I agree algae this time of year is great. What water temp range do you like to start your clean outs in?

  • @LandvistaAquascapes

We tend to start our clean outs when the water hits about 50°F. We like to minimize stress to the fish as much as possible, so we try not to do clean outs when the hose water temperature is drastically different than the pond water.

I live in northern mi...I want a backyard pond..but im clueless about how deep I should go to keep fish from freezing. Any info would be helpful.

We usually dig out ponds to a minimum of 24" (though we have a few clients with shallower ponds) and all of them do we'll throughout the winter. I'm not 100% sure about the climate in Michigan in relation to ponds freezing over, but Chris from Living Water Landscape Service is a friend, and local contractor, in Michigan and may be able to help you better answer that question!

Not really! We don't usually recommend them because, while they are good at treating the SYMPTOMS of green water, they don't do a great job of actually addressing the SOURCE of the issue. Outcompeting the algae (green water) with beneficial bacteria is often the best choice for a stable ecosystem.

I disagree, I have 16,000 gallon pond with hundreds of thousands in koi in it and that’s not was it suppose to happen, sorry buddy. Check out my pond and review some of the details and you’ll see a 7 foot spear as glass pond. You’re needs much work

There's definitely two ways to do it! We like to refer to it as the choice between a "Koi Museum" and a "Natural Ecosystem". We prefer to work with mother nature, rather than against her, so we allow nature to run it's course. That doesn't mean that a massive external filtration system with bottom drains and bare bottom doesn't work (if done properly), it just is a different way of doing things!

@@LandvistaAquascapes Mother Nature separates shit poo water from natural living water the animals live in, look at one day like one or two back in my channel and you’ll see I carry waste are from the pond into my sewer system just like I do with my toilet water. I don’t care how long anyone had been in this, waste water is waste water and it’s no different then ours and you have to separate and move it somewhere else. That why my girls are 40 plus inches

@@chadroy1653 you've got some massive filtration on that pond! Pretty solid for that style. Your waste water tank seems to work similar to a wetland filter, you just flush it out regularly. We have some clients with some MASSIVE koi as well, and they are absolutely THRIVING in their ecosystem ponds. I hope you stick around and subscribe to our channel, we've got a ton of videos lined up and would love to have you
