    Iv kept fish for nearly 50 years i currently have 5 aquariums and a pond and iv come to the conclusion the only time fishkeeping is relaxing is when you are looking at other people's fish

    Hi Carl. I think the problem with your fish was that when the filter stopped, the bacteria died and that stopped the nitrogen cycle. Instead of relatively harmless nitrate you end up with much more toxic nitrite and even ammonia in the water. This stresses the fish badly and you can get all sorts of secondary infections. The best thing is to immediately get the filter and bacteria back online and replace 80% of the water with fresh water (you may have to do this a couple of times). I am really enjoying watching your fishing vids! Dr. Paul Rushton

    Thankfully no bacterial issues the vet said :) - just a superficial inflammation response from poor water quality. She gave them a vitamin injection to boost their immune system and checked for parasites too. which was negative, grateful there was nothing else wrong. They've recovering well after salt doses, lots of water changing and adding bi carb whenever is needed to keep the KH high enough, especially after the heavy rains we had. Very relieved that the water quality has bounced back nicely :)

    So glad to hear your fish are on the mend, i have been keeping koi for over 40 years, i know the feeling when you think they are not well, one thing i have learnt is that the more complicated the filter system , the more to go wrong, modern day filters are very effective, but they have way more chance of going down when you least expect them....

    Glad to hear the fish are recovering can only imagine the stress you were under. Health wise yes mate get cracking on it cause it will slow you down in long run. I used to be horrible with drinking water. I find now I always carry a bottle with me like used to with a coke and it helps me drink more. Meal planning helps loads cause it is already made food. I cook in batches and freeze them if I make too much and portion it out in food tubs. Microwave and eat. You can find meals that don't need cooking but start prepping meals it helped me loads. I got to a point to try to have something every 2 hours. I lost 30lbs fairly quick 3 to 4 meals and healthy snack inbetween. I don't exercise as much as I should yet but plan to increase now that I have my water intake and food fixed. Hope you get to where you want with your health need a teammate or support let me know

    Really happy your fish are getting back to normal! Maybe consider stocking a couple of large green/golden Tench in with your koi? Just in case you get similar issues in the future? There's a reason why they're so slimy and are called Doctor Fish. They'll help with any skin/scale issues. I know they're not koi but they ARE beneficial (and beautiful also).

    I love that your using a carp unhooking mat for your koi. 🙂You should look into getting some "patted marginal plants" for your koi pond in case your filter messes up again so there's still something removing nitrates.

    Great watch. If I may suggest in regards to the log book: consider using "waterproof paper" as it would make it (for me at least) a big selling point knowing that I can use it and write on it in the rainy/wet conditions without having it get wet/damaged. It is more pricy, but might be worth it, as a premium version perhaps? Good stuff though.

  • @more_fishwithcarl

    That would be great and I think it is available as an option, just means it's harder to write on! But I see what you mean, I'll look into it and see whether it's possible from our printer. I suppose it would need a fine tip waterproof pen too that won't smudge. I wonder if one those protector booklets/outer sleeve thing would help a little for the regular ones?

    After keeping koi myself, I've realised just how easily they can get I'll. I think it's got to the point that to much breeding has given them very weak immune systems

    Thankfully their immune systems are still pretty good even though they've been bred compared to most fish! Most other species would've died but carp are just super resilient!

    I think this speaks to our reliance on tech. I've seen your filter and it is perfect but the strange paradigm nowadays is bare empty tanks stocked with active and hungry fish. Even my uncle who should know better keeps expensive arowanas in bare sterile tanks When i was growing up, we kept koi, carp and goldfishes in ponds with plants and sand/gravel. Even if our filters failed, the plants were hungrily sucking up the free ammonia/ammonium and there are some beneficial bacteria in the substrate and plants to oxidise or breakdown the waste and excess food. Nature will take over when our tech fails. If you're worried about the fishes disturbing and uprooting the plants, just keep them in pots. Take your pick of plants and you can keep them in floating pots on the surface for the koi to play football and hide from the sun, or place them underwater where their roots are still protected by the pots.

    glad to hear that there on the mend. Lots of people have suffered with bacterial problems with koi this year, so you’re not alone! but I would say for the size and quality of your fish, I would invest in better food than the food you were using in the video like some like saki hikari

    I had exactly the same thing happen on my pond in winter with the drum clogging. Luckily being in Scotland all i done was turn the heater off and let the temps plummet slowing everything down. As well as a water change and a constant flow of freshwater (no water meters in Scotland) untill i managed to re-seed the filters with the help of a mature sponge from friends system. Glad you managed to get its sorted in the end 👍 although tipping the salt straight in was hard to watch 🫢

    How good that the fish are doing better! And I can understand your worries very well. After all, it's the first time you've been in this situation and the fish have a high material value in addition to their sentimental value. What has become of the car story? Was the person investigated and did you get any money back? Keep up the good work, your videos are awesome! PS: Tell Alex that I also miss his videos haha

    Hi mate! Thanks for the comment. Yeah so the police let the guy off as apparently there wasn’t enough evidence to prove he did it on purpose, even though he admitted he did it intentionally! Weird! Anyway I had to pay the repairs / and it was over £600 :( either way, annoying!!

    Someone a couple of weeks ago suggested putting cameras on. But also you could get a relay that switches if your motor stops which would then sound a beacon. Or for a bit extra you could have a little panel in the house that brings on a light to say there is a fault. Which I’m guessing could probably be monitored by a phone somehow.

  • @more_fishwithcarl

    @more_fishwithcarl

    6 ай бұрын

    Yes I have it linked to my phone now! I have nest cameras too but this wouldn't be able to detect faults like a broken motor unfortunately.

  • @karlchuckberry

    @karlchuckberry

    6 ай бұрын

    Yes like I say you would have to get a sparky to wire in an input output device which would switch state when the motor fails and like I say either sound a little horn or sounder or a little panel which would have a fault indicator. Bit technical I know. But we have them monitoring motors on our fire suppression motors.

  • @more_fishwithcarl

    Looks like bioload in your pond/tank is substantial: you need to get a in a water quality computer going. That is about 1-2k investment at most, but you will see all the stats on your phone. Reef tanks all have these systems in order to keep alive at all times.
