I once decided to cosplay Kirito from SAO and all throughout con I was admiring other cosplayers and it was awesome. Me and my friends decided to go and get lunch so we went and did that but as we were leaving the place a small girl walked up to me and asked for a photo. I complied, like the gentleman i am, and got the selfie with her. But what got me was that she ran back over to her friends and shouted: "I GOT A SELFIE WITH SEBASTIAN FROM BLACK BUTLER". Photos have never been the same since.

I have a permanent scar on my leg because of something stupid I did in cosplay. It was Halloween and I decided to be pearl and wear my pearl cosplay. I was trick or treating with my friends and there was a small devil child dressed as a clown getting up in people's faces. I loath clowns. This kid comes up to me and I nope it out of there. I ran so fast that I tripped, ripped my tights, and my knee and hands started to bleed.

I don't get it. When I am in situations like that I own that shit. I take the mindset that I am the most awesome person in the room, everyone else is lame for not being as cool as me, and secretly everyone wishes they were having as much fun as me. It is only awkward if you make it awkward. If you own it, other people will be jealous.

Muddle Puddie It is true. For example, guys my age (33) are too cool to dance at parties and even wedding receptions. My ass is out there dancing with all the girls, including the girlfriends of the guys who are “too cool” to dance. Fact of the matter is that people who are “too cool to do something” are usually just losers and uninteresting.

My sister and I went to a doll show/sale that I think was last summer. We took our BJD dolls with us and if you know anything about them then they are NOT your typical doll. So we had each doll on an arm and walked around the show room and it was full of old men and women. There were a few young people there but not very many. We kept getting looked at weird. It was a doll show...we had dolls...there should have been no problem. We got tired of how people were staring and talking to each other WHILE looking at us that we finally left. I don't cosplay much anymore, I mostly like to wear Kimonos/ Furisode kimonos now but the times I WAS out in cosplay or even Lolita was interesting. Recently my sister and I went to Ramencon 2017 and of course I wear my kimonos because why not? I don't wear them anywhere else. On Sunday the convention center had to share a bit of space with a christian church group having mass there and needless to say, the looks they were giving where judgemental. I walked by one lady in the main lobby and she took a look at me and said out loud "Really?!" as if it was a crime to wear something like I was. I ignored her because I thought I looked pretty and I still do when I wear my kimonos. No up-in-my-business christian lady is gonna change that.

Not that long ago, I went to a con in cosplay. I was dressed as King/Harlequin from Seven Deadly Sins. I went round the con, bought some stuff, everything went well. I went home at about 5:30 and I decided to grab McDonald’s on the way home since I lived about half an hour away. This McDonald’s didn’t have a drive thru so I decided to take my hoodie off before I went in, but I was still in shorts, a weird blue shirt and yellow and blue boots. In the middle of March. I didn’t think about it that much since I was just going to go in, grab a burger and go back to the car. I walked in and I got some weird looks, most people knew that there was a con going on nearby so most people looked, realised and looked away, but one woman came up to me and asked why I was wearing a wig, a ton of makeup, and these weird ass clothes (not her exact words). I politely told her that I was getting dinner after the Comic Con and Anime Expo that was being held nearby and I went in costume as one of my favourite characters. When she told me that I was too old for dressing up, I explained to her that a lot of people do it and that there is a whole community of cosplayers. She then told me that my clothes made me look like an idiot and that everyone was confused about what I was doing and why I looked so weird. I asked her to leave me alone and told her that I was going to leave as soon as I got my food. She kept on hassling me until one of the employees saw and asked her to leave me alone or leave the store. She finally shut up and I got my food. I cosplay a lot but I don’t like photos because I’m awful at human interaction. This woman put me off cosplaying for a little while but my friends convinced me to go in a group cosplay with them. I re-used my King cosplay and we went as all seven of the sins. I decided that the cosplay community is too good for one idiot to stop me.

I dressed as Harley Quinn for the Suicide Squad premiere but the movie didnt start until later that night, so we decided to get some pizza and then walk through the city. Turns out the shady red-light district is very close to the cinema and the pizza place. Walked down a prostitute-lined street wearing sequin hotpants and a torn-up shirt.

