    I’m 64. I’ve only recently learned of this and similar conditions. I don’t understand why we are not taught or even made aware that people are born with an intersex condition. I’ve looked into intersex over the past few months and I am blown away that it as taken 64 years of living to learn about this. This is a natural state in human development. Shameful education system. Beautiful people. God bless all of you who have the courage to speak about your personal experiences. Thank you.

    Watching your video I had one thought going through my brain, "Oh look! Someone like me!" The big difference is that you are so young and I am so old. And I grew up in a time when these kinds of things were kept very quiet. Very hush hush especially if you were to grow up in a religious family like I was. Many years ago, I founded and ran a transgender support group for eleven years before I retired, even though I knew that doing so would cause people to improperly categorize me into that community. I never minded that because I knew who and what I am. Like you, I have no body hair, no body odor, gonads that were removed because they were supposedly "precancerous"....... Today, I identify as an Asexual, Demisexual, Androgyne. I am the "other" sex/gender. :-)

Years ago it was also suggested that I may have a mild form of AIS but that is minor compared to other Intersex issues. I had surgery as a ten year old child. Im not sure what was doe during those first surgeries. As an adult I did develop cancer that was also related to the intersex.

    Thank goodness, we can now talk about these topics. I grew up in a world where no one existed between neck and knees. Women could not tell daughters about periods. I was told I would have a visitor every month and that I would have to put on a pad. This was the day the first day of my first period. Speaking openly like this would have had my mother thinking you should be shut in an institution because you are too sex aware and being hysterically silly. There are still people around who can not come to terms with anything between neck and knees. Even the way I have put this shows how outside normal my attitude to the body has been drastically biased. Fortunately now young people are able to see normal is very different from my young days.

    I just came across your video. I am an older woman, and I am also intersex, like you, I have no body hair, but still have all my hair on my head, and I also have no body oder, my sweat does have no smell, and I never had a pimple in my face ever. But I am not AIS. I don't know exactly what I have, the closest is the De la Chapelle Syndrom with no SRY gene (which made my body develop more towards female), and I have hypogonadism, which means, my body makes no testosterone and no estrogen either, and that caused me to grow to 6' 1" (I have a girlfriend, she has CAIS, and is 6' 5" tall). And my height is my problem, De la Chapelle Persons are relatively short, and I am way to tall for this. But living in the US as an older person, nobody will pay for any more detailed testing if the condition will not cause health problems. Oh, by the way, I am also a medical person (PhD Biomedical sciences), and I am my own biggest research project, I am still discovering more genetic mutations, with my body. You are lucky to be living in a country that takes care of citizens who do not fall into a general scheme. and adoption is a wonderful thing, I adopted my daughter, who is now adult, but she is still the sunshine of my life! Good luck for your life and future!

    @@Sambivalent Take comfort in that you know who and what you are as a human being. In many ways I think I’ve been blessed having been born this way. Clearly I don’t have AIS like you yet my male body has both female and male aspects that reside within one being. I prefer the female side the older I become. Hopefully I’m done with surgeries and cancer stuff. I did marry and with great difficulty we did manage two children before my cancer and surgeries happened. I’ve never been happier after the treatments reduced my male side even more. I’ve been lucky to have a wife who accepts me as both female or male, she just likes me for who I am. I have a question that I can’t seem to find online but - even though you hadn’t started you period by age 15, did you at least have normal breast development or was that also delayed? And - were you always tall for your age or did that height only happen once puberty kicked in and breasts began developing? *Asking because I have a 14 year old daughter who also hasn’t started her period, doesn’t have body odor, has no body hair, doesn’t have any signs of breast development, and isn’t tall for her age (she’s slightly shorter than average). I’m wondering if it could be CAIS but also don’t know if she is mentally/emotionally ready to hear that from a doctor.

    I would think it is time to have her tested for XX or XY chromosomes, and then you can go on and find out if she has CAIS.

    I can’t believe by 2012 doctors were still recommending removal of the gonads. It’s so frustrating. If your gonads were intact you wouldn’t need HRT, right? Cause your gonads we’re making androgens but then your body was converting them to estrogens?

  • @Sambivalent

    I was on 1 mg of Estrogen so I would probably have needed HRT but the surgery had major affects on my mental health and energy levels and my HRT levels weren't adjusted afterwards which I'm bummed about.

  • @Sambivalent

    @Sambivalent

    Androgen insensitivity syndrome has two forms either partial (PAIS) or complete (CAIS). In partial form you are to some degree sensitive to androgens.

    @@Sambivalent Thanks for the quick reply! I should've been more clear. I meant how are women with PAIS physically different from women with CAIS? I have seen some vids by women with CAIS. Their stories are identical to yours in that they only discovered their condition when a doctor had to investigate why they had not yet had a period. Or is the distinction something that is discovered only through genetic testing with no physical differences being apparent.

    So, how does one test for AIS anyway? I had some sex hormone and neurotransmitter blood tests performed some years ago, and they showed extremely low levels. I'm supposedly male? I've had therapists tell me I am several times before. :-/ I don't identify as male. In fact, the thought is outright painful. i only began questioning my hormonal levels as I started to feel the need to transition in my early 20s. Haven't yet, but soon. I'm extremely tall too with wide hips, started puberty at 8, and got a genderless voice and barely any body hair. My questions regarding Intersex stuff tend to just bounce off the people I ask, even the supposed experts - including the private doc I went to for the hormone tests, and the MTF doctor. I'm mainly just interested about my precise diagnosis (it's pretty safe to guess it is in the IS spectrum) due to those potential health hazards. I'm being left alone with these question here in Finland. Can't blame the docs and such, AIS is a pretty rare condition. If I even have it??? I'm mainly just self-educating here, making guesses like an angry weatherman. Frustrating AF!

    Hello fellow Finn :) They test it by doing a Karyotype. If you express male characteristics (which I assume since you were assigned male at birth) you would need to have the partial form of AIS because if you had the complete form of AIS you would present externally feminine at birth.

    @@Nourr1992 Technically via chromosomes/biology, yes. He's not wrong. He is also specifically focusing on transgenders/transitioners, not born-intersex people. However, she was clearly only responding to estrogen since fetal-hood, and has distinctly female phenotypes. Perhaps a new social definition is required. Not that a-woman-is-someone-who-identifies-as-a-woman crap (which technically means "a woman is someone who identifies as [someone who identifies as [[someone who identifies as [[[someone who identifies as]]]..." ad infinitum) How about instead, "a woman/female is a human who has naturally occuring vagina and breast tissue". Accounts for lack of uterus via nature/surgery, does not restrict to XX only, allows for those with testes, and does not conflate transitioners with real intersex people. That would include our wonderful youtuber here.

    I thought androgen insensitivity syndrome meant that the Male foetus did not have the receptors to respond to Male hormone. I didn't think the foetus responded to oestrogen as the person in the video stated.. .The foetus has no female sexual characteristics so cannot develop as female but lack of response to Male hormone means their body parts look female or ambiguous.
