Since it keeps coming up, the ASUS BIOS doesn't 'detect' certain changes when saving and quitting - In this case, anything in the "AMD CBS" menu, which is where C-State control lives on this board. The changes were indeed saved. ASUS, if you're reading this, please fix this. It's the one thing I don't like about your firmware. -AY

Can I work in it with a keyboard and mouse, or better just one of the two if needed? Then don`t "fix" it. Whenever you change such a tool just for looks you risk breaking it. And breaking the tool that is supposed to help you unbreak stuff is kinda dumb.

microsoft usualy dont upgrade or get rid of things that somehow works. Those three is notepad, event viewer and paint.

This was posted a year ago but I started having this exact issue and it's been driving me crazy trying to figure out what's wrong. Thank God for Anthony.

Both of my AMD systems on the x570 platform have this random shutdown issue. Disabling the C state indeed solved the random power-off issue. Thanks a lot!!!

Inacceptable for computer hardware. I've never had such instability on my system since I set up computer about 20 years ago.

That is by itself quite impossible. Each of those individual things can have many, many error codes, which by themselves each can have many different causes and fixes. Guess you could start to learn how to read the windows event log and go from there, but be prepared to dive deep on the technical stuff.

3.0, the first actual decent version of Windows. 1 and 2 were crap. 3.0 was good but not much driver support, fixed when 3.1 came out. Win 2000 is still my favorite but 3.11 was decent as well, using DR DOS instead of MS Dos. I hated 95 and 98 and the 16 IRQ limit sucked for gamers and power users running multiple modems and scanners/printers. Win 2000 fixed that with 256 IRQs and I loved it for that reason.

When someone like Linus calls someone else to troubleshoot his computer you know he is a genius. I really like Anthony seems like a really humble guy

It's still a challenge. The thing that helps in diagnosing problems is repeatability. Or in other words "it only works correctly on the bench".

I had this exact issue with my computer! I had built a PC about 5 years ago. About 3 years after creation it randomly start doing shutting down for a second and turning right back on. It would not matter on what I was doing, watching videos, playing video games, researching topics, sitting ideal. Took it to multiple tech/computer repair places, no one could diagnose my problem as they could not replicate it so they didn't know where to even look, later found out they just cleaned my pc with compressed air and called it a day..... I decided to start researching the problem and trying to fix it myself by replacing every component in my computer. Figured must be a power issue since it will shut down then come right back on, replaced. Nope can't be that, then figured okay maybe my graphics card is getting too hot, replaced that. Same outcome, maybe my liquid cooler isn't cooling the CPU enough, replaced. Same problem, okay well maybe its my motherboard, maybe its got a short somewhere and that's what's causing it, replaced. Nope, long shot but maybe somehow, somewhere my case is causing a static shock to my motherboard, replaced it. Same issue. Okay well at this point it has to either be my CPU or my RAM. Replaced CPU, same issue. Finally made the "right" discission and just built a brand new one.

The clip for the data cable to my hard drive just stopped working out of the blue. I have no idea why. day 1 it was fine, the next day went to log into work and...FUCK!! the computer no happy!! thankfully that was easy. even in professional IT depts, only maybe 20% or less are as skilled and competent as Anthony. (that's my experience in over 20yrs in tech support, being in that small 20% group) The percentage of that 20% who are as articulate as Anthony is even less.

@@eric-. When i was taking my CompTIA class at my vocational school, my IT teacher was just a wiz. Knew everything and was able to help with hands on. But he was horrible at explaining things. He tried to help explain to me what VLANs are and how they work but I was lsot. As soon as he created a hands on project for me to do with VLANs, I understood it very well. So I've some people who are more teaching oriented need to give a more hands on approach and let the lesson and objectives explain themselves and he be there to guide us. I wish I knew more IT guys who are as articulate as Anthony. I know some peopel who are so much better than me (cuz I'm not the greatest obviuosly) who can get tasks done left and right but can't explain what they're doing for crap.

only about 5-10 percent of people in operational IT teams are great at their job. They know and use industry best practices and sometimes even invent new ones. The next 25 to 30 percent know the best practices exist but struggle to adopt them. The remaining majority of working IT people don't even know operational best practices exist.

thank you guys sooooo much for this video, i was having a similar issue with my system randomly shutting off and i found the issue instantly with event viewer, it was absolutely driving me nuts thanks again from a long time sub and fan!!

After a year long troubleshooting and even a RMA this fixed the restarts/blue screens I was getting on a R9 5900x with B550. Thanks Anthony.

More videos like this please. It feels like just hanging out with someone while they work on the computer, so they share a lot of extra information on the way, and all of it is helpful, and wouldn't come up otherwise. It's like sharing experience. Thanks guys! Enjoy your vacation, Linus!

This was a super succinct but also technically detailed guide. 3) I love that LMG can turn a broken office computer into content and revenue, whether or not this was staged (I am choosing to believe this wasn't staged and will ignore evidence to the contrary).

