My Panasonic 3DO Story: Collection, Games, & Controllers

Ойындар

A somewhat forgotten console amongst the mainstream, the Panasonic REAL 3DO was a true visionary's console back in the early 90s. It promised to take gamers beyond the 2D worlds being offered by Sega and Nintendo at the time and offered a promising look at what would become the future of gaming. It seemingly had all the right ideas but fell well short of being, well, a game changer. This is my story and collection of 3DO games and peripherals from back in the day.

I remember seeing 3DO for the first time, being blown away by the graphics & presentation at the time, at my local game rental shop (RIP Gamemasters of NC). Then years later, post PS1-Saturn ownership, just got one off of Yahoo Auctions, and enjoying the unique library, even if some of the titles were superseded by a version on PS1/Saturn. Games like Twisted, Wolfenstein 3D (still my favorite port), Super SF2 Turbo, D, or guilty pleasures like Way of The Warrior, Cowboy Casino: Poker, Ultraman Powered, Sailor Moon or Yu Yu Hakusho. The combination of powerful hardware for the time & vast library of good, bad & bizzare titles (any of educational titles, Dennis Miller That's News to me!, The softcore porn 3do videos from Vivid 😳 etc) makes it a system, unlike any other imo.

It really is a system that is undeniably early 90s. The Alone in the Dark and Cyberia games just remind me of how much this tried to be a PC gaming setup but in console form at times. Even the games you mentioned like Wolfenstein were moved over. Really almost the first domino to fall that kicked off the 3D era at home. For better or worse.

FMV was so sexy for the whole year & a half that it was state of the art lol. This video had an extra sprinkling of passion and it made me happy. So well done. My 3DO story is very similar. I sold everything, my entire SNES collection which was over 200 CIB games and was just enough to get the console itself with no games for $600. The guys at Funcoland felt bad that I couldn't buy a game so they gave me every demo disc they had. And yes, later in life there was regret because I sold Hagane, Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, Dracula X, and expensive games like Earthbound for just a few dollars. However, I have no regrets because I had a great time with the 3DO and two others in middle school besides myself were the ONLY guys who had a 3DO. We called ourselves, "The Three Kings" because nobody had the console besides us. Almost 30 years later, I sold off almost my entire collection of systems and games but I kept all my Saturn and 3DO stuff. Too much nostalgia and history to sell it. Battle Sport, Spacehulk, and Wing Commander 3 are some excellent games. Thank you for sharing your story.

I’ve never been able to bring myself to sell it or any of the games either. It was just such a ridiculous thing to have obtained at the time. I’ve placed so much sentimental value on the thing that I could never get in return what it actually represents or means to me. It’s crazy, I know, but it’s definitely a hard earned console and a fun trip down memory lane. That’s awesome that you and your friends actually had one. Another friend in high school eventually bought one on close out and he and I swapped games from time to time. That was really the end of the systems life though.

Great story! Thanks for sharing. My super expensive game console purchase in 1991 was a Neo Geo Gold console for $649. The “Gold” version came with two games. I chose Fatal Fury and Burning Fight. I loved them both, though I know you don’t care for Burning Fight. The only cart I paid the full $200 retail price for was Fatal Fury 2 and I think it was worth every penny. I still have the console and its original box, as well as all the games I purchased. At one point, Electronics Boutique was clearing out their inventory and I picked up a bunch of games for $50 each. I built a controller for it using a Happ Competition joystick and buttons that I purchased from a local arcade distributor. I’ll never forget walking in there and seeing a dedicated Samurai Showdown 2 cabinet with the shattered glass artwork. I wasn’t worthy.

Star Control II spotted at 11:15, but 'never played.' In addition to the single-player campaign, this game has a separate module, 'Super Melee' where you can just engage in arcade-style PvP combat, either against a computer opponent, or better yet a friend. For either side you can make teams of ships and customize or configure the teams to balance play however you wish. If the campaign isn't your preferred type of game, maybe this mode would be worth a shot. :)

Despite never growing up with or even knowing about the 3DO until a few years ago, I still find this little gem of a console to be quite charming. The games have a decidedly 90's feel to them and since I was primarily a 90's kid the console and its library really resonate with me. Yes, even the crappy FMV stuff. I bought my 3DO in 2020 and have around 40 games for it. So far my favorite title is Escape from Monster Manor for its cheesy Halloween horror themes. Of course there's far better games that I own but Escape from Monster Manor was the game that made me want a 3DO. I'm still looking for a bunch of titles but I do have a number a heavy hitters so I'm more than satisfied with what I have right now. The 3DO, while far from perfect, is fairly underrated in my opinion but you have to have specific tastes in games to be able to enjoy the 3DO library. Others will just end up disappointed if they don't.

It indeed felt very 90s. So many of the games scream early 90s PC. Good call out on Monster Manor, I’m not sure I’ve ever played that. I’ll definitely check it out at some point. FMV games were pretty much all alike but I never seemed to get tired of new themes.

