I want to thank you for everything you've been able to provide to us, the content and the amazing yet difficult journey that is medical school. You are extremely brave and humble for sharing this video, as there are so many of us that have concerns of not matching on match day. you will probably work 30 plus years in one field..... being able to make an informed decision is not bad, it is actually vital. i have been an ER doc for 20 years. enjoy this year and give everything a chance.

A lot of my professors and deans of my school called to talk to me and nobody understood why I truly fell through the cracks but of course my board scores could always be higher but I met minimums. The process is so confusing and nobody truly knows which makes it more frustrating

Congratulations on matching! My son just went through this year's match and SOAP, matching also into a transitional year in FL (just north of Tampa). Watching your video was a vivid replay of the entire emotional week. He's thrilled for having matched and like you will embrace it for all it is worth and try for his specialty in next year's match. It's a brutal process. What I found startling was to appreciate that without matching into a residency program, one cannot do ANYTHING medical, not temporarily, not anything at all! And, there are thousands more applying for the match each year than residency positions - that math is particularly brutal. Most who don't match seem to do a research year and try again. But, it is one bite of the apple a year with no way to practice any kind of medicine, at any level, while the process works out. Because the number of residencies are limited in many specialties, there can be quite a number of very good students who have to site idle (or do a research year) for a full-year at a time, possibly more than once. Compare that to how nursing is handled. One can start with as little as 12 weeks of training as a Nurse Assistant (often on the job training). LNP nurse, 1 year of education. RN, 2 year degree. RN/BSN is a 4 year college degree, but if you already have a 2-year RN, there are 2 year RN-to-BSN programs available. Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Nurse Anesthetist (NA) is a master's college degree, a 2 year program. A NP in most states can see patients independently and write prescriptions. A Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a 4 year doctorate, or in some programs, a NP can do it in just 2 more years. All along the way in nursing there are 1 year or 2 year programs that can take one to the next level - most while working in the field - and nurses at all levels are always in demand. But on the MD/DO side, it is all or nothing, do or die, and only one match process per year! Best of luck on your residency. The good news is that with your 1-year program, and after passing Step 3, you are qualified to become a licensed physician and to be able to practice medicine in most states. Though it is still beneficial to get a full residency and board certification, but after 1 year one is no longer in the dead zone. BTW, where in FL are you going? My son is going to USF Morsani-Bayonet Pt in FL.

At first, I was in tears but my husband matched in the SOAP so I knew all was not lost. A transitional year is a great opportunity to learn information and have experiences you would otherwise not have. I remember feeling so down too when I went through the match the first time in 2019. Thought I was going to be an OBGYN since I was 10 and then matched into IM. At first I was devastated but I knew I was in a better position than most how didn’t match. My best advice is to keep an open mind in this upcoming year. Because now three years later I matched into anesthesia and have never been happier!

My fiancee did not have to soap but she feared the possibility of it. getting the news and looking into that email for match is one of the most dreadful moments in a person's life. Im sorry you had to experience this and i am extremely happy for you that managed to match after this scary experience. I've always thought it was unfair for med students to have to deal with this... 4 years of grueling and expensive education for a chance to not match because there aren't enough residency programs for everyone.

yes! I am sure you already figured this out by the time i am just now seeing this comment but so preliminary year is basically a year in the specialty you are trying to do and not all specialties offer this so for example i applied to some ob gyn pre lim years where i am basically an OB resident but you have to re apply still the next year, and a transitional year can be a year of whatever that program makes it but mostly its like internal medicine year with a bunch of electives so you can do the specialty you are trying to re apply for ... so both the pre lim and transitional year programs are just one year and you still have to go back into the match

hi! yes i think its an uphill battle always when coming from any DO school and trying to apply to competitive specialties so i think that was hard (but i do not regret choosing lecom) and then i also wasnt the most competitive applicant when it came to my step one score, i think it needed to be much higher than it was and now of course they do not even have a score for USMLE step one... but things happen for a reason i guess

Although it had been tough for you to go through this experience but your experience told us that we are not alone in this and therefore, a big thank you for sharing this. I just matched into transition year residency but without getting into radiation oncology or Internal medicine ( both pathways lead to treating cancer through heme onc fellowship). I have a dumb question, being a Transition year resident, do you think if it’s possible to match into a PGY1 Internal Medicine spot? Thank you

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!! yes yes yes absolutely possible! i have many friends from my TY year that matched into their number 1 IM programs after not initially wanting IM. you can do this and I am praying for you this year in march!

I'm sorry you didn't match and had to SOAP. Just out of curiosity, were you at USF? If so, this seems to be a pretty consistent trend and problem with USF for the past several years since we're seeing tons of people having to SOAP each year. I just watched the match ceremony and it seems like about 10-15% of the class is SOAPing, which is ridiculous considering that the national average is 6% not matching.
