    So sorry to hear about your piccolo! The great thing about being a flute player is there are always people willing to lend you a picc at a moment's notice. My picc is silver. I played a wood one once, lent to me by a pro in my states symphony orchestra while mine was in the shop. OMG it was so easy to play, also ! I would love to have a wood piccolo! I hope you find the right piccolo at FCNY! I bought from and take my professional flute to them, and they are great! Can't wait to see what you choose!

    I guess this is why I like the idea of metal versus wood. Metal bends, and wood cracks. One being more fixable versus the other. I guess if I won the lottery I'd definitely like to own some wood flutes or piccolos seeing how much high quality wood instruments cost. My father was a guitarist and he was always concerned with humidity levels in his practice room. Some of his guitars were Gibsons one of which was an L5 which was one of his most expensive instruments. He was mainly interested in Jazz and Classical.

    I've been where you are. My first piccolo, one of those all metal Gemeinhardts, was a victim of the 2004 Rose Parade. The one I'm playing right now, a Gemeinhardt 4P is developing a good sized crack in the headjoint. I'm trying to ride this picc out for as long as I can because I honestly can't afford a replacement right now, especially since my next piccolo is going to be a better horn than the others ever were.

    Ahh this reminds me of my schools piccolo that I would play on. Well I mean it was a great instrument but, it actually died. I accidentally sat on it by handing a stand to my friend in the row behind me. In doing so my body lowered & I sat on the piccolo. It literally split in half. It was a composite piccolo. So now I use my metal one that I got off of ebay. I've learned to make it sound decent but it has some of the same problems that yours has such as the key sticking when playing B flat. I hate that so much. But Im able to deal with it in the meantime. Hopefully I don't hold onto it so long as you did until it gets to that breaking point.

  • @JustAnotherFlutist

    @JustAnotherFlutist

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, definitely don't hold onto it as long as I did. Can you see if a repair technician would be willing to fix yours? I only had this happen because my piccolo was recalled. It might be cheaper for you to fix/maybe overhaul yours than to get a new one. At the very least, it would be worth it to get an estimate, so you know what you're working with. :)

    My clarinet cracked last summer...a LeBlanc Esprit my parents bought me my senior year if high school. It wasn't the one I wanted, but my parents knew nothing about buying instruments (like maybe take the person who will be playing it with you before you buy it). So I used it through being a clarinet performance major, then a wind ensemble player, then for several years of chamber music workshops. Finally the upper joint cracked 13 years after purchase. Someday I'll get a new (probably used) clarinet but now I'm using this as an opportunity to save up for a bass clarinet (and to just play trumpet, my other instrument, the one I secretly like better but nobody would ask me to play it because I was a clarinet major).

    Great plan, I totally understand. My family could only afford a used closed-hole, C-foot silver flute because it was the only flute at that time they we could afford that wasn't a silver-plated flute. That little guy took me straight into music school, even though the headjoint wasn't the right cut for me at all. We still have to appreciate them for what they are, even if they don't fit us well. 😊

    I also have a question and it would help if you answered. How do keep an F at pp? I tend to always drop an octave lower to the low f at that dynamic.

  • @JustAnotherFlutist

    @JustAnotherFlutist

    6 жыл бұрын

    I'm going to guess it has something to do with how your instrument likes to play that certain note. Do you know where in your mouth it likes to be placed? You may be subconsciously moving that note to another place in my your mouth when you play pp, which would cause it to crack (in your case, lower). I tend to suggest angling the air stream way higher and increasing the air pressure from your air stream a lot (while you make your embouchure very tiny) as a starting point. :)

    r.i.p piccolo, r.i.p. This isn't about the video but i have a question about what i should get for an intermediate flute. I currently have a used Yamaha 225Sii but i am trying to look into intermediate flutes for the future. What brands and models would you recommend? I have been looking into Di Zhao and Pearl flutes (i love the sound of Pearls)

    Hi! I'm finding/trying to find a flute to buy, so I do have some questions if you're willing to answer! I'll be grateful. What are some of the top brands for flutes? Are Sterling silver flutes better than soild silver or does it barely make a difference? So I've watched one of your previous videos and I saw that you have a rose gold flute. What are the benefits of gold or rose gold flutes?

