I tried to join the "scene kid" community and I was criticised for not looking "scene" when I joined a social network for scene kids. At the time my hair wasn't long enough to cut it into the scene hairstyle, i had no money to buy wigs and no money to buy the clothes and now I find myself in the same situation with lolita and even furry

@@magicmoonart That sucks. How people react to newbies I mean. I personally am really interested in many things at once(that's just so me thing) and all of the things are very demanding time-wise and money-wise. And I'm broke. Like high schooler without a part time job kinda broke. So I totally get where you're coming from. Honestly crafting something myself isn't that much of a problem to me... as long as I have the materials. Which I don't. (just to give an idea I'm interested in: lolita, cosplay, furry, "regular" goth, punk/steam punk, and any artistic hobby... and I like wasting my nonexistent time playing games.)

YYeeesssssss! Especially for "niche" subcultures! There can be some really mean people in those kinds of groups that want to be picky and mean to people who don't "do it the right way", but we should encourage people to do better rather than hound their every mistake! It's so sad when I see people turn away from something they thought was cute/fun/interesting, just because an "established member" of that group told them they suck at it! :(

Exactly, it's so much better to put that energy into mentoring the new folk and passing on the pieces we don't use anymore to help them grow, or letting them ask all the questions they want. That way they won't feel the pressure and will just get to enjoy the growth and each step along the way :)

I can confirm the "lolita scam booth" theory in northern California. There was a booth at Sac Anime selling a kiss me cat replica for over $100 and they had ripped the tags off of a bunch of bodyline pieces (and cut the tags out of the actual garments) and were trying to sell them for $80.

oh yeah, those scam booths exist elsewhere. a few years ago i went to a convention in lolita for the first time instead of a cosplay, and i was wearing a dress from bodyline, which i bought directly from bodyline for $40. i stopped to look in the booth because i had a few hundred dollars burning a hole in my pocket and thought maybe id find something. i found the same exact bodyline dress that i was wearing with a price tag of $150. i tried to ask one of the girls working the booth why they wanted so much for the dress and she just scoffed at me and told me that “nobody was forcing me to buy it” and “why do i care if i already have it”. i ended up walking away without a real answer. i get that everyone is entitled to charge whatever they want for their product, but still... and it wasn’t like i was going over to the other people browsing and telling them that whatever they were looking at was cheaper online. i’ve come to learn over the years of convention-going that everything in the dealers rooms is overpriced. i understand that handmade items and artwork can be expensive because of the time it took to make it and such, but i cant justify paying $30 for a pop figure that retails for $10, just like i cant justify paying $150 for a dress that retails for $40.

  • @SeqZZ

SeqZZ i just try not to overstep my boundaries. if that were me in the booth i would be upset if somebody was telling my potential customers to just buy the thing online. then again, if i were the customer buying a $40 dress for $150 i would be upset if i didn’t find out until it was too late that i was ripped off. it’s kind of a no-win situation, so i always think it’s best to charge a fair price. i also remember reading or hearing somewhere that some people were kicked out of the angelic pretty store for telling customers that they could just buy replicas of what they were looking at online for a fraction of the price. i know that’s not the exact same thing, but again, i’d probably ask somebody encouraging my customers to buy cheap replicas instead of my product to leave the store as well.

Can confirm that very same booth up north in Washington, circa Sakuracon 2018. >8T There's two that I know of, but one tends to over-sell taobao with a smaller markup, and the other just flat out sells milanoo crap and bodyline for 120% markup.

