My New Eastern Newt Tank! How to Build an Aquatic Newt Enclosure

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Hey everyone, I'm finally back with another video! I've been working on a new enclosure for my Eastern newts and wanted to share this setup with everyone. After a little over a month of work, I'm quite happy with how it turned out and I'm sure the Eastern newts are just as happy! Check out the list below for some details on what I used for this setup:
-55 Gallon Aquarium
-Fluval LED plant light
Substrate:
-CaribSea Eco-Planted Aquarium substrate
-Fluval Stratum aquatic soil
Hardscape:
-Spiderwood
Aquatic plants:
-Lobelia cardinalis
-Ludwigia arcuata
-Frogbit
-American Pondweed
-Java moss
-Taiwanese moss

The moss on top looks awesome! I would love to see a full on paladarium setup where the newts could do their full life cycle from larvae to Eft to Adult all in one setup.

You my friend are an awesome inspiration. I used to keep Paddletail Newts and they were my pride and joy. I gave them a planted tank as well but without ferns and only one plant that carpeted the vivarium. to about six inches. I am trying to breed the Taricha granulosa (rough skin newt) as a conservation project because of what happened in the Pacific Northwest with all the Wildfires recently. Your videos are hypnotic, I really hope to see more. I live in South Jersey, well within the range of a few newt and salamander species but are very hard to find, because of pollution I'm assuming. However Eastern Newts have always interested me, and maybe one day I'll be fortunate enough to be able to breed these guys in the type of vivarium that you set up in this video. Thanks for your content, my dude. Have a great 2023.

I love eastern newts, I use to catch and release them all the time as a kid, they love the little ponds that form from little ground springs, it's cool and clean water and absolutely packed full of Eastern newts, I noticed the little ground spring ponds had some tannins from leaves, it didn't seem to hurt them but I was wondering if I could do that for my tank?

Thank you! The larvae is still in the enclosure with the adults. It's feeding on tiny organisms present within the setup. For a first time newt/salamander owner, I'd go with a Spanish ribbed newt or axolotl. They're both very popular, hardy animals and are relatively easy to keep.

Hi! Glad you enjoyed the tank build! Not sure if you know already, but this setup is meant for the aquatic adults only. The efts will drown in a setup like this since they are completely terrestrial until adulthood. On the subject of plants, Java moss and crystalwort are very hardy and easy plants.

Hey there! I don't have this setup anymore unfortunately -- my newts are in something much more modest at the moment. When I had this enclosure, I only did minimal water changes at the start, and never used any sort of filter. Just natural water evaporation and plant filtration - that was pretty much it. I would add water as needed.
