My manager crashed the trade during a car deal

While Ed Bolian was selling cars at Motorcars of Georgia/Lamborghini Atlanta he had a lot of crazy things happen. During this car deal, as Ed was selling a Nissan GT-R, the customer wanted to trade a Mercedes C63 AMG. His manager took it for a test drive and disaster struck.

Having sold cars for a few years, one of the things I tell my friends and family is: When you go to a dealer to buy a car with a trade, give the salesman your EXTRA KEY. That way if you want to leave before you buy, you aren't stuck without your car or house keys. Dealers will "lose" your keys and keep you hostage until you buy. This happened to my sister, and she told the salesman, "That's fine, you have my address. Mail them to my house. Goodbye!" First time I ever saw a sales manager SPRINT after a customer.

When you buy a NEW GT-R, it spells out specifically in the sales contract that ONLY Nissan GT-R certified techs are allowed to work on the car, and not every dealershit has one on staff. So for that reason alone, among many others, I would never buy a GT-R. If I have an issue with a shady/douchey tech, I'm not driving 500 miles to the next closest dealershit with a GT-R certified tech. For that same reason, I will never buy an exotic. Don't need the massive headache of having to placate/pacify the one dealershit near my city in order to get the privilege of being screwed by the service dept. There are far easier ways to get a performance fix. The shitvette lays waste to GT-R's on a track Car & Driver 2017 Lightning Lap Historical Results

Too bad he couldn't have seen it. Don't care how you spin it, the idiot sales manager didn't want to have to take a hit for his carelessness. If I found out about someone trying to be that sneaky even after the fact, they'd never get my business again and I'd make sure as many people as possible knew about it. That's about as bad as the finance manager trying to tack on a $3,000 extended warranty to the last car I was buying without even asking me if I wanted it, essentially bumping my payments up another $30 or so a month. I may not have been buying a supercar, but that little move cost that dealership that I had previously purchased 5 other cars from my business, and the salesman who I had bought 3 of those 5 cars from a $42,000 sale

I was thinking the same thing. He pressured the customer into the sale, rather than admitting to a mistake. It would have been better to say "There was an accident. Here's what we can do to make it right." Even just admitting it, and offering the full trade-in based on no damage, or offering the repairs is honest. He would have likely accepted the trade-in, without being shady about it.

I chose a pair even thought they didn't fit perfect but still good enough but the saleswomen do not wanted to sell me the sneakers even after I said I might never come back. i had this happen to me on a smaller scale. i was looking to trade in for a new ride at a major new car dealership. i came ready to buy, so a sales manager took my car out for a test drive to determine the trade in value, while the salesperson who i was dealing with was sales pitching me hard as i waited for my car to come back. finally the manager did come back... and promptly crashed it into the parking curb right in front of the showroom, wrecking my car. this drew a large crowd from both staff and customers alike, except for the salesperson, who literally vanished into thin air. there was no hiding the damage because it happened right in front of me. i got an apology from the manager, who then promptly gave me a poorer trade in offer than another dealership had given me earlier. this manager wouldn't deal, so i ended up taking them up on their offer to fix my car on their own dime. it took them two tries over a span of one month to fix it, and by then the other dealership had sold the car i wanted... I have a similar story. I took my car in for service about 20 years ago. Long story short, they took it out to test the repair and never came back. They had to use the jaws of life to get the driver out. I saw the ambulance go down the street just like Ed mentioned and wondered where my car was. My car was totaled. Interesting talking to the insurance company. They wanted me to describe the accident - I told them I had no idea, I wasn’t there. The dealer loaned me a car to get home. I talked with them about buying a new car of course, but they knew I had to buy a car. I ended up going to a different dealer.

Until it all goes wrong. I’ve heard stories of people being “streeted,” only to have the deal later shot down by all of whichever bank(s) a dealer works with. It happens. Unscrupulously, it’s sometimes done intentionally! ‘Johnny Salesman’ then has to get the customer back in, and persuade them into new terms. Usually in the form of a *MUCH* bigger down payment, higher interest rate, monthly payment (and possibly even slip a few extra $$$ onto the sale price to boot). As I understand it - laws on this *DO* vary across US jurisdictions.... Though in many instances, should this happen, ‘Joe Customer’ can decline the new deal’s, less favorable terms - return the car and walk away. “Walking away” may not be so simple for single-car, and perhaps lower-income family customers though.... 1) They won’t be told this is an option, and maybe even lied to, if so inquiring. 2) They certainly *WON’T* be getting their trade car back - although they may be offered a buyback, for a tidy profit. Yeah.... 3) Any negative trade equity delta will need be satisfied, in cash. 4) Down payment might be held hostage, as additional financial leverage. Etcetera, etcetera; on-and-on.... Not to mention, walking off leaves a single-car customer in the position of summoning a ride home - and shopping for their next car, in a rental. Granted, I imagine a lot of the above tends not to happen with exotic car sales, and said customers. But the mechanics of car sales, regardless of make, is mostly the same in any given market. A VIN tagged and titled vehicle(s), exchanged for money.

I did say "experienced" finance guys. Not joe blow down the lot on the corner. Fly-by-night guys often pull what you stated above. They do it for various reasons, partly to get someone into a deal they know the person would not have agreed to up front (21% apr, etc). Those "very odd" situations apply as well, and more so when dealing with shady buyers or those with questionable backgrounds and credit risks. I was streeted before, based on a preliminary approval when I bought my first new car, because the bank had closed by the time we did the deal. I was making a $5000 down payment, but my daily credit limit on my bank account was $3000. So we had to wait until morning so I could get a cashier's check from the bank. They handed me the keys with instructions to come back the next day. I did, with check in hand, and there were zero problems.

I get a call Monday to come in and sign papers I "forgot" turna out no bank wanted to Finance me at the rate they quoted me. They felt it was too high, too much of a. Risk. So they had to find a bank that would lower their interest rate.

Interesting video. My issue is overall the absolute lack of Integrity of you hiding the fact that his car was damaged. I was wondering, does that dealership allow customers to test drive their cars alone? Of course not. I have purchased a number of new cars in the last few decades including a few higher end Accura's and Infinities and I have always been invited by the dealers to join them on their test drives of my trade in vehicles. I know, I know not a Mercedes or a Porsche. The bottom line is that you did a great job of closing the deal on that customer BUT, there was a lot of Deceiving him on this transaction.

Well, I'd say the caveat is that the customer doesn't have to deal with a totaled, nearly-out-of-warranty AMG, and instead has a shiny new GTR. Ed may have gotten a little more money out of the guy, and been a little shady in doing so, but that little bit of money doesn't cover the absolute loss of that AMG. So, even though he was lied to, the customer came out a bit ahead in this deal.