About 3), i'm going to say that it probably originated from a real issue, that the crew realised it could be turned into a good video while troubleshooting. So it's only half staged, for the purpose of filming and production quality.

Thanks Anthony for this video. Helped me out as I was experiencing the same issue. I saw ACPI in my event viewer and have turned off C States. So far, so good. 😊

Its important to know disabling c states disables some power management features and causes windows to consume much more power when idle

He's the kinda support guy we all wish we had. Knowledgeable about the subjects and he keeps you from getting upset because he's so damn calming and you just can't get mad at him.

I love the more frequent Anthony videos. The general direction of the channel with Linus slowly stepping back is good. I like how the different hosts are kind of falling into their own niches. Sadly no one (probably) will be another Linus, but having different hosts, more often than not, doing videos in their own area of expertise or passion really keeps that same knowledgeable and energetic vibe.

Keep in mind that they do have a team of writers behind the scenes though often the hosts (especially Linus) will request some changes, but in theory hiring hosts to replace Linus is not all that crazy

This was one of his worst videos idk this was very unlike Anthony too. This isn't even linux so it's not Anthony's specialty, and while he's great at most stuff, Windows troubleshooting tends to be an occam's razor thing instead of a 'okay let's check the registry log and dlls loaded and then go check the wiring in the walls' and more like 'the bios update bricked it dude' Not Anthony's fault, the problem given was an unexplained boring one that was unsuited to a video nor did it really help anyone here (lots of people now have the wrong idea about power savings settings imo), but this episode was really poorly written in general. Seemed very rushed. Saying the problem is *shrug* fixed doesn't mean shit. Create a repeatable situation and then solve it. This was just 'fiddle with pc and then teach ppl about event viewer' which doesn't help anyone ngl. It's also an AMD only suggestion since C1E/EIST in intel based BIOS works completely differently

Thanks for this. I spend quite a bit of time dealing with Random Issues for customers, including random shut-downs and reboots. I didn't know about the possible C-State issues and will check that in my future troubleshooting adventures. Great video!

I cant imagine LMG without Anthony. His techsupport backbone and super calm aproach about things that normal people understands as whitenoise is fantastic. We love you big fella!

The "He's just techy Michael Scott" on the wall is absolutely incredible.

This genuinely helped me, I was in a very similar situation, I went to check the event logger and saw a kernel error for a HID device. I'm guessing that's my DualSense controller and/or the Bluetooth dongle. I'll keep an eye on my PC to see if it worked. Awesome video!

Had this exact problem for months two years ago, can’t believe Linus made an entire video about it LOL

I haven't watched the whole video yet, I've had the same issue with my Asus Z690 Extreme where it randomly shuts down on idle, and it turned out to be a USB issue according to the Windows LiveKernelReports dump files. Fiddling around with the USB inputs, moving them around etc. seems to have fixed the problem.

Had a USB issue before that the connected device would cause system hangs. USB can be finicky, simply removing the device or trying different ports can work nicely as you did. Good job on the self trouble shooting :)

@@Alyzah Not in all cases. Depending on what peripherals or accessories you're trying to use, some things work better in USB 2.0 ports than USB 3.x, and vice versa. There's a multitude of potential compatibility issues when using devices, cables, and ports, across differing USB generations.

Bruh, the way you were sitting at one point I thought you were missing an arm, and I felt really bad for you. Like I know we have 2 so losing one isn't a huge deal, but I bet it would really suck. So when you turned later and I saw you had 2 arms I felt much better. So thanks for turning dude!

It's worth noting that since he is overclocking and updated his bios the offsets that are saved may be incorrect internally, even if they are displaying correctly, this would potentially also lead to ACPI events. This can often be fixed by doing some action that causes the values to be rewritten, and thus updated.

I've had issues with bad ram timings after an BIOS update. I think it's always best to reset all settings and start fresh when you upgrade the BIOS.

@@flowerdealer also you shouldn't really have any expectations of being able to overclock your CPU. If it runs at stock speeds without shutoffs, it's not broken. As soon as you overclock even slightly you risk having random shutoffs. Honestly given it's a work PC, even though it's LTT, I'm surprised that it is overclocked. I think this video is actually bad advice on these grounds. The first thing you should do is turn off the overclock if you are having random shutdowns.

@@asitisrequiredasitisrequir3411 In the frame of this video though, the problem only existed after a bios update - it's clearly been overclocked beforehand and caused no issues. Obviously a BIOS update could definitely mess up the overclock settings, but as long as you're sticking with safe parameters, overclocking is safe and should not be causing any issues unless you're really cranking the max out of your CPU. Anecdotal evidence but i've had my 3.4Ghz i5 OCed to 4Ghz for years and have had zero issues with it.

Yes, one thing they didn't talk about, was the part where updating the BIOS may have partially caused the issue. If he updated, then didn't reset the BIOS to defaults, then reload his settings, it could be there were some settings from the old BIOS which were upsetting the new BIOS. I've had issues like that after BIOS updates, where there can be a LOT of quirky behaviour, but reset the BIOS settings, then redo all your settings, and its usually fine afterwards. I suspect that some updates change the locations that they store info, and if old settings are in there, it can effect the new BIOS programming, with unexpected results. So the TL;DR is, if you've updated your BIOS, reset the settings to defaults, then re-enter your settings, and that can avoid issues like this.

