My problem with mental health treatment on the NHS

Sharing my experience with antidepressant prescriptions and Talking Therapy. Sorry for all the times I say "you know" in this video. I find it hard to talk to the camera without a drink in my hand.

I can't imagine the terror of being at the point of desperation where you went to medical professionals for help (which is NOT easy to do) and realising that you're basically on your own.

I'm only 7 minutes in but I can already empathise with what you're saying, there's no consistency of care and it's so flimsy and when it fails they just resort to medicating you, I'm under mental health services for PTSD and in the what 3 years they've been aware of my case now not once have I been allowed to sit down and talk to someone about what happened to me, it feels like it's a service designed for some different kind of demographic, I've never met someone who's come out the other side thanks to NHS mental health services without having to resort to alternative methods of 'healing', honestly I feel for you man, it can leave you feeling pretty hopeless which is the complete opposite of what you want when you've for depression/anxiety

Depression is so hard to deal with. I've delt with it for so long now and it's hard. Not saying I know what your going through, just the feelings of nothing coupled with anxiety I am familiar with. I was on lexapro (a similar SSRI) for about 5 months, I stopped taking it and the withdraws were hellish, severe anxiety and insomnia, weird brain zaps... I stopped taking it because I felt spacey, like I couldn't feel sad or happy, and still had insomnia. I agree with you about the health "business" it seems like they don't listen and kind of put off what you have to say. I know antidepressants that have helped a lot of people, but make sure you know the dependence that can develop, and its a long tapering to get off of them. Something like a short acting anxiety drug may be something to consider. It's good you have a support group, friends and wife, to help you. Best wishes to you and I sincerely hope things start to get better! Also it takes a lot of balls to post a video on this subject. It's reassuring to hear other people are going through similar things.

I have bipolar so does my dad ,maybe I inherited it but I relate to things suddenly getting really bad and feeling at he mercy of public healthcare it's shocking I live in Ireland.you seem like such a pleasant person it's horrible to watch people go through that system and come out worse because of how they've been treated when they are vulnerable.

Im on 10mg Escitalopram for social anxiety and depression, I felt high for around a week but then levelled off. I've been on Metazapine and Floxatine but didn't help. Escitalopram has worked wonders though. Unfortunately I think I'll be on them life, they just make me feel 'normal'.

NHS are pretty useless. I went to my GP in June wanting assessment for a range of issues: nuero-diversity, gender/sensuality issues, and mood disorder. Since then I was given a couple of CBT sessions where it was agreed it was not relevant for me; referred to a gender specialist who said they had a 5 year waiting list and they wouldn't put me on it until I'd already had a few years of counselling first; was referred to a LGBT counselling service who said they weren't equipped to deal with my sexuality issues; referred to a voluntary counselling service who never got back to me; and had a mental health assessment over the phone and was told I'd been put on a waiting list which I might be on for over a year before having any help. Basically, the NHS just puts you on endless waiting lists and does nothing.

The NHS supportive therapy sessions sound like a dynamic transference within the system. They have many training tactics I'm sure. I never went to any but I should have considered it. Your not alone.

The problem with every mental health issue is that everyone's issues are so diverse that just labelling someone as "depressed" is near impossible. There's no one cure all pill or treatment for things but the trick you have to remember is to keep trying different treatments till you find the one that works for you. So many people give up at the first hurdle because the pills weren't right for them. P. S.. Yeh Ted

I have had problems for a long time by now. Every time I try to get myself to go to my GP I always look up the side effects of medicines, the different therapies and the symptoms of anxiety and depression/ being bipolar. The symptoms stated on the NHS website are so generic. They say that people with type 1 bipolar have long manic episodes and long depressive episodes. How long is long for? Is a week enough or a month or a few months? How do I tell the difference between things if the symptoms you stated are almost the same for all of them? The NHS website is so generic! Am I just imagining things like a crazy person? From hearing what you and other people said it makes me think that nothing will help me. The fact that your therapist went over one of the sheets and not the other makes me think that they are just trying to create the illusion that therapy helps.

Sorry to hear that you've been unhappy with your experience mate. What you are describing is a result of significant government cuts to the NHS and to mental healthcare in general. Mental healthcare has always been underfunded but at the moment services are really stretched. No excuse for leaving you unsatisfied though. Regarding the doctors explanation of side effects - I wouldn't worry too much. The information leaflets always have a list as long as your arm for legal reasons and the doctor was right - most people don't experience any troublesome side effects. The main thing is to try the medication and to see if it works or not. Yes, the doctor could have asked you more about your symptoms but the end result would have been the same - there aren't really any differences in the antidepressants in terms of tailoring them to your symptoms, apart from some being a bit more sedative than others. Sounds like the therapy you had was CBT based. Question for you - do you know why you have these problems, as in can you see a cause in your past?

I found therapy unproductive. I know when depressed it hard to find pleasure in things but just the fact that you have KZread vlogs for an outlet is awesome. To get out your thoughts and feelings..let that be your therapy haha..I bet you felt a bit better just letting it out and expressing your feelings to us right?maybe? I found Modafinil is awesome for depression have you heard of it? If not google it I can tell you where to get it..Kratom is awesome too on all levels( anxiety, depression ,mood ,motivation ) I'm glad you have a wife who loves and supports you..Your a lucky guy..It might sound corny but writing your feelings down like keeping a journal is therapeutic.. or if you have a dog or a cat talk to them they are good listeners and love you unconditionally. haha..I'm pulling for ya man..much love

in the same place man just more anxiety for me. really wish there was something better than shitty antidepressants but the docs seem pretty sceptical to try new drugs which sucks cause thats really the only thing thatll work, the therapy is bloody useless. saying that I've got therapy coming up next week cause I've just moved and thats the prerequisite to finding a decent antidepressant apparently. fucking ridiculous, I'll have to stick with the Benzos and Opiates for now lmao - about the prozac, for me its pretty much identical to sertraline, I'd recommend a high dose of mirtazapine, like 60mg a day, its the only antidepressant I've tried with no side effects and at high doses it seems to work great for depression although not so much anxiety. you might wanna talk to your doc about trying that

Anxiety & panic attacks in particular are fuckin horrendous! Was on fluoxetine for years but recently switched to citalopram & am still gettin side effects a month on. Self medicated with alcohol & benzos/opiates - went through really bad withdrawals.. I used to use Kratom and it helped but then that ban came in cos of all the 'legal highs' so no more Kratom.. Pffft If I could get kava at a decent price I'd use that but it's quite pricey to get shipped to the U.K.

What people tend to forget is that it isn’t actually free. In fact you have no choice but to pay for it - that is what National Insurance contributions go towards paying for. Since nobody can choose to not pay for it, it becomes even more sickening when certain members of society are not allowed to get the treatment they ought to be able to receive having been paying for it all their lives.

It's a lie from the pharmaceutical industry. I think you need cognitive behavioral therapy, it's the best way to fix this problems of anxiety and deppression. Maybe something in your life is wrong but you can't see the problem . But definitely, I don't recommend you those pills.

Dude, I know it’s been a while, but you literally watched a video of a guy who mentioned in the video having a wife and doing things with his wife and told them to get a girlfriend. In general, dating someone does not cure depression, but it’s usually even more problematic if someone is happily married.
