My interview with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails for the official Nine Inch Nails website nin.com
Музыка
This interview took place on May 6, 2009 which was two days before the start of the NIN/JA tour with Janes Addiction and Street Sweeper Social Club. This is how the interview came about.
Earlier that year Trent answered 10 questions on digg.com. You could submit a question and it would be voted on by the community there, and the top 10 most voted questions would be asked. So Trent did the interview and answered those questions. To us hardcore fans the questions were very casual and we knew the answers to them already. So naturally people complained about it on many forums, mainly Echoingthesound and the official NIN forum on nin.com. So Trent posted on his forum for us all to come up with 10 new questions, and he would then have a moderator from the forum interview him via webcam, and left it up to us mods to figure out who and how, all that fun stuff.
So a few of us mods created sample videos and we voted on who should do it. With the help of my girlfriend at the time (thanks Amber) we made a video and submitted it, and I got voted to interview Trent! 10 new questions were voted on and a few weeks later here I am, never interviewed anyone in my life before, and I'm interviewing Trent fucking Reznor from my bedroom, via webcam, not knowing if the recording/audio/etc would work or not until after the interview was over. Holy fuckballs. To say I was nervous was an understatement.
The interview has been up on KZread, but broken up in many 10 minute segments, as that was the length limit for YT videos back then. I thought I had lost the original file of this interview from a hard drive crash many Moons ago, but luckily I found it a few months ago, and uploaded the full interview which you see above. So enjoy! Here's a fun story, I met Trent backstage a few months later and when I introduced myself he said "How's your cat?" So awesome.
Guess I should post some links below that you should check out.

I seriously thought this was brand new and between the album talk and the video chat technology (audio and video quality) I slowly realized this is at least 13 years old.
16:09/ 56:22 Trent pointing that the interviewer was starting to get sad is for some reason really funny/wholesome to me
This was a great interview. The honesty and candor is part of why NiN is still relevant. Papa Golash did a great job seriously. His cat also added great atmosphere and vibe.
reznor is so based, thanks for publishing this
Such a fantastic interview! Thank you!!
I was lucky enough to afford to go to three nine inch nails shows. I have been a fan since high school when my friend got me into Year Zero. It still is one of my favorite nine inch nails albums and I really like all their stuff. Trent speaks from the heart and from his own experiences through music and I have great respect for Trent and anybody he has worked with or collaborated with. Trent wrote most of his music by himself and inspires me to learn about music production. Saw him dcu center Worcester mass back in 2008 which was the lights in the sky tour. I got to be up pretty close and it was an amazing show and so were the other times. I'll never forget the talk he gave about 'la mer' during the wave goodbye tour. I won't get into it but it was very inspiring. Glad to see Trent is doing what he wants to at this point in his life in terms of getting to kinda relax from touring and focus on projects of his own. Thanks for everything you've done over the years and I'm very happy that you are doing well.

Wow I am so glad I just discovered this. Watching it now. Thank you so much. Glad you found it; I know that feeling of losing important videos & pictures on computers & all that. This was to be-To Not Be Lost Ever. Long live Nine Inch Nails.
Dude! This chat with Trent should have WAY more views! Well fucking done! Soo stoked it popped up as a suggestion after DM dropping My Cosmos are mine. (3-34 can't come soon enough !) Now I'm going to one of these shows. NIN always deliver / destroy live!!!

Yes they do-I saw them live last September-had to take a drive 900 miles to see them & we were late but it was still worth it Now I just wish they will come closer to NY-Long Island-Tri-State area so I can see the entire show & not travel for days & have a traumatic anxiety filled trip on way there without sleep for days & then miss the first half hour of the show- They GIVE THE BEST LIVE SHOW-best show I've seen since I can remember..... Trent is so Great to his fans too Please come tour in NY-Long Island-TriState area Trent Nine Inch Nails..... I want this opportunity to see you up close & personal front of stage from beginning to end as I know seeing your live show is something that POSITIVELY changes my life in a very good way & I really need that now & I think it can really help my adult son as well & Is love to take him too..... Please give us the opportunity Still paying off the debt from last year's tickets-travel & everything to see them at Louder Than Life festival & didn't even see any other band-Only the headliner & missed the beginning of their set too-I die to the very long traumatic drive there
wow awesome thank you for the interview! listening now while at work. Was just listening to all of Ghosts. His painting behind did look like a NIN thing lol

