Many years ago I walked into a room in a friend's house, where my partner's 3 month old baby was sleeping. In there I found our host's 6 year old daughter pushing a cushion onto the baby's face. I took the cushion from her, and checked the baby, but didn't tell anyone...I just couldn't face being told I was lying.

These people? Yes, something is wrong. Though I have no room to talk. I tried to kill my sister, too, but not for any malicious reason. Long story short? Was a SUPER religious child who took the Bible LITERALLY. Mom walked in on me putting a pillow on my sister's face, and she ripped me off her. Then, she asked me what I thought I was doing. My response? "We're trying to see the angels." Mom had a LONG talk with me that day. Had another instance where another of my sisters did the same to the next, but this one was malicious. Baby took a toy from her, and she retaliated. Luckily, Mom also walked in on this at the right time and ripped her off. Long talks were had. We do laugh about it today as adult sisters (the four of us) but we are now aware if any of them has children how we need to be very vigilant and make sure children understand the consequences to such actions. I really do think SOME kids just don't have the full understanding of the finality of death and that once it happens, there is no coming back. Mom had to explain to us that if our sister died, there was no coming back, and I very clearly remember the feeling of dread, fear, guilt, and sadness once I realized how severe it could have been. These people in this video? Absolutely not.

No, from the story it doesn't sound like the sister was neglected. The mother was ill, so she had to be away and that, of course, threw the family into chaos for some time. The father had to continue to work so he got a nanny, which is more than most people would do. The aunt was there to help too. He made time to drive his sons to their sports AND for two daddy-daughter outings each week for a 5-year-old. That's not neglect. That's more than most families with 4 children get done when both parents are present. And it was only for a relatively short period after which mom was back. It's not something that would bring a "normal" child to try to smoother their baby sibling. They put her in therapy for 3-4 years, so they did get her help and she didn't improve. Something seems to be very wrong with that sister and it's not just "I didn't have my mommy for a few weeks when I was 5".

Wow, was not expecting a whole BPD stigma tirade in this. Just to be clear, what the commenter said about BPD was wrong. What they are describing is more like NPD aka narcissistic personality disorder. Can BPD people display these traits? Of course, they are part of the same personality disorder cluster, and in fact most people display one or two traits of narcissism and it's perfectly healthy. But you're more likely to see a borderline have a panic attack and threaten to hurt themselves to get a parent to stay than you would to see them try to suffocate the "competition". Narcissists manipulate with calculated, malicious intent, while borderlines manipulate out of fight-or-flight desperation. Neither are okay, but perpetuating the rumor that borderlines are manipulative and dangerous makes getting them help even harder to accomplish.

Really, doesn't anyone accusing OP's parents watch the video until the end? The parents definitely didn't take her sister trying to kill her as a joke, that's why they never leave them alone together and put the sister in therapy for many years. They're not enabling her madness, just that the sister was good enough to even fool her therapist and psychologist. And there was no golden child there, just a mother who was mentally weak and unstable that made her prone to being manipulated. The parents having equal savings for all their children showed that. The mother went with the sister wishes only because she was guilt-tripped and manipulated, not out of favoritism. The way she didn't really defend what she did and immediately followed her husband's decision showed that she actually knew she was wrong and didn't really want to do that. And the father didn't even know anything and immediately tried to make it right when he knew the truth, how anyone could call that favoritism is beyond me 😮‍💨 the parents had their flaws, but they were nothing like many of you accused them.

OP is Canadian, but otherwise, I agree. I don't think it's the norm in the US to charge guests for attendance (it is, however, becoming more normal to ask wedding party members to help foot the bill for outfits, pre-wedding events, etc.) These Reddit stories would make you think this kind of thing happens all the time, but I think it's actually much more rare and is perceived as tacky by most people even within the same "culture"

The issue with putting people in therapy is that if the person in question doesn't want to and don't see a problem with their actions, therapy will be completely useless. You don't need to be a "master manipulator" to say the 'right' things in therapy and it's not like the therapist can control if they're being lied to.

I really disagree with the comments on BPD. Full disclosure , I was diagnosed with the personality disorder about 15 years ago and I've done individual and group DBT therapy. None of us would be described as manipulators. And BPD is not usually diagnosed until the person is around 12 or 13 at the earliest. It's only been in the last couple of years professionals diagnose someone under 18 with it. BPD usually has roots in ab;se or negl?ct. There is a huge fear of abandonment, and usually a lot of self-loathing.

I NEED to speak out as italian. Here in italy the wedding gets paid by the couple itself, helped by their parents. You just need to dress on your own, make a gift and in case of being a bride maid partecipate at the bachelorett3 party. It can cost about 400 euro tops, but not 3000 dollars! In my case my family did not had much to offer for my aunt wedding, but she wanted her sister to be there, so she helped my parents as she could. Ok it's up the people, but we DON'T DO THIS in italy!

So. I have a thing I'd like to mention. First of All, I have BPD. Or at least I did (I have since recovered! Yay!). What OP is saying about her Sister doesn't seem like BPD to me. It sounds like while OP's Sister may/not have BPD there is definitely something more happening & Considering that if you have 1 PD you're more than likely have Multiple, so (I think the Sister doesn't have BPD) OP's Sister probably has NPD &/or ASPD. And I am saying this as both someone whom has studied to be a Therapist & as someone with ALOT of Mental Health issues. If I were her Therapist I would've diagnosed her with NPD &/or ASPD.

  • @izzycurer1260

Okay, so the family didn't brush it off as a joke, they took it seriously and did everything they were supposed to do. They put the sister in kid-therapy and kept her away from the child-op until she was old enough to defend herself. The only one calling it a joke was the narc sister once she got a little older, which implies that people were still talking about it years later as if it were a real concern. Op only assumed the sister was telling the truth for a bit, because she was still a kid at the time (I assume), and because she's been dealing with psychological abuse her whole life. Little click-baity there, SecretVoices. Also, I think the MOG was intentionally playing 'the bad guy' at the wedding because she's sussed out that the sister has a mental disorder. You hear all these horror stories about the MIL, but in this case it might actually be justified. She probably doesn't care if her son gets married (as is evidenced by the ex), she just doesn't want a dangerous psycho lady in the family.

Only once? My sociopathic sister tried to kill me loads of times. But eventipually she got my parents to leave everything to her by lying. After that she seemed happy so long as my oldest sister and me stayed away, that is. She was a real cuckoo in our nest. More sinister is she's a nurse. My other sister and I used to try to calculate how many people she'd killed. You had to like her or she would get vengeful. But as she preferred to nurse the elderly, there's no proof.

I was looking through the comments, just to confirm that I haven't missed anything. 😅 And really, this weird change made me suspicious about the whole story. Changes like that easily happen when telling a made-up story; one, one really has no emotional or personal connection to because it either never happened, or at least not like this, or it happened to someone other than the storyteller. 🤷‍♀️ What also made me wonder about whether this might be a fake is, that at one point OP states that her sister's fiance is a good and stable guy, who's calm and down to earth, and then later writes, that he's always displayed some mildly concerning behaviour... 🤔
