Looks similar to my backyard prairie restoration in southern MN. At last count I have 50 species of forbs and 10 species of grass in about 500 sq. ft of space. The world needs more people such as yourself who realize that a monoculture of sod isn't the only option. Thank you!

Fantastic stuff! I hope to do a restoration someday, but this year I'm taking a step by adding native garden. The plants will grow together as they do in a prairie, but I don't plan on adding grasses, at least not yet.

yeah the konza prairie which is a national park has a large buffalo herd (about 5,000)...most of the flint hills is privately owned by small cattle ranches...the quality of the native prairie grass is one of the reasons why the cattle drives went through this area on their way to the Abilene ks. rail head...the cattle industry is really the only reason that the native prairie survived because it has been so profitable in its natural state...

I want to do this in my yard and also at my mother’s house. I have the ground prepared already at my place.

Nice, thanks for responding like that! The Konza prairie. I'll tell you what I would love to visit it :-) The cattle info, thank you, it's so nice to hear from someone who appreciates the prairie. Thank you!

11 years late and im trying to do this with my backyard in Tulsa. I'm in the Osage Cuestas ecoregion so everything here should be a mix of tall grass prairie and oak-hickory forest

Greetings from Winnipeg- Looks nice. I've been working on my own tallgrass garden for a few years and love it (as does the wildlife in the area), but I'm working in a smaller space than you are. I hope to slowly convert my entire yard to native plants.

Excellent work! I wish more land owners would make serious efforts to Protect, Preserve, and Restore Locally Native Prairie Plants - to benefit all of the associated Wildlife! Thanks!

Please read "Bringing Nature Home" by Douglas W. Tallamy! I'd recommend that you try to locate your nearest "Wild Ones" chapter, and continue to add any locally Native species! Please consider increasing the total Diversity of species, Area of restoration, and Density of planting! (=GO "DAD!") Try to add Tradescantia spp.(Spiderworts), and Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) and Serviceberries,(Amelancheir spp)and Corylus americana, (Hazelnut!),and Cornus spp.(Dogwoods) all excellent for wildlife!

Wonderful. Thank you for making this available to everyone. Was it difficult to find the plants that you needed to complete your prairie restoration?

Why don't more people have something like this at home, instead of boring lawn? If I understand correctly, these need very little maintenance and grow from their own seeds. Prairie gardens have even become popular in Europe, and many of these flowers are common garden flowers. Why not keep them in a plant community, where they mostly maintain themselves?

European introduced plants now dominate here in Minnesota. Sometimes they create beautiful displays but it makes me sad the natives were destroyed.

Just watched this after seeing a segment about planting your own pocket prairie garden on Kare 11. Good job! Curious what this garden looks like 9 years later.

Primarily aesthetic reasons (it looks like an abandoned lot!), it's become so thick that many smaller plants (june grass, prairie smoke, pink onion...) are no longer visible. , but it's also spreading to the vegetable garden on the other side of the walk. Besides, it gives me a chance to re-locate some plants to the new beds in the front yard

eastern kansas...kansas has the majority of the remaining tall grass prairie located in a large strip in eastern kansas called the "flint hills"...the pioneers never plowed it because the soil was too rocky...you should google "flint hills" its a beautiful area of our country that most people dont know about...have a great day

If you are planting native prairie plants you do not need to worry about crabgrass (unless it is for esthetic reasons). Only a very few weeds are subject for concern and prairie plants will usually over power most weeds. If you want to send me a video response of what you've got I'd be happy to check it out :-)

I wonder how many other people are planting native prairie grass gardens to help out with pollination and butterflies. It's sad that we have to resort to doing this because the native habitats have been destroyed.

Thanks. Crabgrass has invaded my garden and I am in the process of digging up the garden and salvaging what I can. These plants are surprisingly resilient considering I have to strip them down to the bare roots to remove the crabgrass. I guess my only question at the moment is: how do I dig up crabgrass without swearing? LOL

would love to learn how you begin one of these restorations. I would like to do it on my property but not sure how exactly to go about it. Is simply casting the seed enough?? Thanks for the video and for your beautiful stewardship of nature :)
