that’s pretty typical for the eldest children of filipino families honestly. he’s still got an opportunity to get a good education, and then get a well-paying job. since he’s a lot older than the rest he’ll be working first and they’ll rely on him for income. it’s just how it is sadly

Seeing Earl John trying to do his best in life amidst all his struggles reminds me to stop complaining and to try my best in life regardless of the results. Thanks for being a good example Earl John. You should teach your siblings Bisaya in exchange of them teaching you Korean because the Bisaya language is beautiful.

first of all a big praise to the grandmother, who raised alone such a loving boy ... This young man, who longs for love, security and family warmth, must serve these lazy and spoiled siblings and the cold mother, so that he no longer feels alone, gets recognition etc., very sad. That is the pain processing of this young man, he sacrifices and puts his wishes in the last place to get a piece of love and acceptance, whether they will ever thank him is another question :-(

Their family is so awkward to watch... But i can feel that he's really trying, it's just that it feels like he's fighting this alone, i hope his sisters are helping him learn korean faster rather than avoiding him because of language barrier. That would be for the best anyway. I kinda feel like they're looking down on him, i hope I'm wrong. If i had a brother like him, i would be really glad to help him feel comfortable and loved in our family. Besides, teaching your language to someone who needs it is fun!

It seems like the youngest was the only one who's a bit closer to earl john. Also, did grandma and uncle been there for three years too? If so I really think the kids didn't put much effort to be close with them. I know it might be super hard but I think 3 years is long enough to at least be a little more comfortable... I just hope they could make it work and be closer with each other before it,s too late

You can clearly see this is a filipino singing while doing farm or house chores. The mother should teach the other children responsibilities. Earl jhon was raise by a filipina grandmother which is strict but a loving grandparent. He has a big heart and he thinks of his siblings more than himself despite of the fact that hedidn't grow with a parent. All the best for this young man. We will pray for you.

  • @gisellepark7355

The mother should have put in more effort to teach her children Filipino culture and her native tongue (Bisaya). I am married to a Korean and my young son is being taught both Korean, Tagalog, and English. The younger you start teaching them languages, the better they will be as they get older. Right? Most importantly, I want him to know more about his other half because he IS absolutely Filipino from my blood. I don't want to generalize but a lot of Filipina's I know living in Korea, are just teaching Korean and English to their kids. They just say there is no use for Tagalog but... to me it just seems like you don't want your child to acknowledge his/her Filipino heritage. It was so sad and rude to see the other grandchildren ignoring their Lola. Puberty is not an excuse for being rude or not helping. Those kids would be labeled rude if they acted that way to their older Korean relatives.

I love how mostly Filipinos call their grandmothers 'Nanay' which literally means 'mother' because they made us feel like we are their child regardless of their age. They took care of us and understand us as if they're our mothers and they even spoils us way better than our own mothers sometimes😂.

Honestly I feel bad for him. He just came to korea and finally met his family but the moment he came, he right away started being treated as a houseworker. I know the mom is trying her best but she should try and to teach the younger siblings on how to help around instead of sitting there looking at social media and feeling bad cus they’re different, which they’re not (in a good way). I mean it’d be nice if they knew Tagalog so they can communicate with their brother but the mom never taught them :( And the mom should initiate and get the other kids to try talking to him and their grandma! I’m Vietnamese and my nieces don’t speak it and me and my sisters do, so whenever my mom tries to talk to them I end up translating for them but they at least try to communicate with my mom but it seems here they don’t even try and that’s sad :(

I'm half Korean/Filipino and my eldest brother is full Filipino so I can relate to this a lot. The language barrier is just too strong as well as the cultural differences. Although I grew up with my brother it's still awkward at times because we were raised too differently. I also believe when it comes to Filipino moms they usually don't teach their multicultural kids tagalog/vernacular because the kids will look better like that or something. I can't explain it well but my mom didn't want us to learn tagalog because we might get the accent and I know a lot of kids who are the same. Because of that it made it very hard for me to relate to my relatives growing up. Also I have a feeling those kids are kind of embarrassed of their Filipino culture because in Korea racism is no joke especially towards Filipinos, so I think they're trying to avoid the culture. (I was the same too excpt towards Koreans lmao) I think even if the mom did teach them the language or culture, they'll never really appreciate it until they go to the Philippines themselves and experience it. And I think the siblings will warm up to the brother soon enough it's just that they're going through puberty so they still don't know how to appreciate anything. Also regarding the sisters not helping, most Korean girls their age is like that XD Anyways thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Because they're in Korea. Earl John has every reason to learn Korean even without trying to get closer to his siblings. His future in Korea depends on it. As for the younger siblings - yes it would be nice for them to try to learn Tagalog but I sense some kind of emotional struggle. They probably never visited Philippines, or met their grandmother, uncle and brother in person until one day, they just showed up to live with the family in Korea. And all of a sudden the siblings have to accommodate these strangers (I know it sounds harsh but that's who they are for all intents and purposes) who speak in a language they can't understand, nag (I'm talking about the grandmother, not Earl John) and seem to be dependent on them for everything. There's probably a sense of shame too of the new family members' perceived "inadequacies". Similar to what some immigrant children in the West secretly feel when confronting their first-generation parents' lack of knowledge of English and of the Western system. I'm not excusing their behaviour . Three years is a long time and more secure and happy children will certainly have overcome these difficulties and embraced the new family members. But I think there's a lot going on with these siblings that we don't know about. That said, I'm sure Earl John's sincerity will win them over in the long run and they will learn to appreciate his presence in their lives.

