They would not let this movie run today. After decades people have woken up to the 9---11 events. It was not muslims who did this, it was themselves and blamed it on us. We go through hell ever since that event. Look at the world today muslims simply have no right to live according to western media. This movie hits hard and it's our reality till this day.

The airport scenes really happened to brown or Muslims....it doesn't matter who it is even the star who played Rizwan khan "SRK" in real life stopped at airport for checking individually.... it doesn't matter if you are world's greatest actor...So this movie is so real at many levels🤞🤞 why I say the greatest you can watch his 3 decades of SRK by SRK SQUAD 🤩❤️

1:04:09 I get that. I have the same frustration when I see Hollywood represent India in their movies. For hollywood india is all slums, poverty, crowded and dirty places, and spicy food. But thats just one part of cities like Delhi and Mumbai which isn't quite representative of India. I mean I grew up in India in a privileged household never faced poverty. Enjoyed everything that normal middle class american kid might enjoy like playstations, going out with friedns etc. Also, in my hometown there isnt a single slum most of the people are either rich or middle class but not so bad like staying in 2 room apartments with no toilets or dirty mud stained clothes begging on the streets. Also we dont eat spicy food like my region in India; the food that is popular in america as Indian food is just Punjabi and North Indian cuisine. Dev Patel actually likes to cash in on this poverty porn and that is how he has shaped his career in the west by playing on those stereotypes. The poverty and slums are bit exaggerated in American movies. So, I can see how when an Indian film might portray America it will be exaggerated since people who make these films don't have fully lived experience in that country or culture. Shahrukh Khan was actually detained by US immigration on a visit to the United States. He was already a big star back in India. This happened post 9/11 and that actually inspired him to work on this movie.

Also, if you want to watch the main leads (Khan and Mandira) in a completely different way character-wise, deffo watch Kuch Kuch Hota Hai 😂 It's fun, light-hearted and a little silly but such a cult-classic! It should cheer you up after My Name is Khan. These two actors are considered as the best on-screen couple in Bollywood. I'd say all the movies they did together were mega-hits e.g. DDLJ and K3G are two other movies I would recommend. An SRK+Kajol late 90s/early 2000s movie reaction binge would such a dream to watch!

This one should have gotten an Oscar

It baffles me to this day how this didnt win an oscar. I was 16 in 2010 when I watched this movie alone in my room and I couldnt stop crying. That was time when bollywood was art ❤

How I cried with this movie 😢❤ Thanks to this movie I learned that you should not judge people, be it because of their ethnicity, their sexual orientation, their thoughts, whether religious or political, their gender, etc. That there are good people and bad people in this world and you have to be yourself without fear of what others will say. May everything you set your mind to do from the heart to face your fears and difficulties that life proposes to us. In addition, this movie was one of the keys to knowing what was happening to me since I identified with Khan, because I presented the same symptoms as him. When I was little I felt different from others and I felt that something was not right in me and Thanks to this movie I was able to understand what was happening to me and little by little overcome the adversities and difficulties that life poses to me. Long live this beautiful film and the iconic Bollywood couple SRKAJOL 💛 🧬 💛 🧬 💛 🧬 💛 🧬 💛

Next indian movie should be zindagi na milegi dobara . Its fun drama. Some other suggestions 1. Haider- one of the best modern adaptation of hamlet.

1:04:00 ... I'm Sri Lankan (from a country next to India), and I often see black people portrayed as "Christian, friendly, and loud" in movies and shows (I watch a lot of stuff!). So Mama Jenny didn't seem exaggerated to me. The white officer was initially a bit odd to me, but then again, it's the USA-anything can happen! Unfortunately, Americans don't have the best reputation globally (which is a generalization). I'd like to point out that there is a lot of representation in terms of racial and religious identities in this movie, even in the cast and crew.

1:04:17 That’s a really good point, and one that hadn’t occurred to me - I guess at this point I’m numb to the wacky stereotypes that Hollywood falls back on when it portrays people outside the US. Overall a good movie, but the second half was pretty over-the-top, which is too bad given how much sensitivity and nuance it had in the first half. It’s almost as if the screenwriters (I believe there were two) tag-teamed it and the one who wrote the second half was on yaba. If the movie was 30 minutes longer, Khan would probably have become a Jedi.

We are treated this way especially if we are visibally m**lim and even 22 years later it's the same. 22 years later we know who was responsible but we still blamed. Look at whats happening in Falasteen, we aren't considered human and it's just a sad world we live in. The msg of this movie and the point is that there are GOOD people and BAD people a whole religon isnt defined by bad people doing vad things.