This is why I feel people should reset the bios to default settings after a firmware update and reset everything to your liking.

I loved this. I love any 10+ minute sit downs with Anthony. I'd watch a whole different side channel of just tech deep dives with Anthony.

I'm going through that right now, it turns out I have some bent motherboard pins... I tried changing thermal paste, but it was just a temporary fix. Also, I noticed that my 3.3V rail is only at 2.8V, and 12V is at 11.5V, so it may be a factor as well

Holy cow! Thank you so much for making this video! My desktop computer had been shutting off like this for over a year, every day or two. Not powering down, not hibernating or sleeping, not rebooting, not blue screening. It was just suddenly shutting off, like the power was interupted. And as best I could tell, nothing was overheating. I didn't have ACPI configuration settings available to me in the BIOS, but in Windows 11, under Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Edit Plan Settings, I clicked "Change advanced power settings". In the Power Options dialog, the "Processor power managment > Minimum processor state" was set to 5%. I changed this to 80% a week ago, and my computer hasn't shut off since!!! Knock on wood, I think this fixed the issue!

This is a fantastic video, well done Anthony. You can really spot somebodies skill by watching how they troubleshoot. Do their steps make sense, can they reinterpret information as the bug-hunting continues? Do they have an idea of what they'll look at next if their present step doesn't yield results? Do they pigeonhole in and waste a lot of time on the first thing they find? Anthony is seasoned pro, you can tell.

Given the bios had originally been tweaked to push the processor, a bios upgrade may have also modified these (and other ) settings back to a normal state, thus affecting the voltage settings.

Despite the turn off noise in the intro sounding like a CRT. My heart dropped a little when I thought my computer turned off 🤣🤣

Depends on the person using, whenever its a somewhat advanced user idling shutdown is almost always a bad voltage curve, like 99% of the times.

As an IT guy, tbh I think my first step would have been to disable overclocking and set all the BIOS settings back to default. Then again, no one should be overclocking the Dells in the office in the first place! A bit different of a scenario here. Also, this video gives a couple details I think could use more emphasis: 1. Can the issue be reproduced 2. Did the issue always occur or did it start at a certain point / after a certain action The answers to those questions are obvious in this case but the questions themselves are super important.

As I'm sure you remember, Linus said himself at the beginning of the video that it only started happening after a BIOS update. As a fellow IT guy, I'd say there's a more than reasonable possibility of this being the cause. Reverting the BIOS to the previous version (much like uninstalling a broken patch on a server) would be my first port of call.

@@mattcarlin2873 I had an issue with my asus board when updating the bios to a windows 11 compatible bios(10th gen intel) and the cpu was stuck in power save c states, so there is 100% some bios issue with asus motherboards, you can't actually downgrade the bios, you have to load it onto a usb and plug into a specific usb port that will auto load any bios image on the flash drive, this fixed my issue, and all the bios update is supposed to do is enable tpm2.0 by default.

If the BIOS update was bugged and known by Asus and assuming the board was still supported, the next revision could have the issue addressed.

@@emac3628 Yes, though if that was a priority, you could note down what settings were changed from defaults before resetting. The advantage there is you can very quickly confirm or rule out nonstandard BIOS settings as a cause. You could even do a binary search of all the changed BIOS settings to relatively quickly narrow down which setting it was, even if you knew nothing about intel power states.

Now this is legit tech tips. Would love to see more videos like this!

This is usually caused by "Power Supply Idle Control" setting in the bios for AMD CPUs. You should try that instead of disabling C-State altogether. That fixed the same issue for me.

What value should it be set at? it has 3 options: Auto, low and typical. When using the 1usmus power plan with zen2 cpus it's suggested to have it set at low. However I'm not not sure what's best for other cpus like zen3 or threadripper.

@@Psychx_ I have a Corsair CP-9020196-NA and I was still experiencing the restarts. You need to set it to Typical to fix it.

My PC had shut off randomly last month and I thought nothing of it, just started it back up and moved on. Then it happened tonight twice, thirty minutes apart. I didn't expect this video to help but as I was following along in the event viewer portion I came across the two instances of shutdown and right next to both I saw error alerts for a driver I didn't recognize. Turns out it was VirtualBox from when I was dabbling in it over a year ago. There is no way I would've thought to update that driver on my own, so thank you!

Anazing video, i think my system might have the same issue since last BIOS update. I will try the fix. Love Anthony explanations as well.

This was a great video! I've been in tech support for almost a decade now and I loved how Anthony talked through what he was doing systemically. This is a great video showing how to work through this situation, and how to interact with inquisitive customers who want to learn how to troubleshoot their own machines.

This may have just solved a problem my buddy is having. More of these tech support videos would be awesome.
