    If I remember right, the final course for his engineering degree in Germany involved completely redesigning something from scratch. It could be anything, and he played guitar and decided to redesign the guitar, and decided to do metal for the body, and while he was putting the design together, he put the pickups over the body where he thought they would go, and then realized that they stuck, and that's why the magnetic pickups are not permanently stuck to the body

  • @versoinstruments

    @versoinstruments

    Thanks for the wrapup! We don’t have to re design something from scratch, you just follow an idea and see where it gets you - but you’re right that pickup attachment just happened along the way! I started with a roof batten guitar just to show myself a body isn’t needed to make a good sounding guitar. That proofed, so I fooled around with textile materials for an ergonomic body and that led me to the sheetmetal shape ( wich almost looks like a textile we draped over a neck wich I liked a lot). The pickup attachment came as a byproduct of the sheetmetal and quickly became the main feature :) Sounds a bit random but sometimes things are just like that haha! And the development to the point of what you see here took me years (even after my degree in industrial design)

    my mind is blown. like I wasn’t totally sold on the value of moving the pickups at first, it felt more gimmicky than useful, but when you split high and low strings between left and right with different fx chains on each it was unbelievable. it feels like being able to record two completely separate guitar parts at once. and imagining the interplay in mixes with something like a more complicated lead melody trading off as if two people are playing, it’s just so creatively inspiring. (also the section at 18:30 reminds me a lot of Crumb, absolutely love it)

    16:35 Sounds like a blend of Flaming Lips and Stereolab. Or AIR. Then it drops into Jamie Lidell/STS9 territory. Great stuff! Btw I already got Transit before I watched this since I love anything with Andrew’s name on it. I get so many song starter ideas from your videos that it takes me forever to watch because I keep pausing and writing down ideas. You guys are awesome!

    8:17 instantly brought back TV and video games vibes. You’ve still got it. I can’t describe how happy these kinda videos make me.

    i'm always down on myself for lacking the focus or motivation to work on my own music. so whenever i see an upload from you, i'm hesitant to click because i don't want to be reminded that i'm not where i want to be. but then when i DO click, i'm always left happy, motivated, and inspired. keep rockin man

    im a big metalhead and i mean i love all kinds of music but ye mostly metal. and it's really interesting seeing people both play but more importantly, create different genres than metal. the thought process behind this session is far from how i would create music but it sounds awesome and it's alot of fun

    18:30 if there ever were a funky music video to this song, at this point I'd expect everything to melt into amorphous blobs like I have
