【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

Aty used it eventually and Ui uses it now too. And it seems the pups at Loutre have started using it too. So, no doubt, at some point, Hana and Kotaro will also use it.
Hana's drive to eat overcomes her fear of the wheel. Hana finds strength in food!

Hana's usually the more daring of the two. I was impressed that she was getting used to the rotational movement more by the credit sequence.

Regardless of the cost of the wheel, I hope they use it for their health! And we absolutely love them and are proud of them if the thing sits and gathers dust! That Hana was a little dynamo on it! Lol💛🦦🦦💛💛
The noises they make are so cute. I never get tired of hearing them. The little cat fight took me by surprise. LOL. I'm sure once they get used to it. They will love it.

Be patient, let Hana & Kotaro get used to this big new thing before they start using it. They are both cautious but also very curious, intelligent & playful so give them time to learn to enjoy it. They will get there with your encouragement & love. I think that Hana has already lost some weight, it would be good to have an update on both otters diets & health, please let us see more of them playing together not squabbling over food. We all want to see happy healthy Hana & Kotaro running around & playing together for many more birthdays.

I think it’s a brilliant gift! And as you said, that’s how first days go. I think she will get used to it over time. I’ve watched people try to get cats used to those online and it takes them awhile too. They have to just slowly realize it won’t harm them. I think you were doing just right. Let them have some treats so they know there’s a reward but make them work for them too so they learn it’s not scary. Love it. As always.

1:22. Pretty cumbersome that thing in the house. But as I saw on Loutre's channel that she bought the same thing, the otters, once they have learned, they have fun. 😊 In the beginning they obviously don't have much confidence of that “moving carpet”. Who knows if Hana and Kotaro will use it.

I love this! They are so adorable and I loved todays commentary, Hanna upset about working for the treats while Professor K just lays around watching her. Such a cute little duo, with spunky personalities. Can’t wait to see how this turns out and if they get comfortable enough to use it.
