My Life is None of Your Business! Leave Me Alone!

Ғылым және технология

A rant. The most irritating thing for those of us who are privacy conscious are comments like "what are you hiding?" or "as long as you follow the law who cares?" or "you're paranoid".
I'm sure I'm not alone on this. Well, if you get irritated by this, then there is nothing wrong with you. Ignore these NPCs but you also need a smart understanding of why you do need to care and why these NPCs are the ones who are wrong.

It's also about secrets: My passwords are a secret. My daily routine is a secret. My home address, phone number, medical history, social security number, voter ID... Are all secrets I don't want to share with anybody. Why? Because I fear what malicious people do with them! I haven't done anything wrong, and that's _precisely_ why I want my secrets well protected.

So why do you need to hide? I know any who don’t care if you can see their bank accounts, or medical records. What’s the big deal? Everyone isn’t perfect. Plus it would stop the majority of crime. “A good person has nothing to hide” they say.

@@kylethedalek "So why do you need to hide?" I'd like you to reply to this email with your real full name, your home address, your telephone number, the numbers of any credit cards you own, your bank card numbers and pin numbers, and your Google account login and password, please. If you don't reply with that information then I know that you have something to hide. "I know any who don’t care if you can see their bank accounts, or medical records." And what about if your health insurer sees your medical records and doubles the cost of your premiums because of the information on there? Or Google tracking provides data that demonstrates you were travelling in your car at 60 mph in a 40 mph zone to your car insurance company who then also increase your car insurance premiums because you're a careless driver? There are many other examples where knowing more about you can make your life more difficult, more susceptible to crime or just more expensive. "What’s the big deal?" Now you see "the big deal". I've explained it to you. You're welcome. You can thank me later. "Everyone isn’t perfect." It's normally said as "nobody's perfect" but it's a meaningless statement here anyway. "Plus it would stop the majority of crime." Why? Someone committing a crime generally does so as anonymously as possible. Knowing everyone's personal data won't stop criminals creating false identities. And they knowing your data gives them the best targets for robbery or fraud. "“A good person has nothing to hide” they say." "And a person lacking knowledge frequently hasn't got a clue about what they are talking about", I say. If you're too lazy to care about your privacy then, that's fine, that's your choice. But be honest about it rather than trying to hide your laziness behind some "backwards engineered" rationale that can be torn apart in seconds.

At the same time that slave attacks anyone who is actually engaged in freedom bc freedom is scary to a slave. A slave without a master cannot function bc they cannot control themselves due to the amount of fear within them. They cannot conceive freedom bc they have been abused their whole life. It's about trauma based mind control and it's foisted down our throats from day one. They inject us destroying our genes, retarding our capabilities then dogma rush us into a life of lies and complete dependency upon them. How is this is even right? Rights are like a muscle, they atrophy if you don't make use of them. There is only one simple justification you need for wanting your privacy and that is: "It's my right." Human rights do not need a justification to exercise, they are a given that anybody can feel free to make use of. If you want to speak your opinion no one asks you why you feel the need to do that, if you want to live unharmed physically and psychologically nobody bothers to ask what you are afraid of. But with privacy, everybody keeps pestering you about it.

@@linsqopiring6816 "I keep seeing you asking people in the comments the particulars of what pro privacy measures they have taken." Yes, well done, you're clearly paying attention, Mr. Obvious. "This is a bad idea because it would make it easier for an adversary to defeat those measures." You clearly do not understand the differences between "security" and "privacy". This is the first issue you need to resolve and this is why I ask people about privacy, in order to determine what they understand - which appears to be very little in your case. An adversary is someone who might potentially attack your systems in order to steal data or cause damage - the adversary will use attack vectors that you identity as part of risk analysis, and you put protections in place that best defend your systems against such attacks. Yes, you probably would not reveal the protections that you use as "security" defences. However, "privacy" is about restricting the passive leakage of your data & obfuscating the data so it becomes useless. This is not an "adversarial" attack but "opportunism" where an evil corporation will take that data to resell it or use it for profit. The evil corporation cannot stop you deploying the mechanisms to not leak data, it is therefore irrelevant that they know what those are. There, I feel you've learned something new today. You're welcome, you can thank me later. "That's why some of my best techniques you'll never see me disclose on a non anonymous form such as google comments." Actually they are KZread comments and it's written as "Google" given it's a proper noun. Like I said, there's no reason you can't explain them to others, that is what Rob (and others) have been doing here for years anyway - which you clearly have "glossed over" as a core point anyway. Plus I can assure you that "Terry Daktyllus" is anonymous enough on here for Google not to be able to link that identity to a real individual anyway. " Much as I'd like to tell everyone." I call "bullsh1t" on you. I don't believe you know very much at all, to be honest. It sounds like a playground "I know the answer but I'm not telling you" argument between kids.

