My Refugee Journey | Dai Le | TEDxOrange

Dai Le escaped war-torn Vietnam with her family on a refugee boat and has beaten cancer. Hear her tale of resilience, adventure and determination.
Dai Le was born in Saigon, Vietnam and spent years in refugee camps in South East Asia. Her family was resettled in Australia in December 1979. Dai has been a journalist, film-maker and broadcaster with the ABC. She was a Councillor on Fairfield City Council, stood for the NSW state seat of Cabramatta and was one of the Australian Financial Review’s Top 100 Women of Influence in 2014. She is passionate about increased mainstream representation of Asian Australian and culturally diverse men and women. She supports that goal as CEO & founder of DAWN (Diverse Australasian Women’s Network), an organisation that champion diverse leadership beyond gender.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

In 2022, Dai Le has made history as the first refugee to be elected in the Australian House of Representatives as an independent MP for Fowler, without support from any of the major political parties, entirely with her own merits and her allegiance to her community.

This story is still relevant today as Ukraine goes through their current unnecessary war.

They should have stayed in Vietnam to rebuild the country. Many did. Any hardship that they suffered was caused by their desertion of their own country.

If you were running away from Vietnam after the war, it meant you thought you were going to die.

But you would have been wrong. And later, when the crisis was passed and it was possible to go back to Vietnam to visit relatives safely, the runaways still didn't return to their homeland.

@@chriswatson1698 Why did you run away from Old England to come to Australia Chris Watson? According to what you say, you should go back to your Motherland and not stay in First Nation land. People chose to stay here is the same reason why you chose to stay here instead of returning to your Old England. or your Old Saxony in Germany.

@@salimali8668 That is not true. My grandparents came to an outpost of their own country. The infrastructure and institutions were built by members of their own nation. They did not go to another nation to take a share of the living standard that was bought and paid for by other people's ancestors. They are entitled to have the fruits of their own labour go to their own descendants, not to strangers who weren't interested in Australia until the whites made her rich.

@@Dragon_Lance It is NOT the responsibility of Australians to give the rest of the world 'better lives'. The people of Europe endured centuries of bad government and their countries were bombed during the 20th century. Burglars want better lives. Our nations are our homes and we, our parents and grandparents have worked hard to make them comfortable places for our children and our children's children. We are entitled to have the fruits of our labour go to our own descendants. Modern migrants and refugees are like burglars who go into other people's homes to get a share of the stuff that the residents have worked hard to pay for.
