My mother who is well in her 50s, never seen an anime before apart from dragon ball in the 90's when I used to watch it, so one day I just put her the first episode of AoT back in 2015, we binged the entire season in like 4 or 5 days, every month until season 2 came out she kept asking me when there was going to be more, we are all caught up as we keep watching it together. My gf really disliked anime as she is one of those that thinks it was for kids, one day I just put on death note and told her nothing but to watch, she binged it in 4 days 😂 She had a hard time getting back into her shows as they seemed boring 😂

Im 49. Last summer , three weeks before going away to Spain to study my son called me to his room. He told me to seat for a second because he wanted to show me something. He showed me the intro to the first episode of AoT and that was it. I was hooked. We saw the first three seasons the following three weeks. And when the 4th season came we saw it "together" every sunday. He in Spain and me in Puerto Rico. Im obssesed now.

Great as always. Really want you to watch Overlord someday. It's really good, and has a lot of thorough world building and awesome fights. It's another one where the protagonist is the villain.

So doing a bit of research (I'll be honest, I looked for like 15 minutes and saw a lot of the same) I'd say that Attack on Titan is not the most popular anime currently. One of the most popular, sure, but not THE most popular. And to answer another question you asked, ghoul sounds like pool when pronounced so you were pronouncing it correctly.
