My rebuild S54 Engine FAILED after ONLY 3000 KM

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we will be taking the newly rebuid S54B32 engine out of my E36 to see what caused the engine to fail. What do you think caused the engine to fail?
Hopefully the engine block itself can be saved and it will be in the car soon.

Had the same issue. When measured piston to cylinder clearence the parts are a lot under the room temperature. When the engine revs especially with high compression the pistons get very hot and if the clearance at 15 degrees celsius is 0.06mm which is actually the minimum clearance, when the engine gets warm, the clearence gets under 0.06mm and by that way you can easily breake your engine. For street use you can use 0.06mm clearance but for track it's better to go up to 0.8, 0.9, for nitro even more, the same as piston ring gaps. I work in professional machine shop and a little hone with torque plate only will do the work. Aim for 0.08mm clearance. Nice content, cheers 🤜🤛

Cheer up! Quite outstanding what you are doing by yourself. You really have passion for it :) Good luck with the S54 issue and hopefully it will be fixed soon. The E36 S54 is the best combo ever, you will enjoy it for sure.

did you tune for higher compression? windowing is the problem with stock. When you up the compression it only gets worse

to be honest i don't think you have found the problem. The marks or "little" skratches normally don't cause high oil consumption. On an engine with high milage this is almost normal. Often they don't consume much oil. Although you can't really see it in the video either. Maybe the crankcase-vent is defective?

This is not a high mileage engine, it ran for 3000km

@@TJS36 i know. It's a litltebit strange to see this "damage" but i don't think this is causing your oilproblem. Let's wait and see the enginebuilder finds out 👌

What a major dissapointment! Hope the block and pistons can be saved. If it turns out to be a fault by the machine-shop who prepared the block is there any chance for a refund?

Yeah but by the time your done the costs will probably be the same as new. I just looked and vac motorsport do it but it’s £2,400 not including the sleeves which is another $125 each and then you’ve also got to supply your block. The blocks seem to vary from £1000 to £1800 with similar damage as his so your looking at about £4000. Then the next issue is why would you bore your new sleeves out again to fit his pistons so you need new pistons. You get where I’m going don’t you? It’s only worth it if your boosted
