My Rare 19th Century Silver Hong Kong Coin Collection
Hi KZread! Here's my collection of nicer, larger silver coins from the British colony of Hong Kong in China. The Chinese lost the island after the Opium war then leased the peninsula for another hundred years in 1897. In 1997, the area was handed back to China with pomp and ceremony. Overnight, the word "Royal" on signage was removed.
If you want to mail me something, I’ll put it in my next video!

Very good! Excellent!! Thanks for sharing. Those are some wonderful pieces you have. My own collection is not nearly as complete. They are my favorite coin type. I think the symbol on the back of your Honk Kong dollars is for ''Double Happiness''. Just love the design. I have one of those Japanese Yen you mentioned, from 1893. Mine is also heavily bowed due to so many chop-marks. Would love to buy your whole collection. Peace.
Gd day i have chinese old coin 8pcs silver dollar. 1yuan coin yr 1934, 1yen coin, one hongkong dollar queen victoria 1866,i have also one tael coin fien tien provinc and kwang tung province and 1 trade dollar 1876.thank u n stay safe mr fernandez from the phil.god bless

Feels good to look back in history espically when I live in hong kong

cool
Are most of them uncirculated ? I have some Queen Victoria and Edward VII collection but their crowns are somewhat fading.
I've started collecting hong kong coins myself. They turn up now and then. Got a nice trade dollar a few months back for £5 GBP
Hi HT! I paid about $300-$400 each for the HK silver dollars and around $30 for the fifty cent pieces. Mind you, I had bought them probably about 5 years ago or longer. CP

Idiot ! No such thing as George 7th. Open a book and learn some history.
An 1889 P Morgan Silver Dollar my parents had in a drawer since around the time I was born more just after I was born like in 1979, They got from a Winchell's Donut shop as my father veered over into the cashier's drawer and saw it and just simply asked for it in change. In 1987 I got hold of it and the rest was history! I just enjoy the allure and the history of numismatics. Do you feel that silver and gold are going to ascend in value per world economic ebb and dysfunction?
1896 20 cent was really nice. I should collect more Chinese silver
They command a premium as I recall as they sustained a lesser mintage.
Hiya, just a question: is that still within the acceptable range if my British trade dollar weighs 26.64 grams? The unc one ought to be about 26.95 grams.

+Coinpicker Thanks for your prompt reply. I have restarted the interest to collect such daily circulated type silver coins recently. Last week, I purchased two US Trade Dollars via ebay. Now in transit. May I ask what is the tolerable weight?

+freddy freddy I think within 1 gram under is still pretty good but over by a gram, I would worry its silver plated brass or an alloy copy.

Depends on condition but I would think a VF would be at least USD$1000 these days in the raw.
I have half dollar Hong Kong 1868 very good condition for sall
Wow! I only have the 1891 20 cents and a 1905 50 cents, even after i moved to Hong Kong on buisness purposes!
"The Chinese lost the island after the Opium war then leased the peninsula for another hundred years in 1897. "? Then why HK made this coin locally at HK in 1866? Actually, Hong Kong was a colony of GB in 1842 and 1897, new territories were added to the colony.

Hi, I guess the Brits made the HK dollar to compete against the Spanish, American and Japanese silver trade coins. However, the cost did not make sense so they sold the minting presses to Japan and just imported British trade dollars made in Britain.
I have one cent hongkong victoria queen dated 1901

I have several Great Britain Trade Dollars in roughly AU grades. Do you have any Trade Dollars minted by the Calcutta Mint??? You seem to be a serious collector. I myself am a Numismatist for some 27 years now since my childhood and I have not hesitated to pursue World Coins. I have countless silver pieces that are no run of the mill. Would you believe that I bought an AU grade 1904 Canadian Quarter for $6 about a little over a year ago???!!!! It books for over a $1000!!!

Are these often faked on eBay I am seeing them there but I'm afraid to purchase because they look like maybe they are
@Coinpicker

M- Nice Hi! Many things have been faked all these years but the fakes are getting more difficult to distinguish. But use common sense as a $1000 should not be listed on EBay for $1.00 starting price and coming from China. Either buy graded and slabbed coins from reputable sellers or obviously circulated, lower grade material to start as it is difficult to fake honest wear. Just like anything worth collecting or doing in life, it take work and research. Always be carful when buying. Cheers! CP

You need to measure and weigh your coin to compare with the official specifications. Also check for magnetism since silver should not be attached to a magnet normally.

Nice video just want to say your 1867 $1 looks fake after watching your video many times. The letters are too thick.

John Chak Hi John, i believe it is real but been polished. That may account for the letters not looking so sharp. The dimensions and weight are spot on. I’ll probably upgrade it eventually . If you look closely, it does have an rim ding which would be easier to do on a real silver coin than a harder alloy or thicker fake. Cheers! CP

@@Coinpicker send it to PCGS or NGC. I also have the three coins myself. 1866, 1867, and 1868 dollar.
Too bad all the coins are heavily cleaned and thus are mainly just silver value..........did you buy them like that? Never buy such heavily cleaned junk.
@Coinpicker

kamuzu Hi K! Of course I would prefer high grade issues but I buy what comes available for a good price. When it comes to difficult to come by issues, some past cleaned coins do not go down to silver value unless they are really common or very modern. Every collecting level has its own market. Plus, beginners do start out with filler coins and replace them with higher grades later on within their budgets. Sell all your lower grade HK Victorian coins and I’ll gladly buy each and every one for silver value. Lol! I doubt many would be willing. Bought a holed Hong Kong 1867 silver dollar for less than $100 before on EBay and ended up reselling locally for $300. Different buyers, different budgets. Thanks for your opinions! CP

@@Coinpicker ok, thanks for that explanation. I know the HK market but for paper money not so much coins. I agree that any Victorian HK silver would always be over silver value even in lowest grade. As a bank note collector I have a very low tolerance for any cleaning or pressing of notes, so was bringing that bias into the coins. Congrats on finding all three of those $1 dates.....1866, 7, 8 !

I dabble a bit with banknotes too. When I found a super low serial numbered $20 from circulation (I think 0000053) I was very forgiving on the condition (VF?) since it was for face value. I’m a value collector. I live for a great deal. I may not want something for my own collection but buy it to trade or resell if it’s a steal.