I loved watching this! Also I really appreciated you showing your older “ita phase” photos, not a ton of people are willing to share and talk about their first coords! My first coordinate was a maid looking dress from a site at the time called “cosmates” which was essentially a bodyline reseller at the time but was in English...I begged my parents to gift it for me on Christmas when I was 13. The dress was $110 It was so not worth $110 lol. You’ve really evolved in your style and it’s so amazing to see you be happy and feel confident, that’s what Lolita is about at the end of the day. Thank you for this video, maybe one day I will make my own Lolita evolution video too! 💕

I had my lita phase junior year and because everything is so expensive and hard to get where I’m at I made my own dresses and petticoats. The first time I wore it out of the house was to a school field trip to a series of museums in DC. I thought it was best to take that risk since no one would really see me from school that day except my class on the trip. The only thing I forgot about was that we had to actually go to period one and two, so I was pretty embarrassed when everyone I walked by gave me these strange looks and in class I kept getting questioned about my clothing. That was the first and last day I wore any lita out of the house but I still have kept a bit a of sweet Lolita in parts of my everyday style, because it brings joy to my day.

This was so fun and interesting to watch! When i started out with lolita, I cheap wore halloween wigs and j-fashion dresses that weren't lolita, I did my makeup with an eyeliner pencil all around my eyes and I didn't wear a blouse, it looked horrible haha. I then started buying from Bodyline and currently I mostly buy brand clothes, so my style has definitely evolved. At first I was really into OTT sweet, now I like old school, sweet, and gothic the most. It's funny to look back at those photos but it really makes me cringe 😅 I think most of your coors were very cute even tho you were just a beginner. It's nice to see someone that has been wearing it for so long, a lot of people in my community/in my country stopped wearing lolita. Anyways I love your videos so much, you were one of the first lolitas I followed 💕

So to all those people out there who go to anime conventions, there are people who mark up prices for Bodyline/Taobao dresses like some of the others warned. So yeah those scam Lolita booths are a thing.

Gahhh that mermaid/aqua princess thing makes me so upset DX I saw a listing on LM for a Magic Tea Party JSK I've been wanting but they wouldn't show any proof photos, had to walk away :( It was such a good deal too :( But I don't trust anybody who doesn't give a proof pic plus close ups of damages. *sigh*

I LOVED this video, thank you so much for it! Lolita is so interesting and cute, and every time I see someone in lolita I just want to look like them and try it myself but it's so intimidating! Brands? Coordinating? And those price tags?? 😂 Makes me wanna cry sometimes Seeing somebody's "beginner stage" is really inspiring

Oh my god the photo with the brown dress I have seen on some random site with no context. So it was you!! It might have been like "what to not do ita" blah blah thing, but I genuinely thought it was kind of nice dress. (of course just not maybe the best way to present it lol) It also brought to my mind something like Acerola from pokemon even though she's all purple. It really sticked to my mind when I saw that photo because despite the random comments of how "wrong" it was, I just thought that the dress has some elements that could be turned into an actual lolita design, if it was made actually well and precisely lolita design in mind. I had like a discussion about this with someone.

I love the wig you're wearing in this video! I haven't been up to date with your content and don't know if you've talked about it before, but what wig is it? If you know, that is. I know sometimes people can just collect so many wigs that some fade into the deep recesses of inaccessible memory.

I researched the hell out of lolita before I bought anything. I only have 2 dresses and a hoop-petti (like Tyler). I really want to get an actually fluffy petticoat because I want to feel the floof floof cloud-like fluffy feeling, but I gotta wait until the COVID19 thing calms down cus places with actual decent petticoats aren't shipping. I got 2 dresses, both off-brand right now (The Holy Cross by CEL in white [tho it was only so my bible thumper mother wouldn't peg lolita as a fetish fashion I cry a thousand tears. look mom they got Jesus prints see!?] and Thousands of Birds by Witch of the Heisei [TAOBAO brand] in yelllow/orange). I did buy my first BRAND dress! It's a Metamorphose dress called Twinkle Journey. Was browsing through Wunderwelt and instantly fell in love. It was the dark pink colorway and the little pegasi on it remind me of the Pegasus song (Beetoven's Symphony 6 aka Pastoral) from the Fantasia 2000 Disney movie. It was my favorite song other than the flamingo one... and the whales... but Wunderwelt wont ship anywhere until the pandemic has calmed down. I am trying SO HARD not to have a Ita-Phase. Me creating an ita coord is bound to happen sooner or later but you can't say I didn't try to resist it.
