What Misha says about inspiration is 100% spot on. You can listen to tech death and end up writing grunge; what matters is that the tech death got you writing.

Happy birthday Dean!
I thought Misha was gonna go the whole video without talking about cars or watches, oooh so close! But yeah, so right about strings. I've never found anything that's quite perfect. The D'addario 117 set with a 066 for low 7 is the closest, except for some custom sets, but with shipping those get too expensive. For D and drop C on 27" I'm pretty happy with the D'addario set+66.
Brandon plays in C standard, recently switched string brands but he was using a 11 - 56. Quite light on top.
@Dustinchugs
Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's a bit too light for my taste lol. I'm in the same tuning, just drop A# and that's probably an .18 on the D# I'm too heavy handed for that
I will see Archspire tomorrow. So excited!
Did appreciate the string analysis!! Honestly its a topic thats not really discussed alot but gave me insight because been trying out different sets on my 7 strings and all this really helped! Thanks guys 😊
This was great, love the topics. Misha is an awesome hardworking guy same like you, i love your personality's and that's showing in the writing and playing.
Brandon Ellis' vibrato is insane!!

Glad to see a new video! Didn't expect see an upload while you're on tour :D The part about how the strings affect your playing was really interesting.
Really enjoyable conversation!

Interesting to hear your musical taste journey from your teens and on. Mine went from The Offspring -> Limp Bizkit/Disturbed/Godsmack -> Slipknot -> Arch Enemy -> Black Dahlia Murder/As I lay Dying -> Necrophagist/Dimmu Borgir/Cradle of Filth -> Obscura -> Animals as Leaders/Chon/Casiopea/Polyphia/Archspire - its like a journey of complexity

I'm glad to hear you guys obsessing over strings because I am waaaay down the string gauge rabbit hole, playing with tension calculators and ordering another set of custom gauges because I think I could tweak the setup juuuuuuust a little more. My 24.75" scale sets are different than my 25.5" sets are different than my 26.5" sets and holy shit, the bass sets...I complain, but I actually enjoy obsessing over this stuff.

sup legends
Why it cuts off at the end??? Want to hear the whole interview!!!
Misha and Dean about to reinvent strings 😂
You two gotta listen to Quarter by Fuel its like the first Djent type lick if you will lol
Who did your right arm the art is amazing
Does Horizon offer string customization for the public? A 6 string 12 set with a low 68 would make me moist
No one likes to change strings, and that's why everybody sticks to one or two set of strings instead of exploring other gauges (and I'm also guilty of it)
It’s always a great time when you don’t know who’s interviewing who
As John Mayer wisely said: "You think you play the guitar, but actually you play the strings".
Love both these bands so much!!!! 1:20 lol archspire is it’s own genre lol. Truth lol, but also Djent is not a genre but periphery is a genre as well lmfao.
I can never bring myself to listen to periphery on purpose, something about the vocals is really not my thing but for some reason I really like Misha.

