My PS Vita DIED | Let's INSTALL a USB-C Port!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Sadly, the Sony PS Vita I fixed recently has stopped charging and is now dead. It gives me a great opportunity to rip out the old proprietary port and replace it with a shiny new USB C port.
This mod is the VitaC from Oxyll Mods and is available here: oxyllmods.square.site/
Hope you enjoy!

    Entertaining and extremely helpful. Up until now my only experience with soldering was tinning and joining wires and replacing the shoulder button on my Steam Deck. But I really wanted to do this mod and your video gave me the confidence and knowledge to do it. I'm still in a bit of disbelief that I was able to solder such small components with just a magnifying glass and $50 soldering station. I had to get a hot air station for desoldering the old port, but that's alright since this project really gave me the confidence to look for other modding projects that I had shyed away from due to the soldering work. Subbed and thanks again for documenting the install of this mod so well!

    I’m surprised the data connection worked that well, because D+ and D- are a differential pair and need to match in length, but I guess USB2.0 is quite forgiving in that regard.

  • @root42

    @root42

    Is it so fragile? These are mere millimeters, right?

  • @red13emerald

    @red13emerald

    Жыл бұрын

    @@root42 Indeed. Even if you were to squeeze 10Gbit through a single differential pair, the signal itself is traveling 20 centimeters per bit, so even with a 5 centimeter mismatch the differential signals are clearly related to each other, but that’s not relevant. The whole point of differential pairs is that any interference will equally increase or decrease the voltage in both traces, meaning the voltage difference stays the same. If the traces aren’t length-matched, the differential signals will be shifted in phase, meaning the effects of the interference on each trace will arrive at the receiver at different times, so they don’t cancel each other out anymore. The higher the bandwidth, the more closely these lengths need to be matched because each bit is on the line for a shorter amount of time, so the receiver has less time to monitor the voltages and clearly discern the signal from the noise.

    Funny, it always amused me when Steve does fixes like these and says the mod is in the description. I would love to mod my 3 Vita's, but I would not even dream of attempting to as I know I would ruin them. Even when I used to do this for a living (TV and video repairs,) I would not even attempt to solder surface mount components, or components you cannot solder with the naked eye. I just stuck to through hole stuff. I would leave this sort of work to to the experts like Steve ( even though for comedy reasons he pretends not to be.) Also, I never used flux either. Had to look it up when I saw Steve using it to see what it was!

    Oh you're missing the secrets right in front of your eyes... Flux is magic. It creates just the right surface tension so you need absolutely no skill with the soldering iron. You just put the heat in the area and everything kind of melts works supposed to with surface mount stuff. But the eyes thing. I feel you man. That's why there's one other secret to everybody who does surface Mount things regularly. We don't look at it. We look at the big screen for the camera or microscope. I still can't do the hand soldering if I have too much caffeine but you can do hot air.

  • @alexbrown1050

    @alexbrown1050

    2 жыл бұрын

    Anyone can do surface mount work, just takes a bit of patience, practice and a microscope doesn't hurt. Believe in yourself! Also most people don't use flux because they use flux core solder, which is a more efficient method of applying flux at the same time as solder. It doesn't work if you wick your solder onto the tip and then touch the tip to the component though, so flux helps with that habit.

    Hi Stez, loving your vids and as a result have developed an interest in dragging all of my dead electronics from the past 10 years or so out of the cupboards (can never bring myself to bin them). Decided to buy a microscope similar to your in the near future. Unfortunately can't afford £300 for a soldering iron on top of the scope and wondered if you or your followers had a more budget friendly option that you might consider suitable for micro work on PCB's possibly £100 - £150 available in UK. You might even consider recommending a budget starter kit for people who just want to work on their own gear. Your opinion would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    It's been a while since you asked, but if you are still looking, look into the pinecil soldering iron. It's about $26.00 US. Right now, it's out of stock, since they are releasing a new version, but should be back in stock in a few weeks. You can also get the Hakko FX-888D for about $100.00. KZread channel EEVBlog has a video where he recommends a $330 electronics repair setup if you want to know how to get started on a budget. My advice is to start off with a good soldering iron, multimeter, solder, solder wick, and of course, the blue silicon mat :grinning_face: Then start to repair, and as you need stuff, buy it. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get into repair, at least initially. Good luck!

    great mod. I have a few vita's, I've noticed with my oled vita. it doesn't like every usb wall plug I have. I have to use a Sony Ericsson one. and a aftermarket cable. I thought when you used your Nintendo usb c charger it might not work, and my Anker power bank always cuts out, when I try and charge with the Nintendo charger for some reason. getting pretty famous now. I expect to see you on the masked singer soon, with Dave in the corner.
