Having previously done customer service for them, I was always shocked at how people will pay so much money for such old vehicles, with high mileage. The vehicle has a 4 year/50,000 mile warranty, which had already expired via years seeing as it was a 2016. So called luxury vehicles come with really high maintenance costs, that only increase after the manufacturer's warranty has expired. I took so many calls from people like you, who are unaware corporate cannot help. The manufacturer of your vehicle can only essentially help while the vehicle is under their warranty. After that, you are indeed on your own. I am so happy you got a brand new car. God is good and you are so blessed compared to many of the other horror stories I heard about. FYI, dealerships will still buy that faulty car from you with no problem and sell it to someone else. Also, if you can buy a $50,000 used car, you can buy a $50,000 new car. Few luxury vehicles are actually luxury. People need to pay less attention to hype and do their research. Honda and Toyota are still the King because their cars last. They are quality over hype.

My issue is 2 fold. When they say get rid of it what do they mean? Scrap it or pass the problem to someone else who they will give the same “get rid of it” advice? Secondly if they can’t fix it then this is a standards issue. Not sure how it works in the US but trading standards should get involved when registered businesses are selling the public products that are not fit for purpose.

This!! I couldn’t of said it any better in 3 years this vehicle will be 10 years old and at 50k dollars plus maintenance cost it’s definitely NOT worth it.. Range Rovers literally have 90% bad reviews..they look nice THATS it . Before buying any type of car i suggest you read BAD reviews vs listening to people who are just obsessed with car because it’s “luxury”… I’ll take reliability over “luxury” any day

Comedy of errors. I’ve owned Land Rovers for 25 years. I currently have a 2017 D5 with the TD6. DEF is common to all modern diesels. If the vehicle hasn’t been driven for awhile the DEF can crystallize in the tank or clog the injector. Both are an easy fix. You clean them off. The dealer and service tech didn’t know what they were doing. All they had to do was follow a simple diagnostic procedure on topix to identify the sensor or wire fault. Not sure what was changed for $1300. Any sensor can be purchased from LR Direct and they come straight from the UK by DHL in a couple days. $450 for an oil change is a crime. You can get factory recommended oil and filter from Atlantic British for around $100. If you don’t do the service yourself, you should be able to have any shop change the oil with your oil for $50 or less. For any luxury brand there are indy or independent repair shops that are usually run by factory trained techs. Indy shops are often cheaper and offer higher level diagnostic services than dealerships. Dealerships tend to just change expensive parts without doing true diagnostic work. I’ve been in the Army for 30 years. I can’t recall using DEF in our vehicles. LR vehicles are used here in Colorado because they are unstoppable on mountain passes and snow.

Mechanic at Euro Cars Southend told me parts for a range can take months to come in …… and Knowing my luck I would break down within a month. So I Kept my S-class and said prayers for my friends with Range Rovers ….. wish you the best! Mazda not bad . You could have sold your Range Rover through Carlotz …they do consignment and sell it for you on their website and dealers lot . Your story is so regrettable & unbelievable considering the vehicle has only about 40.000 miles on it. I definitely feel your pain & even more so your complete frustration with the vehicle & the company/auto/maintenance dept. for not being able to fix the problem completely. Paying $50,000 dollars for a vehicle with extremely low milage & yet still having all these mechanical issues is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE. Unfortunately, I have many friends & associates who invested in a Range Rover that also gave them nothing but unending grief & stress, especially when they received the maintenance bill for repairs. I can happily say, & hopefully, I haven't jinxed myself, that I chose to purchase the Land Rover LR4 rather than the Range Rover & I have had no issues at all other than the regular vehicle needs such as oil change & new brakes. I'm also fortunate enough to have a mechanic who is qualified to do all the work on my vehicle & so I don't have to deal with the extreme overpricing that is routinely found at Land Rover/Rande Rover dealership/maintenance dept. Land Rover/Range Rover vehicles are absolutely beautifully stunning & I know how difficult it must have been for you to finally accept the fact that you have a "lemon" that is going to quickly become a money pit for you & so you have to get rid of it. Hopefully, the Mazda you purchased is giving you nothing but security & pleasure in driving.

I'd stay away from most modern diesel engine vehicles. They've been made overly complex with emissions equipment (and that DEF is ridiculous). If I saw a diesel Range Rover for sale, I wouldn't walk, I'd RUN away from it. There's a reason they're priced thousands less than their gas counterparts. They have all kinds of issues. Glad you were able to get rid of it and get something more reliable. I hate that you had to do the voluntary repo thing and take a hit to your credit. Good luck with your new Mazda! it doesn’t always matter but when buying a luxury car such as that one it’s best to find one with meticulous maintenance record keeping. a solid paper trail is important to know how well the car is maintained. so many people assume they can treat these cars like they do their toyota but you can’t. if you’re unfortunate enough to get the vehicle after such a person then it’s 100% gamble. i’m glad you got into something more reliable. good luck!

I'm sorry you went through that. I'm doing a ton of research on the Range Rover sport and most of the issues with them are associated with the diesel engines. Any other complaints have to do with people just not wanting to spend luxury car prices for regular maintenance or sensors bugging out after accidents which can happen in any car, but it's most likely to happen in a Land Rover product. Wish me luck 😬 lol

What a story. Sometimes we falsely believe that the more the vehicle cost the better it is. Not so. I read a comment from the guy on a video of this guy throwing a rod with his Ferrari showing off. The guy said supercars are too delicate for the price you pay for them. You can say that for many luxury cars also. I've never owned a luxury car because living in Atlanta (a status town) I've had many friends who have. I was appalled at the high maintenance costs on these vehicles, plus the high labor costs. I was a Honda, Toyota and Mazda man (I had four) before I bought this used 2020 Kia Soul S in 2022. I love it. But I also love the reliability of the Honda, Mazda and Toyota. All of my friends who had bought those luxury cars - got rid of them for something more dependable. Young people don't get caught in the trap of status buying.