If that's the conclusion that you have come to then so be it - though I don't fully understand what you're saying here, unless it's a diversionary tactic on your part. "Of course, governments in both the EU and US are already on top of the issue, and are most definitely handling it well." That statement means nothing - it's just "fluff". A right to privacy is a right to be left alone. This is common law. Suggesting that I (as a law-abiding citizen, for instance) should have nothing to hide is equivalent to suggesting that others have a right to inject themselves into my life. That means I'm a slave, or ironically, imprisoned by someone, even though I'm a law abiding citizen. :)

Unfortunately, any sign up on a website or social media requires your number and it actually verifies it by sending a sms (for example Gmail, Twitter, FB), so you need to have a burner phone. Also some couriers ask you to send your location in whatsapp. So invasive, but that's how it is now.

On the other hand sometimes when a platform gets more strict they will retroactively force 2fa on existing users but that hasn't happened so it seems you might still be able to sign up on some websites without any 2fa. I'm even using a VPN. But burner phones don't help, their numbers aren't usable for 2fa.

About 20 years ago I was watching a TV show where some US based news reporters were in China for some convention and being interviewed by the Chinese state sponsored media. They said some things that the Chinese government didn't like during this interview, so that part of the interview was scrambled during transmission, looking like "technical difficulties". It was only about 20 seconds of a 10 minute interview. No other "technical difficulties" happened during, before or after that interview. The US reporters then went around and interviewed Chinese citizens about these "technical difficulties" and the Chinese citizens 100% of the time said "We believe the state.. the technical difficulties were just a coincidence". Keep in mind.. this was 20 years ago! The amount of control that the Chinese government has over its citizens has been total and complete for at least 2 decades. Everything they think, say, feel, and even dream about is 100% controller by their government. This is where the US is going. Our government looks at China as a road map... under their complete, authoritarian control. "You will own nothing and be happy" - World Economic Forum, 2016

I completely understand, I miss the days where you can disappear for days if you wanted to. Yeah there are rare edge case benefits, like if you call 911 from your cell and pass out from an injury, you can be found. I miss being able to go about my own business and NOT be recorded everywhere you go. Look at whatever interests me on the internet while not being surveilled. There doesn't need to be a database where the things that make me, "me", are collected and analyzed. We aren't far off from a "Minority Report" scenario, computer models are already being used to predict our behavior. Anonymity, has disappeared. Is computing ethics even taught anymore, in the Computer science curriculum? It's all going to hell, we're like the Senate in the Star Wars movies when they handed over power to Sidious. Applauding and cheering while our freedoms and autonomy are stripped away.

Great points. The emergency call where you can't tell them where you are is so over blown. How did people survive for decades without cellphones at all? Anyway it should be MY choice if I'm so worried about that I'm willing to handover all my privacy just in case of that rare scenario. And I really think that AI being tracked with behavior prediction is going to become a HUGE thing in the future. You walk into the store one day and you're not smiling enough and AI will dispatch a security guard to follow you because you might be a shoplifter. The focus of our lives is going to be more and more what our "profile" is. Instead of our life itself. Sickening.

@@linsqopiring6816 That data could then be used for employment purposes, as well. There would be thoughts, emotions, views, etc that would effectively be prohibited from society. The impact on individuality, reasoning, art, culture, philosophy, relationships, and basically all of human endeavour would be absolutely devastating: human nature would effectively be crushed-or, rather, simply washed away by ideology, politics, and propriety. Those things are by far not guaranteed to be right, contrary to popular belief, and have often been mistaken in what they seek to modify or suppress in individuals. Fortunately, human nature has been able to prevail thus far: the ability to develop one's views in private, convey them to others, and argue for them without excessive concern for reprisal at any given step along the way has allowed outlying individuals to at least be able to find society's flaws, even if only ever to point them out in private. Without privacy and individual liberty, however, this process effectively cannot take place: the psychological levers of surveillance, social consequence-exacerbated by surveillance-and social acceptance-exacerbated by social consequence-will act in such a way that those prone to individual thinking will more likely be suppressed in that process at some step along the way, and those who may otherwise have listened to them will increasingly be precluded from doing so. This will, again, ultimately occur at the expense of individuals themselves-at the expense of their genuine, real, and true thoughts, emotions, and perceptions. A consequence that is likewise worth remembering in the fact of any justification for social engineering. The scumbags who implement all of this-as well as the idiots who support it-seem shockingly unaware of, or perhaps indifferent to, this fact.

Wouldn't be interesting to create an internet protocol that is more privacy minded that can do things like serve websites, webapps, web3 capable, and uses strong robust cryptographic keys. This client can browse these sites but has an entirely different protocol that does not have the same hang ups modern web browser do. Perhaps segregated internet zones that use different cryptographical keys. The big problem it always seems with privacy is that regular uses don't want to do this. Also, is there a way to tie in amateur radio like Meshtastic radio technology that can be improved upon to host this said technology?