I felt this way a few times when I brought costumes to school in Halloween/carnival. Almost no one in the schools o went to did. After a few times of doing it almost completely alone and often being ridiculed for it I gave up on it. Until I visited my first gaming con. Realising cosplay was a thing and people didn't mock people for dressing up there was the moment my life started

The only thing close to cosplay I've done was cosplaying Frisk from Undertale just for Halloween at my school because I wanted to. And my hair is the same color so I didn't have to do anything about that.. But the entire day I was super embarrassed becauuuse.. I was wearing shorts with black tights underneath and brown boots because I've seen some people cosplaying Frisk do it like that (and i really didnt want to show any skin) so I did that.. I was super excited and felt awesome about it. Then we got to the parking lot and I was walking towards the school and of course my brother tells me as we're walking that I look weird because no one wheres tights underneath shorts.. So the whole day I was worrying that people would think I looked weird. Luckily I think I just sorta ignored it after a while and while I was in the lunch line someone recognized who I was (and that someone was wearing a dino onesie I think? How did they get away with that.. p sure one of the teachers wouldve said it was against the dress code or something) So yeh. I can't wait til I have more time and money to do some actual cosplay..

Great video as always, Anya! Something I realized recently after cosplaying for four years is if you're cosplaying and people are starting at you, they aren't necessarily staring because they think you're weird, they could be staring because they think you're cool, or they want to look at your costume. That probably wasn't the case here, but at cosplay events it often it's. Usually the first time I go to a small convention or a convention I don't know much about I go in normal clothes to avoid this.

I have a embarrassing story myself. My friends and I made vocaloid cosplays for our County Fair for a sewing contest. There was supposed to be five of us in total, Miku, Rin, Len, Luka, and Kaito, but my sister who was Len was busy with her horse, and my other friend who was Rin was busy with her pony. So I was left with meh Miku and my Luka (I was Kaito V3 btw) -Well this was my first time cosplaying, and I'm not someone to really go out and embarrass myself wearing my blue hair and my weird white, blue and yellow coat. (I love cosplaying but I am a lil too self conscience.) We did mannequin modeling where you sit there like a statue and just stare at people stare back at you.... yeah. Some people knew who we were and it made me feel better. But after we were done modeling, I was a little too lazy to change back to my normal clothes, since our RV was far away..... So yeah, my friend who was Luka enjoyed herself, but you know.... I'm excited to go to a real comic con.... I don't think I had a good start.... I'll probably be remembered as Blue boy for the rest of my fair life..... DX

I experienced something similar last year but this very little convention advertised itself as cosplay friendly, had a discount for cosplayers, and had a cosplay contest on Sunday. I even did my research and saw photos from past years. I went on the day they didn’t do the cosplay contest because I thought more people were gonna be there. It wass suuuper bad bc I was the only one dressed up (as young Jack Sparrow) and everybody else was dressed in belly dancing costumes probably because they were performing. I left after 20 minutes and went to the beach for photos instead because I felt so uncomfortable! Thank you for sharing your story! I definitely feel you lol

I've got a somewhat similar story of when I went to a halloween party (a "grown-up" one, if you will) in a very weebish attack on titan cosplay. I mean, the people there were super nice, but that almost made it worse?? I have a childish-looking face despite being in my 20s, so they probably thought "man, who invited this teenager?" and tried to like, ask me questions about anime and stuff and god I just left early feeling embarrassed. If you're going to a halloween party, either DON'T dress in cosplay, or just gather up the courage to FLAUNT it, y'know? I could not do either of those things.

