Great list! I also carry a couple small single use size packets of alcohol based sanitizer. They are flammable to help with fire starting as well. :)

things I add are a quart freezer ziplock bag (very heavy duty not likely to break when used as a canteen) a contractor trash bag (useful as a shelter, rain gear and hauling leaves etc to make a shelter), a hotel size bar of soap, Painkillers, tea bags or small packets of drink powder to add to water. and a square of aluminum foil to make a pot to boil water. The important thing is this kit should be on your person at all times if you leave your pack. more than one person has gotten lost walking 50 feet from camp or the trail to go to the toilet. when in the wilderness a whistle is always around my neck a knife and lighter are in my pockets so the rest of the items are in a small belt pack. Make your kit fit your needs, area you hike and conditions you hike in.

I always carry 2 heavy duty 55 gallon drum liners (garbage bags). Could be a poncho, shelter , litter mattress , hip waders or pack/gear cover. They'll carry water too.

Boot laces that are 54 to 72 inches long. They can replace boot laces if on breaks or be used as precut cordage for light fastening tasks. Quikclot combat gauze serious bleeding. One in your med kit and one in your emergency pack. If you need something really bad you need to have two of them.

Whirl-pack bags with 12 purification tabs is a ideal for water collect.

For cordage I use the thinner number 90 paracord I carry about 25 to 30 ft of it this can actually be used as a Ridgeline for a temporary shelter with a space blanket

I carry a 3m length of Kevlar kite line in my wallet everyday, fits like it's not even there and has come in really handy because of its super high tensile strength. I also recommend Olight's H2r nova (neutral white ver) as the best and most versatile head/hand lamp, it has between 0.5 and 2300lm, long rechargeable battery life and is very compact. A metal pen and some weatherproof paper is great too and often undervalued. As for the mirror, a standard makeup mirror is almost impossible to aim over a distance where it may be useful in the first place as you have nothing to guide it by, you can get purpose made mirrors from BCB which have a type of lens which allows you to aim the spot of light. For the knife I recommend the Ohta FK5 Higonokami style folder, I have mine with a lignin vitae handle and D2 blade, it is entirely legal for EDC in the UK and is a very good basic tool for wild camping and hiking. And don't overlook the lighter, I have a thunderbird butane insert in my custom case which has an adjustable wind proof jet and soft flame options and it is not unreliable at least in my experience however I still do not see fire starting as a priority unless it's cold or your wet. Also a strong tarp sheet is often highly desirable in a survival situation. And how about just a good quality long range radio?

You know, most peoples arm reach from the tip of the fingers to the opposite shoulder is about 1m, so it's a very valid measuring unit 😉

Using measurements like this is very practical for applications that can do with limited precision. In fact measurements of body parts are still in use (e. g. "foot" or "inch"). I would use my own measurements though. For me it´s 1.10m from fingertips to opposite shoulder. For a piece of cordage for emergency use that is accurate enough. BTW: "pace" was used a measurement for distances both in civilian and military use. Depending on the nation the pace was about 80cm.

A very lightweight compact but strong bag can be had in the produce section of your grocery store those bags are extremely strong and lightweight and you can carry water in them

For fire starting in my emergency kit I buy 100% in Cotton cosmetic rounds these are round pieces of cotton you can get smaller ones or larger ones than smear them with Vaseline and put them into a plastic baggie.. to ignite just take them out of the baggie and fluff up spread out the cotton in the center and use your fire steel matches or lighter to light

Non lubricated condoms and tampons are an old army trick. Most NATO emergency kits have at least the condoms but we used to put in tampons and lip balm (flame extender). Also a good trick are those cotton pads women use to clear away make-up, use excess candle wax to melt and poor it in them one at a time. You have waterproof tinder with flame extension.

Easy way to use fire steel is to hold striker in place and draw rod towards you.

Do you have any other items that you would recommend adding into my emergency kit? Let's help each other out! :) EDIT!!! When I measured the rope I forgot to mention it's 3 METERS! Not a random "Maiu's arm length" :D

Backpackers may want to consider their gear as a web of redundancies where different items back up each other. Don't just think of 'normal' gear and 'emergency' gear. For drinkable water, I have 3 systems. Filter (primary), Stove for boiling (backup), iodine tablets (backup backup since water is so important). Light: Headlamp (primary), Extra headlamp battery (backup), phone (backup backup), Stove (backup backup backup) Fire: Stove w/ built-in ignitor (primary), waterproof matches (backup), small lighter (although flint/steel probably better), phone (puncture Li-Ion battery as last resort) Map: Phone w/ offline maps (primary), printed map & compass (backup), knowledge of the area (terrain landmarks, navigation back stops like major rivers, roads) I think Maiu knows all of this, but sharing for the community.

