget it.

I subscribe 2 u because I appreciate ur point of view. I don't expect u 2 b right all the time. Ur view comes from research & ur experiences. Ur environment is different than ur neighbor's, than other Plant Parents anywhere else. Personally I watch several influencers from several channels & then try suggestions from all of u 2 c what will work best 4 me. That's all I want from u, just some guidance when I'm having problems figuring things out 4 myself. So Thank YOU 4 ur input, it helps! Keep up the great work, love ur channel! 🤎❣

Thai Cons seem like they are easily stressed. They don’t like shipping or repotting. They definitely hate wet substrates but then again most monsteras do. They also don’t do well switching their substrate to a different type. Moral of the story, buy one and leave that diva alone for about 3 months. When you do repot, I’d suggest NOT disturbing the root ball. ✌️🫶🌞

Hehe the red spot on your neck, I totally relate 😅 I have a birthmark on my ring finger that goes from pale pink to bright red. Totally agree with everything you’ve said. People spreading misinformation without even taking the time to research is EXTREMELY frustrating. 🫠