What’s funny is I used to get annoyed at people not liking Spencer’s vocals. Then I see every KZreadr saying this new invent animate album is contender for album of the year and I never heard of them. I start to listen and all I can think is the singer sounds like he’s half asleep on a lot of cleans lol. So I’m like oh now I understand what it’s like to not like the vocals even though other people seem to love it. It’s all subjective I think periphery’s new album is way better but almost everyone else and even periphery themselves would probably say the invent animate album is better lol.
@Maggai
Жыл бұрын
The annoying thing about Spencer is that he has a fantastic voice, but he chooses to sing in a specific kinda forward "boyband" tone a lot that I really don't like. But then when he's singing more soft cleans or growls and screams or high cleans he sounds great, so it's really a mixed bag for me. I listened to the instrumental version of P3 a lot.
only other band that comes close to Archspire is spawn of possession but I still like Archspire better haha sick interview
Why does it taper off at the end? I can hear you saying "1 more thing before...." What was the last thing?!!
do they have any baritone 6 strings?
@sheldonwright8770
Жыл бұрын
Who’s they? Lots of baritone 6s on the market 👌
I love your watching your guys vids. Your wife and yourself should do some kind of side project that's an extension of what you do on the channel and name it something clever like a spin on your names Dean & Claire, DeClaire, Lamb of DeClaire, Lamb of Dean, Lamb of Claire, Dean & Claire and the family Lamb, DeClaire The Family Lamb. You guys come up with some I can't do all the work. Seriously though you guys have a relationship I think all Metalheads would risk their life for. Take care of it cause what you found in each other is one of the most uniquely beautiful connections I've ever seen. You not only found each other, but you fell in love with each other, someone to love hard that can take it hold on tight never let go that goes for both of you cause you're tough your stronger than all, you always got someone to go to shows with, shares the same interests, someone you can headbang with, make love to, is beautiful, is your best friend, and your jam buddy for the rest of your life... DUDE THAT'S IS RARE! Like finding out all the original members of PANTERA were abducted by aliens after Vulgar came out then landed in your backyard yesterday kinda rare... THAT MY FRIEND IS PARADISE.🤜🤛🤘🤘👋✌
IMO, multiscale guitars will tend to make those normal, typically unbalanced, string sets feel a lot more optimized and much better. I completely switched away from regular scale guitars for 7s and 8s after discovering this like 10 years ago. I always hated how much tension the treble side strings had on a non-multiscale 27" scale guitar. That extra tension just makes legato and bending so much harder than it should be when playing lead lines. I find a lot of the people with the best vibrato are always using much thinner gauge strings and playing with a lot more finesse.
14:26
Haunted Shores is pretty cool, but it sounds just like Neuraxis to me.
I can’t tell who’s interviewing who 😂
What I wanna say (and this is no way a slap in the face to Archspire) is I feel like previous albums they always wanted to sound something like Beneath the Massacre who to me are one of the best in the business for this sound, but they surpassed them with their last album. Archspire has perfected the tech elements but still make songs have feeling, structure and emotion instead of just insane noodling and blasts. The last album gets me super hyped for their next. This band is the tits.

Shrimp Bizkit
Yup, strings and picks are what will influence your style the most IMO. Like you mentioned - Ellis has that wide, great vibrato because he's using like 10's in C standard** - same as Wes Hauch with 10's or 9s in G# on a 7 string** . After strings comes the pick, for example - you would not believe what a Jeff Loomis 1.5mm sharp can do to your playing after you get use to the bite of the pick. Great interview and segment! ** this was from memory, you can find what actual gauges they use and the point being that they are going lighter for easy bends and vibrato
Dean sounds like jerryrig everything
at the very beginning you both talk about tweaking riffs over and over and over... now that those songs are released and we've heard the "final version" I think the fans would really love to hear the early versions too! Could be an extra way to make some $$$ and let us hear "more" riffs!
Oh yeah one last thing before.................
There must be a correlation between having a sexy voice and be proficient at playing guitar, because GOD DAMN, guys. That's it. Cmere, you two. Let's make this a weekly interview, swing our guitar masts all around the place, talk about music and stuff... It's alright, Claine can watch.
1:35 'I like your band a lot, and if I want to listen to Archspire, there's no other band that I can listen to' - Misha Mansoor. He's never listened to your band.
Long hair vs bald guy
love Periphery and Archspire, but Misha is missing out on First Fragment if he thinks there's nothing else out there like Archspire granted First Fragment is very different from Archspire, but I think FF manages to be simultaneously more technical and more musical (in my opinion) and just as extreme if not more extreme (fast BPMs, gravity blasts, but FF shreds way way way more) much love to Dean and Archspire, but I absolutely need Misha to hear First Fragment (since he already knows Archspire)
First! Pin me! I loved your show at Budapest! It was awesome!
The guitarists from periphery are super talented, big problem I have with the band though is that instead of concentrating on good songwriting, they play like there trying to show off how technical they are, style over substance. Like noone cares how many time signatures you can throw into a song, make it actually sound good