We carry many of the same items! That small knife is very useful. Here's somethings I do: I pack items into a Swiss canteen cup, it's small. Include a PLB if you can - my family insisted. I put needles into a section of drinking straw hinged over with duct tape. I use monofilament thread since it's better for fishing small things than Paracord strand. Consider type 4 paracord rather than type seven - can carry more length before deciding to gut it. I also carry dehydration salts and sugar sachets in the survival kit too. I prefer candy, but I've come across moribund people who won't take a candy, but will take a drink. I include a tealight candle because, in combination with the canteen cup and mylar blanket, it's a warmer. A small roll of duct tape. Flame extender, gear repair, blister patch etc.

The only thing I would add is a small roll of toilet paper or a pocket pack of Kleenex tissue. Very important when one has to make a boom boom in the woods . . . 😮

Just a small thing but you may use pepper plasters instead of hand-leg warmers. Also way smaller/lighter

Waterproof and stormproof matches are two different things. Waterproof are ordinary matches with a small layer of wax to protect against moisture. Stormproof have a layer of special material to keep it lit even after submerged in water. In the west the latter are also called lifeboat matches sometimes. I always carry a half liter stainless steel bottle on my belt when walking in my emergency kit i have food grade freezer bags and purification tablets. With tropical conditions i also carry an extra 1,75 liter cowboy canteen or 2 liter US or Chech army canteen. This is in addition to my 2 liter waterbladder and one liter Nalgene bottle with nesting cup. Over here we have a lot of stagnant water and even when boiled or filtered the neurotoxin of certain bacteria and algae will remain in it. Stay safe and healthy 👍

Great to see u posting on YT again. I follow u on IG, but prefer YT over IG. Great kit ingredients and the suggestions in the comments below are good as well. I would add a foil packet of Benadryl. You never know if you'll have an adverse reaction to an insect sting/bite or exposure to a poison plant.

Along with Benadryl I like to include a blister card of Imodium anti-diahreal.

Excellent kit! Tampons also make excellent gauze for bad wounds. Can tie it down with cloth for a pressure bandage.

5:40 The mirror is useful for seeing wounds that you cannot see normally (e.g. wounds on your back or head). It also helps to properly dress the wounda like that when you do it yourself and there is no one to help you.

Amazing idea to paint your hikes. Stay safe and well.

Having spent a lot of time in the Southern African Bush (and been very, very thirsty at times) access to potable water is always uppermost in my mind. The Boiled Sweets too 👍. Basically, your Kit covers the most of the '10 C's of Survival .. a Common Denominator to all Emergency Kits. To share something from Mors Kochanski .. "Your clothing is the most important survival tool you have. Dress properly and any emergency you may have to endure becomes more manageable." Lars from 'Survival Russia' also has some strong opinions on the Subject .. one of them being that going out prepared (planned beforehand) for the trip in question .. be it down to the local Supermarket or an Expedition .. goes a long way in 'easing the pain' of possible hiccups. I have used that small pocket knife you showed for at least 3-4 years now. It is worth its weight in gold. I cut small things such as small diameter cordage & other thin materials. I use the scissors more than I can count. The file tip also doubles as a screwdriver. It has a toothpick and tweezers. It is suprising how many times this pocket knife is used as the first tool from my backpacking/bushcrafting kit!

Excellent suggestions, I have never heard of tampons being used for fire starter before, but that is an excellent idea. I carry dryer lint in a ziplock bag and also some cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly. Oh-don't forget the duct tape, it's handy for so many things from pack and pole repairs to blisters if your run out of moleskin. Wrap a meter around a trekking pole and your good to go.

Great video - I love the hard candy idea! Also, if you are struggling with starting fires with a fire steel, try using the side edge of the striker instead of the tip - it might be a little less awkward, and you may be able to get a bit more pressure on your strike, giving you more sparks.

Great video, thank you! I like the doggie bag idea because even though they're flimsy they're compact enough to have one in the "on your person 100% of the time" items. Which is very small by necessity. (Worst case scenario the canoe flips or whatever else happens and "you" are all you have.) One thing I add is a piece of aluminum foil. It can be set up as a a windbreak or inverted U for starting a fire in heavy rain or any of a hundred other purposes. You can even form a cup to boil water although it's so flimsy that your fire should be laid out in such a was as to survive a dump. And it can be formed around other things so takes virtually no extra space. Finally, I hope that people will try their kits out in controlled circumstances rather than assuming that they will work as imagined. I like the candy suggestion, too.