  • @JustAnotherFlutist

    @JustAnotherFlutist

    6 жыл бұрын

    Here to answer! 1) Honestly, if you just look at the list of brands on the FCNY website, those are the ones I would suggest ;) 2) Sterling silver _is_ solid silver. But there are differences between Sterling (.925 silver) and Brittania (.958 silver). Brittania silver is definitely darker than the Sterling, so it really depends on your preference. 3) I got rose gold because it was cheaper than getting yellow gold. :P As it turns out, I find that yellow gold is almost a little _too_ mellow for me, and rose gold fits the exact sound I want: mellow and blending most of the time, but you can get it to stick out like a solo flute when you want to. :)

    My first piccolo was a Bundy I call "Al"...because it's a Bundy and it doesn't want to work lol I was putting it away after a rehearsal and the body actually came apart in two pieces...The silver "cap" with the cork popped right off and was stuck inside the head joint. I wasn't using the piccolo that often because at the time I was the only flutist but last year I replaced Al with Jenny, a Jupiter JPC1000 (They changed the model number since I bought it). Jenny works a lot better than Al ever did and I get to use it more often since now we have three in our section. :D

    Heart stopping was when Al took a nose-dive off of a stand and landed on his head on a concrete floor. After that I would say he was brain damaged :D I was able to temporarily glue the part back on but he never did play the same...and just like yours I couldn't get anything higher than a D.

    Nooooooooo :( I've heard mentions that it may have something to do with the head cork (shrinking or something, which makes it difficult for the high notes to ring). However, I just don't think the repair is worth it on my piccolo, since there is a very real possibility for a terrible accident to happen (i.e. someone knocking into me and me dropping the piccolo). I feel like I've ridden my luck out almost a bit too long, and I'd rather tuck him under my bed where he'll be safe, even if he's in need of repair. :(

    Oh nooooo! Requiescat in pacem, Joanna's Piccolo. 😢 On the topic of piccolos though, can you get different woods in the states? Because in Vienna you can get of course grenadilla wood, but also boxwood (I believe it's boxwood, but Idk, it's a really light wood) and Palisander, which is coconut wood. I was wondering if you could review flutes or piccolos with all of these different woods, because I'm really interested in the sound of them. Also were you playing Chinese music? It kinda sounds like it. Very beautiful, exactly the type of music I like!

It sounds very peaceful, like a river flowing through a valley, with the wind rustling through the leaves & it made me feel like I just wanted to close my eyes and let the sun warm my face. And eventually float toward the sky because of the bliss. :D That's exactly the sort of music that hits home because I live in the countryside.

    OMG... I was gonna comment on the Asian-sounding thing. Your original pic showed that much more quality. The borrowed pic didn't show that as much, so I figured it was more of a leak or something and it wasn't an intended effect. But sorry to hear about your pic giving up the ghost. I remember ages ago when my nickel student flute had to go. It was more a padding issue. Got a silver head to replace it, but I still felt lost as I was soooo used to my nickel flute... The excitement of the new one makes up for it, sure, but it still sucks a little when your friend goes away...

    I wonder if the tuning cork has shrunk. This might cause the headjoint to not ring well (Especially in the upper registers). I'm not saying "Don't buy a new one", you're probably in need of a better piccolo. From a musicians pocketbook prospective, if it's an easy fix (like replacing the tuning cork) it may help pay for the new Piccolo. Just a thought.

That's awesome that you don't have to travel constantly with the ES. I know there are symphonies in Alaska that would make their players travel. I also know that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is constantly traveling. That's also why I was wondering if the same would be for the ES.

    Well my clarinet died numerous times soooo... um yeah I am a very responsible parent. The first time it lost its soul is when I dropped it from the auditorium stares becuse of people pushing to get off. It broke a key so I couldn't play a note. Then the second time was very recent I started playing with it then I dropped it then the mouth piece chipped then I had to pay for it. I am still a student and the clarinet was not mine so i had to tell the teacher and that was scary but the teacher did not get mad so thank God. She also sent an email to my parents not to get made at me. Yeah I still have a lot to learn about instrument care. I am also so sorry that your piccalo died hope you get a better one bye!