I had a 3DO back in the 90s, not at launch or anything, I bought it at FuncoLand for like 30 bucks when everybody was going crazy for Playstation and I couldnt afford a playstation LOL. I actually unfortunately sold my 3DO and all my games a few years back when I was heavily collecting for other consoles, and had no good way to upscale the 3DO anyway... I had an OSSC and couldn't connect 3DO to it since it only took RGB/Component. However as soon as I received my Retrotink 5X I immediately purchased a 3DO from Japan with the 240p switch that some of the Japanese FZ-1 models have.. Unfortunately laser is dying so it doesn't play backups, and I no longer have any official games, but I ordered a USB Loader for it from Belarus, so I'm very excited to get the ODE sometime in 2-3 weeks.. Can't wait to play all those games, I have so much nostalgia for it. I did test the 3do splash screen via SVideo on my 5x though and it looks amazing! For those who wanna play 3DO upscaled on a flatscreen, definitely recommend the Japanese model

The Adventures of Bayou Billy for the NES had different modes. There were beat 'em up levels and driving levels that you used the controller to play, and then there were shooting levels where you could either use the controller to aim the reticle, or use the zapper to shoot the bad guys.

Thanks for the great video. I bought into the hype too when I owned a game store in the 90s. We sold a few units and had a small 3DO game collection. Obviously they all needed 'testing' and I think your choice of NFS and Return Fire as your first top games is spot on. NFS, despite looking a little janky by today's standards, was miles ahead of the cart-based competition and its 3D 'hack' (you can't look backwards) created an incredible combination of speed and fidelity at the time. I don't know if you know but Return Fire was the sequel to an obscure game on the Amiga called Firepower, which I also played a bit of and it really is the scaling, occasional FMV and the stunning classical soundtrack that made the sequel stand out on 3DO. ** Carrying the enemy flag, racing down the road in your jeep, being chased by your friend in a helicopter while the William Tell Overture blasts from your TV is one of gaming's great moments **

  • @ScarletSprites

    @ScarletSprites

    3 жыл бұрын

I actually did not know that about Return Fire, thanks for sharing. NFS was pretty great at the time. I really thought that was the beginning of what was going to be a mound of games equally as great or at least in the same style. Not necessarily racing but actual video games and not simply PC ports, FMV heavy click titles, and such. I had so much optimism.

Regrettably, I sold a lot of my NES/SNES and Sega collections to be able to afford the Goldstar version of the 3DO. I had all of those games as well. Sadly, I also got rid of that system/library when the next new thing came out. I don’t really miss it that much, but it didn’t stop me from collecting all of those games all over again to play once in awhile on the 4DO emulator. Need for Speed was the best game to own on the 3DO at the time. I loved it so much, I bought two wheel/pedal controllers and I used to take them over to my friend’s house for some epic head-to-head battles. He couldn’t afford any game system (at the time). It drove his wife nuts to see two grown men in competitive mode. With all the excitement of a PSX and Saturn core coming, maybe someone will release a 3DO core for the MISTer as well?

In fact, to finance the Saturn in 95, my Genesis, Sega CD and the entire libraries of both (all CIB as well) got sold for pennies on the dollar. Spent most of my time playing a lot of the same games. Sadly sold my 3DO and all the games I had to buy a N64 only a few years later. Clearly a good choice all things considered at the time, but I have wanted to revisit the 3DO recently. Finding one in good condition now and tracking down some of these games might be a challenge.

For me it was the RetroTink 5X. The 3DO is one of a few consoles I don’t often have connected due to not having an HDMI option (also, lazy). When the 5X arrived it was the second console I tested it with and I’ve kept it hooked up ever since.

I had that same 3do back in the day and bought mine probably around the same time u did. It wasn't the best system ever but I had a little fun with it. Lol I remember really enjoying demolition man . Way of the warrior however is probably the worst game ever made. It didn't take me long to realize that I waisted my money on Way if the warrior lol

  • @ScarletSprites

Way of the Warrior was such a disappointment for something that was supposed to be an MK2 clone. The controls are just so sloppy on it and the gameplay is terrible. I forced myself to play it for a while and still would off and on, but it was crushing to see how much better fighters were on SNES.

My brother got a 3DO when it had come out, I mean yeah it was pretty cool when it came out but you look at it these days it's pretty disappointing. Fortunately my dad got me a Saturn instead which is in my opinion a far better console with a lot of gems that are exclusive to it

Saturn was definitely the better option. Hell, I love the arcade ports for the Saturn. If anything I should have been the primary target market for that thing. Panasonic just got to me first unfortunately.

No, that’s not it at all really. I thought I explained it well enough in the video but those games are original. They had to be played back in the 90s because there was no CD burning taking place at home. Today it’s a convenience thing.

You don’t have to understand it. It’s no different than baseball cards or even sports cars that enter shows. It’s all a form of art and if someone gets value out of displaying it as such so be it. Just because it CAN be played (or driven) doesn’t mean it has to be. Everyone gets a slightly different type of value out of the things they enjoy.

@@ScarletSprites If you are so inclined, there is a CD Rom emulation board that allows the 3DO to play ISO image backups from USB. 3do-mnemo.com/ Back to playing backups from discs, I have many hard to find originals for my PC-FX but play the burned backups as well. You are certainly not alone in that respect :)

Not really out of any dislike, that’s for sure. I loved the Sega arcade games it had. It was still a time where as a kid the ability to buy multiple consoles wasn’t really a reality yet. I eventually moved on to PlayStation and I did try to right the Saturn wrong by going all in on Dreamcast day one.
