My New Fridge Is BUILT DIFFERENT | EcoFlow Glacier for Overlanders

Ғылым және технология

Is the EcoFlow Glacier fridge practical and relevant for 4X4 overlanders?

Note: if you plan to use the DC converter only for the Glacier (up to 240W), the cheap MGGi is sufficient. But if you also plan to use it at higher power like charging a large power station, I recommend the Victron with active fan cooling. In either case, a properly configured XT60i cable is required. For all reasons why, watch the DC converter video.

Great job on the videos. You present these things in a smart, direct and fun way. I rarely feel like I need a freezer and have stuck with my 50qt ARB, but the ice maker is pretty sweet. Being able to have a cold drink without storing the drink in the fridge at all would be pretty nice.

Thankfully in UK the eggs 🥚 do not need to be kept in a fridge, even during summer🌞 In US they chemically treat and wash the eggs so that the natural protective 🐚 shell full protection is lost and causes the eggs to become poros.

We have a national Luna weekender twin. It is 48l with a single compressor. It’s not dual zone but if you set the temp as a fridge the small compartment works as a freezer. It works perfectly. We’ve had it for 12 years and used it for 42 countries of overlanding. This built in battery is pretty cool though.

Hah, my reason for preferring no ice is to get more of the beverage I paid for, rather than frozen water. Good review as always. The built-in battery is appealing especially if the fridge also has a USB port or two. But I am hoping the Dometic fridge and PLB40 battery I have last a long time so it’s just academic for me.

I really like my Delta 2Max. Holds a lot of energy. Glacier is great too. Haven’t gone camping with it, but I have done all the stays at a public park within 30 minutes. Nice not having to leave to get food or cold beverage. And I really like it for going to my “local” farmer for dairy and beef runs. Also going to nearby grocery store, especially in the summer. Heck I can go to a grocery store an hour away and not worry about needing to rush on back down the highway. I almost feel like I’m at home in my minivan.

  • @rtepic

The vacuum insulation was the coolest part. I was nerding out VIPs when I learned about them a while ago, They're still a delicate and niche technology, but I can see them being super useful in overlander / van dwelling designs. Imagine something like a monolithic fiberglass box like earth cruiser uses, but with VIPs through out. The efficiencies approaching passive house levels could vastly simplify and or expand where your adventures can happen. Personally, as someone who lives where it gets super hot, I appreciate air conditioning. Which is harder to add, let alone maintain in a rig.

After 5 years our Dometic thermistor needs replacing which seems quite common in Dometics. It is taking us months to get the part - whilst our ice-buying cooler season goes by. It is also hard to locate the part which is unfortunate for Dometic’s brand reputation - I thought they were offering a more solid product/service. Their email reply with parts list did not even include the part we actually need.

Anker Everfrost seems like a solid option too if you don't care about ice maker. The built in wheel and handle is nice comparing to paying extra for the ecoflow. However removable divider on the ecoflow to make it one big single zone is very nice. And like you said size is an issue with anker being 53L as the only dual zone option.

Great presentation. I will definitely look into this setup because I can hook it up in the back seat so I can reach from my driver seat. What an awesome presentation of thermodynamics in ways most can relate in a refrigeration system... from making Energy = Power x time look so cool to benchmarking with thermogram no less for validating the relative superiority in the R15 for your EcoFlow vs R5 for Dometic... with nuances involving wall thickness and cooling rate (time). Can you deactivate the ice-maker with a switch so that compartment can be used to store/cool liquid packs? I love the ice-maker feature though.

The ice maker is always deactivated and not cooled. It is not constantly making more ice like some home units. This is more of an instant ice maker. Push a button to make 1 batch type of deal.

I bought my first 12V portable fridge off Amazon, it was only like $250. Its one of those Chinese non name brand, way cheaper than Dometic and other name brand fridges, but works just as good. Mine is a dual zone fridge. Apparently mine use to have an optional battery, but the battery itself was no longer available at time of purchase. I bought it for Burning Man and it worked great with a power station that I borrowed from a friend, so I still need to get a battery power station one day soon.

I really like it but when comparing to the Iceco VL60 dual zone. It seems that the Iceco is a better deal. The Iceco has 2 lids so the frozen side can stay closed most of the time, it’s just barely bigger. Mostly the width actually. It’s about 4” wider but the rest of the dimensions are about 1” bigger all around. Which isn’t much. Also the price. The eco flow is $1000 based on link. The iceco is $850 and usually there’s a 30% off sale on Black Friday which really makes it a better deal.
