My Old Kentucky Home

Музыка

The conductor, Dr. John Flanery, completed both his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master's degrees in Choral Conducting from the University of Kentucky. Although the order of the verses and choruses may not be what the majority conception is, we performed the piece as the arranger intended his version of the song to be.
This is the Universty of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg Choral Union performing their April 2008 spring concert "American Spectacular.

I just had a notion to listen to this. Such a tug on the heart strings! So many of Foster's songs have a sad element to them.

Great song. Great chorus. Abysmal arrangement.

Beautiful...absolutely beautiful... That is the closest I have found to what what I sang in my high school choir, 15 or so years ago. Being from Kentucky, this song obviously hits home to me! :)

I also am from Kentucky. I moved away for several years. I appreciated the experience. I was reared in Mayville and have lived in Covington for the past 21 years. There is no place like "My Old Kentucky Home."

As of 2012, at least, when this song is sung at Churchill Downs, the first two verses are sung together before the chorus is sung. I would assume this is the "original" way it was written by Stephen Foster, though I can neither confirm nor deny this as fact. I am from New Albany, Indiana (right across the river from Louisville, KY), and even though I now live in Boston, MA -- EVERY derby day, no matter WHERE I am, I will sing this song. Gotten a few funny looks in the bar, sometimes.

I'm not sure what cdogslovergirl is talking about. I'm from Kentucky, also, and have sung in choirs (including the UK Chorale) since I could talk. The arrangement was fine. There is no "chorus" after the first verse. Great job!

Sorry to say the words have been changed of this song. Yes it may be offensive to some or even many but history cannot be erased. Even Paul Robeson used the original words when he sang this number. History cannot be thrown under the rug. You have done a disservice to beautiful music. By facing your past hopefully the future will be better. Lets hope.