The mom should've also taught her half korean children some basic filipino so that they could also learn to accept and appreciate another part of their heritage. It makes me sad about Earl's situation at times because he came to korea late, and he seems a bit awkward with his family (unless of course it's due to all the cameras being there!). Going to another country at a later age is quite a challenge, especially when the culture is sooo different. I can attest to this since I moved to Canada at age 15 (although younger than Earl). My mom and sis stayed in the philippines, so i had to live with my dad's side of the family in Canada. It was so awkward for the first few years because even though they were family, they felt like strangers to me because i never lived with them. I've been in canada for about 8 years now, and i think i've gotten used to the culture that it's now become a part of me. Keep going, earl john! It really does get better! She could've became stable after relocating then found time to return back to get her son. Her priorities were not straight. Also that remark about the fat people... *roll my eyes* super filipino thing to say I'm not even surprised. Mad respect to Nanay for taking care of her grandson. Earl John, wishing you the best of luck in everything. You are clearly a hard worker and have a kind spirit. You will do well in life. Get your foundations in and if you feel like you need to leave, just do it.

In our generation right now, it's normal for teenagers like them to be spoiled but this is just not right. They may feel awkward towards their older brother because he is a pure filipino and not half korean, but they should think of how their brother felt and still tried his best to communicate with them and just to bond with them despite of everything. ANYWAYS, if someone knows the name of his twins friends who are also half filipino, please let me know.

Lol okay so here’s the thing. I have many relatives who gets remarried to foreigners and leaves their children in the Philippines for a couple of years fixing papers to migrate. I mean it’s hard to for parents to be separated with their children but from what’s happening to El John is that his mother didn’t make enough effort to accustom his step siblings and El John too, of the culture. She could’ve introduced El John to the culture when he was younger since she planned to take him to Korea and get him to slowly learn, up until he can go. I also think they often get in contact with each other when he was in the Philippines and just had promised to get him when he was this certain age, that’s why his siblings are still awkward with him

One of my favorite episodes of the show so far because of the Filipino representation~ My mom is from Mindanao and majority of my family still live there, and this makes me feel a little closer to my heritage. I don't know how to speak the language but I understand enough from my mom to know enough though I sometimes wish I knew the language myself. And being a college kid living away from home, it was almost comforting hearing my mom's language and dialect even without her here with me. To Earl John, I'm so proud of you for not only being such a loyal and loving son, brother, and member of your family in general but also for learning Korean for your siblings and step-dad. I hope that you and your siblings and the rest of your family grow closer together, create amazing memories together and enjoy the blessings that have been both given and earned.

Yet the siblings whi has lived with their mom dont know a single bisaya or tagalog..That's a pity. It's also a pity that they show NO sign of respect towards their grandmother. theyre Korean so I guess I expected them to be more respectful towards elders since thats like one of the top "rules" in Korea. Also about Understanding and communication...That's hard to achieve if it's ONLY Earl John who is willing to do all the work. I speak bisaya. I consider it a language....whats to distinguish between dialect & language in the Philippines anyway? I'm always hesitant to use the word dialect....if Tagalog-only speakers cannot understand bisaya, how can we still consider it a dialect?? :)@@kaydy7735 Also you might want to consider the fact that because Cebuanos have our own culture and ways of doing/understanding things that is so engrained with and developed with bisaya that is really too different from other places in the country...thats why I dont wanna call bisaya a dialect...Sure its spoken in other regions and there are variations but bisaya is a language TO ME. "To me" anyways haha okay I'll just stop there..Dont get me started on this conversation lol I dont believe in that distinction even though we Filipinos always use "dialect". is Bisaya a dialect within the Tagalog language? No. Can all tagalog speakers understand bisaya? No. Then theyre separate languages in "my" opinion.
