My new sump for the 400g reef

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

After nine years, I decided I wanted to upgrade the sump under the 400g reef. I built it in 2010, and it has served me well. I wanted something somewhat different this time, with a built-in fan holder, spot dedicated to the Trident tester, a front view of the return zone, and a way to run a sock (or the ClariSea) on demand.
Since I build custom sumps for a living, I wanted to make myself something nice using the CNC machine and applying my current techniques for gluing - which have improved over the years.
This sump measures 58" long x 31" wide x 17" tall, and has a large refugium zone in the front. I run an internal pump for the return, the Abyzz 200a. I run a Vectra L1 externally to feed the Anemone Cube and the manifold.
This video shows some of the breakdown. The entire change over from old to new took 15 hours to accomplish. Big thanks to Shane and Gabriel for coming over to help with some of the heavy stuff, and for filming part of the process.
All the plumbing was redone with specific needs, and the final product looks clean and sleek, plus it's nice and quiet too. I'm really happy with how it all worked out, and the best part is the reef didn't skip a beat.

    Gotta say that filter sock box you did was pretty slick. I was going to go with colored PVC on my newest build... but at the last minute my cheapness gene popped in. Figured $15 for a 4' section of PVC, or $2 for a 10' piece... ignore how much I spent on the tank to date I probably saved $100 on pipe alone :D

    Yeah, I could have replumbed a lot of it for less money, but I prefer the better fittings (the unions and gate valves you saw) and I've really liked the black PVC I've had so I decided to just do it again. :)

  • @Mike__B

    @Mike__B

    @@melevsreef Oh I agree, I went with home depot pvc, with home depot unions and home depot screw in fittings. I did that for two reasons beyond my cheapness gene. First I like the idea of buying a ton of parts so I make sure I have what I need without rushing to the store just like you did, but then I return what I don't use later which I don't know how viable that is when you order online. Second, and more importantly the sump I put it was a cheap DIY jobber that I just had to get in so I can get my skimmer and everything in to move my existing fish over. (It was kind of an pseudo emergency move) And I knew that the placement of where the pipes would go to the sump would be different and I'd had to cut and modify them in some way, but I had no idea which way. So didn't want to pay for premium plumbing parts if I was going to cut them out anyways at a later date and replumb it all. But I'm fully anticipating chopping out the older stuff and replace it with nicer new stuff.

A lot of people (like me) don't want to use socks (except for Lanthanum Cl) and many others would rather use filter sponge. So well done - so professional ;)

    Really nice set up , I enjoy watching your videos. I have a question for you; How long does the silicone last on these tanks ? No wone seems to want to answer... Is clear better than black? I've been a reefer since 92 lol If you wanna read my set up : My tank is a lab type set up 180gl Marineland with 70gl custom sump. Acro dominant/acan/zooz Mixed reef with 10 fish. 3x Kessil a360x/controller with 4x t5 lighting. My custom sump is very different. I dose Nopox so I have no Fuge and I've been dosing bubbles for years, so no baffles. 2 return pumps 4 constant drains, no emergency drains. 4x7 inch socks in two separate compartments. Tunze 9430 skimmer in a large 50gl center compartment. with 2 WAV pumps in the sump creating a storm of flow at 100% power. the tank is in the basement so I don't care about the noise. (Kind of loosing my hearing anyway lol.) My sump is very turbulent water so it's always clean. I use to have the Tunze calcium reactor but I went back to the balling method. Better growth and color Imo. And I also dose Kalk to keep my ph nice and high. Parameters : I got a lot of time on my hands /an annoying wife lol. KH 11.2 to 11.5 (AF test every day) CA 460 to 465 (Salifert - AF test once a week) Mg 1410 (AF test once a week) No3 1 (AF test once a week) Po4 0 (tested every other day with the Hanna Phosphorus ULR it reads in parts per billion) STR 22 (Salifert tested twice a week) K 420 (Salifert tested twice a week) PH 8.3 /night to around 8.5 /day (monitored by 2 blue plastic Ph probes on my Apex and 1 Glass Ph probe on my Tunze 7000 smart controller) No need for heaters but I do have a chiller hooked up at 77° I do 1X30gl water change every sunday. Enjoy!

    great video as always, great sump. Thank you for sharing the build with us. One question though, wouldnt it be a good idea to install a ball valve on the main drain, before the gate valve? That way you can cut it off and send water to the filter box without disturbing the fine adjustment of the gate valve? Just asking because i plan on stealing some of your ideas into my next build, Yeah.. im one of those idea stealers....

  • @melevsreef

    @melevsreef

    5 жыл бұрын

    I don't think it's necessary - you'll learn the sweet spot, and be able to find it pretty quickly. Plus another valve would add some internal resistance/restriction. Another idea would be to stick a tall PVC pipe in the overflow box in the main drain's hole (bulkhead) that would quickly stop flow down that drainline, and water would then go out the emergency drains. Cheap fix, just need a pipe about 8" tall (in my particular overflow). Then like you said, I wouldn't need to touch the red valve.

    Awesome.. Wish I lived near u or visa versa. I designed my sump using a 40 breeder. Came out pretty clean with the glass baffles which I had my hardware cut for me. My only issue is my two returns house once inch drains left and right. Apparently there way to small to handle the new ecotech Vectra m2. So I have to calibrate it per ecotech. Reason right now using jebao DCT8000 which failed 3xs. Fortunately I am home healing up from emergency surgery. Even after removing and cleaning with vinegar seems it's destined to fail again. Already have the return plumbing glued just have to put it in place. ? Are the Vectra easy to calibrate as everyone says. Another issue I had to add another 15 lbs of live sand which is causing brown algae again on my Rick scape,is that normal. Seems to be a silicate issue so I installed a high rejection silicate to membrane along with an additional extra DI cartridge. Happy Reefing 😎

    With all this automation more and more available to us, I find myself being very selective about what I want to automate as I find it disconnects me from the tank. Here's a long story for you. Back in 2005 someone asked me for a proposal to commemorate the 5 years of an art contest. I didn't have a fish tank at that time but I wanted one so I came up with the idea of renting them a 250 gallon tank with african cichlids and holograms of the previous winners. I got the tank and the over 20 adult fish 3 days before the opening of the exhibition and of course I had an ammonia and nitrite spike. So every night after the museum closed I went there and did 50-60% water changes. The problem was that I had to carry buckets up and down the stairs over a 100+ meters path. This lasted for 4 weeks. When the exhibition was over, I finally brought my dream tank to my office. I finished setting it up around 5 AM and then when home to sleep (I lived in the same building, 3 floors up). Around 10 AM I woke up in panic. I knew the tank had exploded and that the fish were dying. I was so terrified that it didn't occur to me to ask how the heck did I know it. I was putting my clothes on when a colleague entered my apartment (I had a copy of my keys in the office) shouting that the tank had exploded. We went down and we managed to pick almost all the fish. The way I see this is that I somehow created a strong connection with those animals by putting so much effort to make sure they survived. This is an extreme example but I think my point is that the work we put in our tanks may have a psychological impact in the way we appreciate them. So, I try to not automate too much.
