My KEF Kube-2 subwoofer failed, lets see why

Ғылым және технология

This video is about my kef kube-2 repair. Note that I have already ordered a new plate amp. It's a tough call as to whether to do this repair, the plate amp is half the cost of replacement. However, while they are currently still available (not much longer no doubt) it's certainly cheaper than shelling out $1200 for a new sub when the woofer in this one at least still works perfectly. I have tested it and it is fine.
If the board was not charred this could of been repaired, and given that it's basically been left powered on non stop for the past 8 years i wanted to avoid risks of further issues by replacing the entire assembly rather than just the power board. (considerably cheaper option) The input/control board above the power board would of been subjected to considerable heat over its lifetime too and has been known to cause issues as well.
The exploded component and track is on the secondary side of the power supply and appears to be leading towards the amplifier IC. Something will be dead shorted or failed. I may check a few components before throwing it in the bin to see if i can tell, if i have time.

You had it for 8 years, meaning this isn't the latest Kube 8b, 10b and 12b range?

dead shorted smd cap on +18v amp supply - resultant pcb damage is catastrophic. Complete assembly replacement repair the only safe option.

8 years is NOTHING! My SW-160 Yamaha has just only bit the dust after 15 years of daily abuse. This is intentional, reckless, competitive, dangerous, & as per something called *Planned Obsolescence* All those materials & the energy spent amalgamating something that will just force you to keep buying crap to keep the economy going. Pathetic.

I have bought last year a rare new ! sealed in original box ADCOM GFA 555 MK2 power amplifier, it was babied for more then 20 years at the seller closet. it is an amazing sounding amp , by now I am not going to recap it as it sound fantastic, but I am sure I need to do it in the coming years.