Depending upon where you are hiking, you can also take along a lightweight container (an empty metal can or an aluminum mug) so you can heat water to warm up. Candy is good as you mentioned. Drinking hot water will warm someone up faster than a space blanket or candy. Of course it adds a bit to the weight but for people hiking in cold and wet conditions, it could be a life saver. We used an empty beer can and put all the survival gear inside the can.. It made a nice small kit to carry with you. Good video with great tips for people. Seeing Luna there was awesome!!

Great collection. Most of it do i carry with me, if i go out in the "wilderness". What a have in addition, is a small plastic bottle (ex liquor shot) with alcohol. So i can desinfect some wounds and scratches an also to Start a fire. Keep hiking!

Hi Maiu, that's a great list. It shows that many, many items in the pre-packed emergency kits are not really useful. Though I would disagree with one item and actually add four others. Instead of an emergency blanket, use an emergency bivvy. It's made from the same material and works by the same principle. The blanket will not cover your full body and will not shield you from rain/snow and, most importantly, wind. The bivvy weighs just a tiny bit more and costs pennies. - - - I would add four items that maybe you would pack anyway and you don't count as "emergency" items, though they really are! Firstly, an oversized packaway rain coat you can wear over your coat. Not only protects it against rain and thus getting cold and wet, but you can also use it in case of sudden weather changes to combat the wind chill factor. It basically works like a mobile bivvy bag. Secondly, thinsulates (cap & gloves), as most heat is lost over head and unprotected extremities. Thirdly, a foldable thermal seat pad as sitting on the ground will suck the warmth out of your body, particularly if waiting for hours for help to arrive. Lastly, a tiny LED flashlight. If being searched in the dark from ground or air, a flashlight is essential. Oh and take the dog with you! It can keep you warm or run for help. :-)

I've tried the bivvy at 0.5C, with several layers of clothing. Even though I was cold, the interior was wet with condensation within half an hour. My head outside of course. I would have been soaking wet by morning. I cut it into a single sheet and it worked much better for me as a mini-tarp, tucked in against the drafts. Maybe you've tried all these things and found what works best for you; maybe your conditions are different from mine.

Great video Maiu, another use for a mirror in your kit (expecially for a husky person) they are good for checking your nose for frost nip. Greetings from Lapland

Try dried dates instead of hard candy. They don't go bad (although you should change them for fresh ones every couple of weeks-month), they are so nutritious that you can eat nothing but dates for a few days (maybe around 4?) without feeling fatigue as if you're eating actual food.

Dates ARE real food. I have made energy bars using dates and pecans...very good food.

I like candy so I am totally onboard with any video that says that I need it to think better. Also, nice video, I liked the larger knife with the little saw included. Estonia is a neat country.

Hard candys are like cocaine when you are exhausted or on the verge of exposure after all sugar is addictive . What I have found recently is they also help you deal with pain a bit although I get sugar headaches if I eat too many. Tampons have medical applications as well . I carry a small bottle of alcohol based hand sanitizer, great for first aid and a really good fire starter especially if you use it with tampons. Multi-purpose stuff is good.

@11:15 Vitamin C will neutralize chlorine and get rid of, or reduce, the chlorine taste. Note you would add the mix after the waiting time for tablets otherwise you cancel out the disinfectant ability of the chlorine. I carry water treatment tablets and powdered drink mixes with Vitamin C or ascorbic acid (not citric acid). Sometimes filtered water can still have an off taste which the drink mix helps cover up plus it's just fun to have flavored water instead of plain! If I need to use the tablets then the mix will get rid of the chlorine taste.

I have a system of boots actually, Neo overshoes with felted lobben boots! It's a bulky system but that's what many mushers use and it keeps you warm the entire day!

I always take anti-inflammatory tablets, salt tablets, a small red flashing light and spectacle lens wipes. After watching your video I’m going to swap my spare energy gels for boiled sweets to save space. Like you I always take a ziplock bag, . My Wife will question me if I take condoms!!! 👍

5:22 I took that little whistle off from my backpack and attached it to my headlamp belt. Now I have a whistle with me at any moment, because I have a rule to always carry a headlamp whenever I leave the campsite (even if its the middle of day and I'm only going somewhere for a few minutes). You may ask, why carrying a headlamp in the middle of day. Well, I'm hiking in the mountains so there may be a situation when, for example, I will fall off the slope of the mountain and I will lie down unconscious and wake up at night. Therefore, I never break this rule and always have a headlamp with me.