The Collector was my favorite song too ❤ this interview was a year after I saw the lights tour twice.
Damn, this brings back so many memories. I miss ninchat. I hope you're doing well, papa!
It was 93', and my grandma bought Broken on tape, I was 12... Now I work at a industrial lable, and make industrial music you and Skinny Puppy formed me.
I was so ready for the Tapeworm questions....dang.
Part of my soul is still in Cuyahoga Falls Ohio. I had no idea that would be such an important and amazing show, for me it was simply the closest venue to Milwaukee. That kills me to hear him saying that they won't tour anymore. NIN live is really the only time that I actually feel fully alive.

that last sentence exactly. I've only been to one tour twice and I tried to last year but got sick. Now I don't know if I'll get the chance to see NIN again and it's devastating.

Trent reznors essence as a creator echoes the same of those I know in engineering. The mind reveals its patterns time and time again. I develop software and also produce music in my free time. The two activities compliment each other well. Cheers

Cool! When was this filmed? He mentions being engaged, so I assume around 2008/2009, which is when he married Mariqueen. *EDIT: Never mind. You mention 10 year anniversary of The Fragile, so that answers my question.
I remember seeing this from ets when it came out.

(Will update this when I have the time) 2:20/56:22 What made you decide not to play Lights In The Sky live and will we ever see it live? 3:35/56:22 What are the reasons for not playing certain songs and given the band members have to learn over 70 songs how do you pick the 20ish songs that play each show? 8:49/56:22 Regarding unreleased material, it should come to no surprise to assume you have mountains and mountains of unreleased work have you ever come back to release work for newer albums and would you release it to the fans to remix and what are the legal implications of that? 12:00/56:22 The recent two songs were taped during the With Teeth era but were just released now, did you ever have to do anything with interscope to release them? 12:37:56:22 What were some non music related things you haven't done in your life that you really want to do? 20:25/56:22 The Still album represented showed a softer side to NIN do you have any interest in creating another album like Still in the future

(not exact wording) 22:54 - Any Ghost songs on the next tour? 23:35 - You recently asked your followers for cover song suggestions, what were some of the more outlandish ones? 25:44 Years ago you mentioned you wanted to release The Fragile in surround sound by 2009, do you have any plans to commemorate these projects or is there too much red tape involved? What else would you include? 32:23 - There is a large demand for live recordings of Nine Inch Nails shows, have you ever considered a Nine Inch Nails focused torrent site? Are there legal issues that would hinder you from releasing live recordings? What about providing pro video or sound board recordings from the south? 39:49 - If you were to make a list of who you wanted to collaborate with who would it be on it and why? 42:25 - You posted an online survey last year regarding your touring and shows etc. Did the data from the survey help shape the Nine Inch Nails we see now? 44:09 - Does being a constant tease to the Nine Inch Nails community bring you immense amounts of joy similar to the amounts or agony you impose on us?
There is a NIN board? hee hee
47:19 'It's like making love properly..... Very well said Trent Reznor. That's exactly what it is
You can tell question 8 (the collaboration question) really perturbed Trent for some reason.

@@kaicanyonellis oh i agree and i love a lot of the symbol era dearly but purely from an 'is he being really interesting creatively' perspective, around that time it was the rave into the joy fantastic (with arista and their 'supernatural' tactic of lots of guests) and remaking 1999 with larry graham etc which is a pretty commercial enterprise for him, especially for the time, whereas lotus flower in 2009 is trippy, semi-conceptual and full of great guitar work. i'd take the weakest pricne album over most other music though and feel even trent gets into repetitive doldrums at times tbh - again one of my fave artists ever and one that inspired me to do music in the first place so being picky with stuff i love really. ;-) btw this is lee i just replied on wrong sign in. :-)

Content is king of course...and anything Trent has to say is gonna be gold...but wouldn't you think that in a situation where we have someone interviewing a certifiable music legend...that they'd at least TRY and get some decent production values going on. Sorry...but the quality of this video is absolute garbage...and that makes it very hard (for me at least) to enjoy listening to Mr. Reznor.