I’m pretty new to cosplay and going to cons and stuff, but anyways... Here’s a story from my first con ever haha I was cosplaying Star Butterfly from SVTFOE, and of course the con had all of these super cool things to do. One of them was cosplay blind date... Oof. It was really fun though, I just regret one of the things I said... The guy who like hosted (?) the cosplay blind date, had said that if you were in cosplay, it would be fun if you answered as your character. So, the question was, “what is your favourite anime?”. I could have just answered Sailor Moon, Nanatsu no Taizai or BNHA, because that’s probably what kind of anime Star would be in to, but I of course answered “I don’t watch anime”. And immediately after saying that, I was just like “Oh my glob now everyone probably thinks I don’t like anime” I have so many embarrassing stories from that con, but that’s probably the one I think Ed about the most when it had happened. It’s not really that much of an embarrassing story, but since it was my first con, and I’m like 13, I ofc feel like everyone is silently judging me

I had the same experience but for a Renaissance event. I had even emailed the people before going about whether or not I should be in costume, and they had said that some people go in costume. I had my twin sister in an outfit as well. We got to the event, which was an event where they discussed things like Renaissance clothing and stuff like that. We were literally the only people in costume and we were the only young people there (I think I may have been in high school at the time)-the others were adults and lots of them were older adults as well(30s-40s). Everyone stared at us and I can remember them smiling like it was "cute" or something. It really looked as if we had no idea what we were doing-and we both have social anxiety. Social anxiety and this really don't go together lol It was also a much smaller event than I had thought, so that made me even more embarrassed and depressed. I can still remember how embarrassed I was to this day.

( I know this is late but whatever) For Halloween 2017, I just did a quick closet cosplay of female Danielxdream (Y'all Phans know who I'm talking about) and I expected that most people knew who Dan and Phil were since they are pretty popular so I just expected when someone asked me what I was it would just go like: Them: Who are you? Me: You know Dan and Phil? Them: I've heard of them Me: well, Dan dresses up in all pastel for a video and I did a gender bent version BUT NOPE IT ALMOST ALWAYS WENT LIKE THIS: Them: Who are you? Me: Y'Know Dan and Phil? Them: Who? Me: Well they're youtubers and uuh *explains in full detail who they are making my costume even more confusing* Them: Oh, I thought you were a fairy BUT SINCE THE TEACHERS THOUGHT I WAS A FAIRY, I WON THE COSTUME CONTEST... Also the 2nd place winner was a Trump and they took photos of us so now there is photos of my dressed as Dan Howell next to a Donald Trump... That day was both embarrassing and amazing

For my first convention, the city it was in had 2 different convention centers. We ended up at the wrong one and my friend and I were all dressed up at a SCRAPBOOKING CONVENTION. we did make it to the convention we were supposed to be at though so it was all good in the end.

6:33 didn't cosplay for a con since we didn't see anything about it on their website, and my friend said it wasn't really that kind of event... show up and a cosplay masquerade is on the itinerary at the front. There were maybe 3 people cosplaying there oops

I went to Publix in a strawberry shortcake cosplay and one girl at school recognized me but instead of coming up to me when I was at Publix she went up to me at school with a group of five friends.

Great story Anya. I had my own experience with my own cosplay and it was for a costume parade for a club in university and I wore a gladiator costume in one time and a samurai armor in another. Both had masks cause I felt embarrassed doing it even though I wanted to. The samurai one had a breastplate but the gladiator was topless so I just powered through it

I was cosplaying Ezra’s purgatory armor from Fairy Tail and this guy who was multiple years older than me came over to me and asked for a photo. I said sure and he walked off and yelled “NOT THE REAL ERZA EVERYBODY” why?!?

I use TAG and Snazaroo. TAG stays on much better and is better pigmented, but can stain easily while Snaz takes longer to apply and doesn't stay on as well (especially in the summer), but it washes off of your skin and clothes very easily. That being said, it really depends on what you prefer and think you'll be most comfortable using.

I'm lucky in that most of the characters I cosplay wear ordinary street clothes. Showing up in a tweed jacket & bow tie as the Eleventh Doctor may come across as a bit overdressed in most contexts, but if you take off the fez you won't get strange looks, at least.

Oof this is honestly always my fear when going to new anime conventions for the first time. I don't know why even when I would know other people going to the same con dressed up.

at school we have book week for all year levels, my friend and i decided to go in cosplay, we were like the only people dressed up let alone wearing a wig. while i was walking around school i came across a school bully and we made direct eye contact and i regretted everything. i honestly wonder what she was thinking when she saw me
