My Polycarbonate Greenhouse Nightmare continued. The do's and don't, mainly the don'ts.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Always read the 'small print' when buying a greenhouse.
• In the case of strong wind, it is your responsibility to secure the greenhouse adequately and prevent it from damaging materials and injuring people.
• In case of strong wind and extreme weather, we advise you to secure your greenhouse. Overall, we advise you to place your greenhouse in the lee of a building or other structures, which will protect the greenhouse from too strong and direct wind.
• When it snows, snow may pile up on the top of your greenhouse. Wet and heavy snow may cause the greenhouse to collapse. It is your responsibility to remove excessive snow from the roof of your greenhouse and save the structure from damage.
• Do not assemble or disassemble your greenhouse at temperatures below zero. Doing so may damage materials.
• Do not use open fire, welding equipment or other sources of ignition, inside or close to the greenhouse.
• Please note that the warranty applies only to the normal use of the product happening in accordance with the written instructions in your manual. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear. It does not cover damage, defect, wear and tear caused by misuse, poor maintenance, abuse, unauthorised modification or exposure to extreme weather conditions.
• In case of strong wind, we recommend that you close doors and windows of the greenhouse and make sure no loose objects are laying anywhere near the greenhouse.
• We recommend you to check whether your greenhouse is covered by your home contents insurance.
Warning!
This structure is not tested for specific snow and wind loads! See above how to act during various weather conditions.

In Australia we have pretty strong consumer laws. It would likely be deemed not fit for purpose and you'd get your money back. If a product is sold into a known wind and snow area then it should be fit to take the likely loads where it was sold. Suppliers can't 'fine print' their way out of the warranty given by the law.

I think the issue is the way these companies simply substitute 4 or 6mm polycarbolate twinwall in place of glass rather than designing a greenhouse specifically for polycarbonate. This is all very unfortunate as it gives polycarbonate a bad reputation it doesn't deserve. We are in an extremely exposed area and have a greenhouse and cold-frames made using 10mm twinwall polycarbonate and these are about 9 years old and we have had no problems at all. However, these structures use 45x70mm treated timber as the minimum structural material and the twinwall is screwed at regular intervals to the wooden frame using 4mm woodscrews with "penny" washers under the heads for load spreading. This method of fixing copes with the flexibility of the polycarbonate where clipping the stuff into a frame just doesn't. The Polycrubs are a good example of how a greenhouse that is designed to make maximum use of the strength of polycarbonate can produce a hurricane-resistant greenhouse even when only using 4mm twinwall.

I have a 4ft x8ft lean to one. We reinforced the structure with 2inch x2 inch interior framing. This also allows for hanging baskets from the 2x2s. The fromework will also support shade cloth if needed. You can insulate the house with bubble wrap affixed with clear tape if you want . i use the 24inch wide kind with a 1inch bubble. Put the bubble towards the glass. It comes in rolls and is quite reasonably priced.

Sales of product for a specific use, that can't last under "normal" use, should be illegal. Especially if by simply printing same solicited words on a purposely smaller carton that automatically relieves them of any responsibility based on the fact that you bought it anyway. What "waters my garden" off is when the disclaimer is printed on the instruction sheet that is inside of the sealed box it was shipped in! OOOFDAAAA TYFS Jim, Stay Safe and Well Mark and Rosa

A puff of wind came that week and parts of it were delivered back to me by neighbours who had more of my greenhouse then I did! I'm still pondering on how to cobble together a greenhouse with the bits I have...it may have to become a cold frame.

The biggest mistake I made David was not to watch gardener produced videos on Polycarbonate greenhouses. If I had I wouldn't have got one! That's why I produced this series of videos to 'tell it how it is'. With a lot of extra bits and bods I have managed to keep mine intact for 3 years. If you assume its going to be blown away, or fall down, or your going to lose sheets 'beef it up' as best you can. I know that feeling in your gut, I've had it. Best of luck. Jim.

I got a low-cost polycarbonate greenhouse, too. But I put a bunch of rebar connecting it to the ground, threw shade cloth over top (so half would take ferns/orchids/seed flats), then used tie-downs to hold the whole thing heavy to the ground. Since that time, I’ve added a shade house to one side, made of bamboo, and lots of planters and a potting bench to make the composite structure pretty stable. No way I could afford the fancy ones, and so far this has been up two years with no problems.

When I built mine Cherry I had no idea that within days I would be fighting to keep it in one piece. Fighting in the dark, in a rain storm. Now you have watched this video your ahead of the game. The best spot to sight your greenhouse is the most sheltered spot (if you have one). Plan on how your going to hold it down and how your going to secure all the sheets. Get some good helpers on build day and only start it if you have a few calm days forecast. Plenty of mastic along the edges off the sheets will keep them in. The tile edging I got from a kitchen DIY shop. They gave me the gold for about 50p a length I think because nobody wanted gold in their kitchen. It was a snip with lots of holes along its length that I could 'line up' with the frame. Add strength wherever you can and think positive. Good Luck Jim.

I finally went over to Amazon and watched one of these polycarbonate greenhouses being built. It was being built in a room and it looked like a dawdle. Occasionally the flexibility of the frame pieces could actually be seen. The whole video was only 8 minutes and some seconds. Now, that being said, maybe building one in the house (because I live in the mountains) and having fresh greens and tomatoes for salads all winter could be a possibility. I would probably just get one that is a pop-up frame with a canopy for that purpose.
