MY PIGS ARE TRAINED WRONG | Winter Watering Problems

Sometimes, fixing one problem on the homestead, causes another unforeseen problem. This happened to us this year, with out pig waterer. We often install heaters into our animal waterers in the winter to keep them from freezing. Never would have thought it would make the water so warm, the animals wouldn't drink from it. So now we have to come up with a different solution.
Also, we had a wonderful surprise towards the end of this video - when our son shows up to tell us got engaged! We're going to have another wedding in the family soon! So excited, and we absolutely adore Emily and are excited to make her officially part of our family ♥

We can get floating heaters with a guard on it, the disadvantage is they only work good for a few seasons. The other option I have is heated buckets that I plug in. Those work really well but for a big one they can be pretty pricey but I've had mine for over 6 years now. I have a heated dog dish for our dog and cats. Congratulations to your son on his engagement!

Congratulations on your engagement Nick and Emily, how sweet! Very pretty ring Emily. The pigs seem to like their new drinking set up. Great fix Todd.

If the pigs get dehydrated you may want to make them bran mashes with some goodies ( carrots or something nice ) with electrolytes. The electrolytes encourage them to drink more too. Also don’t be surprised if they take a bath in that tub...😆.

That's what I was thinking, that they'd want to lay in it. Y'know, thanks for the hot tub :)

Best wishes to your son and his fiancee. If you timer allows I suggest running one hour in 3 or 4. It will keep the ice off without overheating the water. Wonder if the pigs have moved their toilet to somewhere closer to the warm bedding in the cold weather?

It took several months for my friend to get her horse to drink out of the tank again after it was shorting out. That’s the problem we usually have with water heaters and what I would still watch with yours. I’m not familiar with that type but my dad has said when they’re too hot it’s not good. Maybe yours is meant for more gallons of water though? Good luck! Smart pigs!

They make a thermostatic control you plug in line with the power cord. You plug in the module and drop the temp sensor into the water and set the temp range you want the water at. Saves energy too. Inkbird makes one available on amazon.

You aren't getting that cold at night (at least from my looking at your forecast). How about an open trough, and put a submerged circulation pump in it (like what you would put into a fountain). We use that in Northern NV were we get really cold and it keeps things open unless we get into the low teens, and then we just go out and break ice each morning.

Your heater may have a small short . Please check the water when it is on . Pigs can detect the smallest amount of electricity. I have had them fail . I could put my had in the water with it on but my horses where getting shocked. I don’t use any Electric heaters anymore.

  • @1870s

It definitely sinks on it's own. The heater is heavy enough to weigh down the wood without issue.