This issue is not a Land Rover issue. The emissions control systems for all diesel engines are extremely, and I mean EXTREMELY unreliable. Speak to anyone who owns a diesel pick up truck or semi truck and you will hear the same stories, or worse. Some semi truck owners have had their small businesses fail due to the extremely high repair costs and unreliability of these systems. And yes, even professional technicians at the dealerships are unable to properly diagnose the faults. They simply follow a checklist that the computer system tells them to and start replacing parts in the hopes that one of said replacements will fix the issue. Among semi truck operators it is not uncommon to hear of $10,000 to $30,000 repair jobs. The most infuriating thing is that there is nothing mechanically wrong with your vehicle. It can still get you where you need to go but because the software within the vehicle determines that the emissions are not clean enough it throws your car into a “derate” mode. That is the reason why your car won’t start. For your pain and financial distress, you can thank the EPA, the state of California, and the Democratic Party for requiring such stringent thresholds without demanding that vehicle manufacturers provide reliable systems. Instead the costs are passed on to you, the consumer, while these vehicle manufacturers collect record profits from parts and repairs. Welcome to corporate owned America.

Long story: I had something similar happen to me when buying my car. Went to carmax and purchased a 2014 Audi q5. The car was below mileage for the year PLUS I was in the market for a compact suv and fell in love with this one. Went in, test drove the car (ran like butter. Had that new car smell)and was already pre approved so the purchase went smoothly. About 3-5 days later my oil light came on out of nowhere. Luckily carmax has that 30 day return policy so I utilized that. Called carmax and they told me my system might have to be reset and of course it was much worse. According to them, the pipe that gave my car its turbo boost was cracked and leaking. They let me know they could fix it and I’d have it back in a week or so. A week goes by and the new part they bought was leaking worse than the original part. I was told it would take another week for them to order and install a brand new piece(I was driving a loaner car at this point). A week goes by and I get no phone call to update me on the condition of my car so i took the initiative and called them first. I was redirected to the folks that have been helping me this whole time and was told AGAIN that it would take another week bc they couldn’t find a new piece for my car. At this point we’re at the beginning of week 4. I had the car for 3 days….(rmbr carmax has a 30 day return policy) Carmax ended up having my car for the entire month. I called them for the last time and told them to stop any work that they were doing on the car and that I’d like to speak with the service manager face to face. Ended up speaking with the guy and he let me know that the service area was swamped and that they have the new piece for the car and It would be ready tmr morning. Before this meeting I found out carmax puts aftermarket parts on ALL their cars and that worried me bc this was a German made car. He reassured that everything would be fine and that they do this all the time but if I felt uncomfortable, I could look into their maxcare program if I wanted to get the car repaired by Audi themselves. The downfall of that meant I’d have to sell the car back to carmax, add on an additional $4000 and buy it back. I put all my faith into this last repair, got the call and got excited. Received my keys, turned my car on and was distraught. Not only did my ac come out really slow but the car was now smoking.. a lot. Drove it right up to the service area and the guy let me know that bc the second piece leaked so bad, there was excess oil left in the pipe and that it would take about 3 days to really burn off. Accepted that excuse and drove the car home. At that point I didn’t feel comfortable with the car anymore. Gave the car another 3 days (all I had left of the 30 day return policy) and immediately gave the car back. The car was not just smoking at this point, it wasn’t just having ac problems but now the engine was revving itself while in park which caused the lights inside to flicker. also when you turn the car off it was STILL smoking like.. engulfing the entire back side of the car type of smoke. Will NEVER buy a car luxury or not from carmax EVER again.

This is the thing with Range Rovers, they feel great to sit inside them and to look at them but the issues are never ending. I went to test drive a defender - beautiful car, handled great - i was ready to order one but when I finished the 40 min test drive it broke. Aparently the engine broke so I took it as a blessing and never looked at another RR since.

Range Rovers are expensive Fords, just like Maserati's are expensive Chryslers. German cars are always worth the cost because even though it can be expensive at repair (if ever needed), they are so so so reliable. I bought a Mercedes Benz with 60,000 miles, drove for about 2 years before needing anything major, and at 200,000 miles, even though there were no issues, I traded, got more than what I paid for the car, and upgraded.

I seen on the previous service reports before I bought the car that they changed out the DEF filter. I’ve been adding my own DEF fluid and I’ve never had problem with the car so far -knock on wood. I buy the Castro oil that it asked for from Atlantic British online. The oil kit with the new drain plug and filter is about $140. I take it over to Valvoline lube and tell them I have my own oil filter and they put it in for me for $35. Much better than taking it to the dealer.

Omg! I had a different issue with my Range Rover Evoque but it was still the same headache and stress you had. I bought it from a fake luxury dealership and on my way home the check engine light came on. I went back n forth with the dealership and they never found what was wrong. I eventually took it to RR and it was the catalytic converter. They wanted $3400 to fix it. By the grace of GOD!!!! The check engine light went off and I sold it to Carmax! I was so happy to get that damn lemon off my hands. It's so crazy bc one day I was at a stop light and a complete stranger rolled down his window and asked if i liked my RR. I said yes for the most part. He looked at me and I was like, should I not? He was like do your research on it. The light turned green and he drove away. I was like 😳. That made me realize RR ain't really all that. Im sad you did the voluntary repo bc of the negative hit to your credit. I would've just tried to resell after the light went off but i understand it's all about timing.
