My Name is Bill W 1989 Bill makes a decision
Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, was no saint. But he realized that, if he wanted to stay sober, he needed to talk to another alcoholic. What he decides to do about it, as depicted in this scene from the 1989 movie, "My Name is Bill W.," is the reason AA exists today. (spoiler alert) He is away from home on a difficult business trip, under stress, with time on his hands waiting to learn the outcome of his business matter, and temptation sets in. Of course there was no AA. So he makes it his business to search out and find another alcoholic to talk to, and AA is born. Alcoholics all over the world thank you for this moment, Bill. The alcoholic he finds is co-founder Dr. Bob Smith, played by James Garner in the movie.

I was in a meeting today and we talked about how isolation kills. Scenes from the film like this really emphasize the importance of our connections!

AA is to _"cultish"_ for me. Especially as a non-religious/non-spiritual person it doesn't work for me. But if it even saved one person, it has an place as a abstinence program. _(but they sometimes sell themselves as the only way/solution)_

My uncle Walter Doyle just passed away last week. Going through his belongings we came to find out he played the bartender in this scene. It’s ironic because I’m in recovery from alcoholism. Now I have a pretty cool story to share. But most importantly RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE

This particular scene is great fun to watch some years after it was filmed in the Virginia Governor's Mansion. I happen to be sitting just out of sight while Woods went through his paces. The sound man was kind enough to let me sit with him (I was awol from my duties with the guv) and gave me a pair of earphones to hear what was being said. Woods had to carry a lot of it in silence and it was impressive seeing him pull it off.

I saw this clip for the first time about 2 years ago, and it makes SO much more sense for me now
Watched this as a kid with my mother who was an alcoholic/drug addict, who left the program after saying it just made her want to drink. So was my father. I guess it was destiny that I became an alcoholic myself.
